Chinese Shar-Pei Books

I am trying to be cute with my title. Maybe it didn't work. But what did work for me was how informative and all-around helpful this book was for me. A former Shar-pei "co-habitant" (at a home I lived at in the 90's), I had a birds-eye view of this breed, but couldn't quite remember all the details of what to expect. This cleared it all up for me. I recommend this book for people who are trying to learn about these wonderful dogs.

I have previously owned a shar pei before, but when my husband and I started planning on getting a new puppy I thought I would find a good book on shar pei. I bought three books originally but came to find that I like this one the best. Its simple and not very big, but is filled with lots of information. Info ranges from caring for you puppy or adult dog, health concerns, nutrition, obedience training and information about the shar pei breed. I would reccommend this book to anyone who has or is getting a shar pei.

I am brand new to the breed Shar Pei's and recently bought 2 puppies for my husband for Christmas (now 3 1/2 months old). I knew that the breed was an excellent temperment for families and small children (they met my niece who is 1 1/2 yrs old and they ignored her for the most part, but played well with her, and she liked them).

I wanted a book that would tell me about the breed, possible health problems that they may have, and general living and training tips. This book absolutley fit the bill. It's the square deal.

First off, the author recognizes that this breed does have health issues, and lists those off. For a new owner, or possible owner, this lets you know what happens SPECIFIC to the Shar Pei. I have read other Shar Pei books and found them to be very general to dogs, and not just to Shar Peis.

Surfing the net, it seems hard to find specific information that you want to know before going to the vet. We live in a rural area, so our vet has not dealt with many Shar Pei's, so as the owner, I want to be as knowlegeable as possible when discussing possible problems. I found this book to help out with learning those aspects.

Overall, I fully recommend you to buy this book. Buy this book if you are considering buying a Shar Pei, and it will let you know what you are getting into.

After 4 litters, I have decided to give one of these books to each of our new owners. It is a down to earth, easy read. Anyone who reads this book should feel comfortable with the contents. They will come to know that the Shar-pei is one of the best breeds around. That is why I breed them and would recommend this book to all.

This book tell you everything you want to know about the sharpei,even how to train and educate your dog,everything about health, behavior, etc... You won't need any other book.

This book describes the shar-pei breed very well. It has enough description and details that allows knowledge of the breed without over doing it. It has information from puppy years to old age. I truely recommend this book , not just newbie's, but for people to whom already have the privilege of owning a shar-pei.

I thought that the book was great. It gave me a better understanding of the breed. It also helped me with the choosing of my puppy (a Chinese shar-pei). Thanks amazon.com for having a book on the breed in which I have been trying to find out more information about.

JoAnn Redditt has been involved with the Chinese Shar-Pei for decades, and is the most qualified of all the authors who have written about the breed in my opinion. She currently publishes The Barker magazine, the official publication of the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America. She also judges the breed in Puppy Sweepstakes from time to time. Even though this book is now over 10 years old, it is still the best, most accurate one I have read to date. With all due respect to the professional authors who are paid to write about a given breed, I find this book, written by someone who has been there, done that, to be the tops. It is the one I recommend first on my own web site.

The author, a pioneer in the breed, traces the Shar-Pei's amazing renaissance and provides vital information every owner will treasure.

This book is an excellent source on the Shar-Pei. There is so much specific to the Shar-Pei that you must experience it firsthand to understand it which she does wonderfully. I wish I had this book when I first started with the breed. Solutions and remedies that she offers in the book have gotten results with my dogs that have even shocked my vets! A must have for ANY Shar-Pei owner, whether it's your pet or your a breeder.

Can't complain about something that does exactly what it says it does. Shar Pei's from A to Z. Would've like a bit more on health care and maybe even a bit on basic training, but still very good.

MOST BOOKS THAT I FOUND THOUGHOUT THE BOOKSTORES ARE BRIEF AND BASICALLY COVERS THE FROSTING ON A CAKE. I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE VERY DETAILED AND TO THE POINT. IT CONTAINED INFORMATION THAT WAS UNAVAILABLE ELSEWHERE. IT IS HANDY AND I WILL USE IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

The book was very informative. The pictures were clear and in color, which actually showed and told you what you were looking at. Out of 3 books I've bought on Shar-pei, this one was not a waste of my money.

I think this book is just awesome

I really agree with one of the previous reviews. This book has very little information that is specific to the shar pei breed. It contains info about the history of the shar pei and the characteristics of the breed, but that is all stuff that you can find for free just from shar pei sites. The other information is general to practically all dogs, such as housebreaking, dental care, and finding a lost dog. I would not reccommend this book if you are really looking for information specific to the shar pei.

I bought this book after getting our first shar pei and now three years later after getting our second I still find myself going to the book as a reference. I would recommend new owners buy the book prior to finding a breeder and making a purchase because it gives really good advice on what to look for and even whether or not the breed is right for you. The book takes you through step by step everything you need to know the breed from health, care, temperament, etc. I highly recommend this book.

I ordered this book when I knew I was getting 2 Shar Pei's for Christmas. I am not familiar with the breed so did a ton of surfing on the net about them. This book received high ratings, so I ordered it.

I did not think that this book offered enough information regarding health problems specific to the Shar Pei breed. It generally would reference anything that a dog could contract, but did not discuss what the Shar Pei breed could run into. I found that to be lacking.

Also, it spent many pages about training for Sport which you may or may not choose (beyond sit, stay, etc.) To tought yourself as a Shar Pei book, I did not find that it discussed Shar Pei specific topics. I would not recommend buying this book if you are familar with dogs in general, and are buying a Shar Pei.

If you have never lived/raised a dog, this is a short book to read for general ideals about dogs.

This is a really lovely book. Dr. Ackerman mostly telling about the medical problems of the Shar-Pei. Holds a lot of information about the breed and beautifull color picture. A real cute book.

This would be a good book for shar-pei owners.
