I was introduced to Pete recently and was lucky enough to be in Myrtle Beach SC where an exhibition of "Pete" (oh yeah, and that guy who paints him!) were on display at the local Art Museum. Bought the book and now plan on buying a copy for everyone I know. Whether you like cats (black or otherwise) Pete will find a way to make you smile, laugh, and maybe contemplate the world around you with a whole new set of eyes... Enjoy the book and then get ready to clear some wall space for the art it introduces to you!

Anyone who has a cat will love this book. Pete-the-cat is a little blue guy who will work his way into your heart immediately. Also great for lovers of art, as Pete is found in many of the masters. This makes a great gift too!

We are perhaps two of Pete's (and James') greatest fans. We were introduced to Pete the Cat from a friend in Athens Georgia, and while attending UGA (go Dawgs (sorry Pete) we purchased a number of Pete the Cat items from various galleries in the area.

On Saturday May 5th, 2007 while day tripping in New Orleans from Jackson Mississippi (where we now live), we stumbled on Mr. James Dean painting his latest and greatest creation of Pete. I bought a copy of his book, my wife's Mom bought my wife a copy of "Psychiatry Pete" for her as she is a professional in the field. Mr. Dean mentioned selling 3 copies in Atlanta (ours is number 4) the weekend prior. I jokingly mentioned that it was probably a friend of ours. Sure enough it was. The morale.......once Pete gets his claws in you, they are in for life, furthermore Pete is everywhere.

Now on with the book.......I LOVE IT.....it shows all the misadventures of Pete, and also all the rest of the pictures we have still to buy.
Personal favorite? Creation.

An artistic delight for anyone with a sense of whimsey. It's a must for cat fans and for students of art who like to see how an artist develops his style over the years. Dean also reinterprets great art--such as the Mona Lisa, holding Pete the Cat, or the famous Abbey Road picture of the Beatles, who are trailed by....yes, Pete the Cat. Love it!

A Useful Text For The College Classroom And Beyond

Katherine C. Grier has written a book that is both entertaining and informative. Although I don't think it was intended to be a textbook, it will be a very useful book to use in the college classroom...students will not fail to be engaged by it, which will result in good discussions and thus more learning about the way our society views companion creatures. Dr. Grier blends history and visual images in a way that supports and extends the reader's general comprehension and enjoyment of the many interesting facts in it. Beyond it's usefulness in my classes, though, I have to say that this book is probably one of the best reference works for the history of pets in America that has been written to date. It's also fun to look at the pictures. It is the work of a rare type of scholar: she "reaches the student before she teaches the student." I'm going to make this a required book in my classes next Fall. Thanks, Dr. Grier, for a job well done!Pets in America: A History

It's true that Americans love their pets. Ask anyone at school or work and your will usually get quite a story about the family pet. Katherine Grier's Pets in America: A History is a wonderful attempt to trace the history of pets in America. It is ironic to see how the social development of Americans so closely parallels the sociological importance of our pets.

This book is absolutely recommended for you or the pet lover in your life. It is filled with little pithy facts about pet ownership down through the ages. For instance, I was pleasantly surprised to read of George Washington's hounds and the level to which his personal correspondence referenced them.

Pet ownership has existed in some form since the 1500s and continues to grow in popularity. I found it intriguing how much of pet inclusion is tied directly to our sociological evolution. For instance, our incorporation of pets into photographs directly corresponds to American's desire to share memories with their posterity. The modern purveyor of the digital camera doesn't even give Fluffy a second thought to being included in a photo spread.

Grier also shares the realities for capitalism which increasing pet ownership brought to America. In some of these sections the minutiae will creep to the surface. You would be ill advised to sit down and read it in a few sittings. I did this and found myself absorbed in the details.

Instead, read this book in small chunks. It is filled with incredible information about pet ownership - and every pet lover will find it a must have for their library. George Bernard Shaw said it best: "Animals are my friends, and I don't eat my friends." I wouldn't recommend you eat your pets - but I do recommend you read this book.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a yummy book!

"Pets in America", an astonishingly comprehensive new book by Katherine C. Grier, relates the history of pets as we have known them from the earliest days of our nation. In doing so, she has given us a compelling look at the evolution of how different animals became popular pets, how we treat pets as a society and what their needs are compared to ours.

Grier begins by asking "what is a pet?" and then follows up with remarks about "why pets matter". She sets the stage for the reader to begin to view the animals we call "pets" (and what Americans in the nineteenth century called "favorites") in a different way than just furry little creatures that greet us upon our return home. One of the many surprises I found in reading "Pets in America" was that one hundred to one hundred fifty years ago the most popular pet to have was a caged bird. She explains part of the reason by saying that there was far less noise around then and songbirds added a cheerful level of volume that was most welcome in many homes.

While Grier's book understandably covers dogs, cats, birds and fish as the most common pets to find around the house, there is also a good deal of writing about livestock animals.....horses, swine, barnyard fowl and rabbits. There are many quotes from diarists of the 1800s and the most alluring ones come from children. Being much closer to "pets as dinner" she quotes a few girls who couldn't stand the thought of losing a newborn calf or lamb, knowing that it would end up on someone's dinner table....possibly their own. There's also a charming section on "the Bunnie States of America"....a club set up in 1898 by the children of an Albany, New York couple who had rules and regulations for their club, held meetings and wrote of the happenings of their beloved rabbits.

Grier takes an awful lot of time in the middle of the book describing the liberal goodness of the upper middle class and their views toward treating animals with kindness and respect. Although she presents her case effectively, it is the one place where "Pets in America" bogs down a little but she picks right up again with a chapter titled, "Pet keeping and its dilemmas". As animals moved closer to humans with their increased indoor contact, boundaries necessitated change. Understandably, at the same time, livestock became more foreign to many Americans with the advent of the automobile, as horses were decreasingly necessary for transportation. However, Grier describes in great detail what city life was like prior to that with pigs running through the streets, chickens cackling in many a backyard and the undeniable stench of horse manure. The seemy side of pet life....those who dealt in the selling, trading and butchering of pets is a terrific addition to the work. It's hard to believe, sometimes, that we are just a few generations removed from all of that.

The author finishes up with a look at the twentieth century arrival (on a large scale) of pet stores, pet food and other accoutrements such as "clothing" and bedding. There is not much about veterinary medicine in this book other to say that in earlier times, a pet's best caregiver (and often its only doctor) was its owner.

Many wonderful, early photographs and drawings accompany "Pets in America". It's a welcome addition to a fantastic book. I highly recommend "Pets in America" for its depth and incisiveness and I applaud Katherine Grier for combining a straightforward analysis with an outstanding narrative.

This book is fascinating. This book is about cat nutrition and what is important for cats.

Cats never ate cooked foods through the thousands of years of regeneration. Their natural selection process was based on their lifestyle and the foods available to them. Raw.

Humans have always eaten a variety of foods - cooked, fermented, salted, dried, raw. This book should not be used as proof as to what is best for humans. Humans evolution process was based on varied foods and varied storage/fresh methods of preparation.

THis book is about cats and what diet is best for their bodies to remain as they were created over the millions of generations. Should only be proof that a health organism is entirely effected by the dietary choices and food sources. Best dietary choices for each animal (human included) should be based on the history and evolution of THAT species.

Excellent book! Highly recommended

Pottenger's nutrition studies of cats clearly indicate the importance of quality nutrition. They also help understand why people in our society have such problems with poor health, given the poor quality food that they consume. The book is relatively easily understandable, as long as you don't put extensive effort into trying to understand the content of the tables of data.

Pottenger's Cats is a classic in the science of nutrition. Dr. Pottenger discovered quite by accident that cats degenerated unless they were fed raw food. In his 10-year study of 900 cats, he found the optimal diet for his cats was 2/3 raw meat and 1/3 raw milk plus a little cod liver oil. If either the meat or the milk was cooked, the cats degenerated. And if both were cooked, the degeneration was much worse, and the cats could no longer reproduce by the third generation.

Some of the problems Pottenger found in the cats fed cooked food were: heart problems; nearsightedness and farsightedness; underactivity and inflammation of the thyroid; infections of the kidney, liver, testes, ovaries and bladder; arthritis and inflammation of the joints; inflammation of the nervous system with paralysis and meningitis. And in the third generation, some of the cats' bones became as soft as rubber. Lung problems, and bronchitis and pneumonia were also frequent. Moreover, the females became irritable and even dangerous, and the males became passive and lacked sex interest.

Do many of these conditions sound familiar? Pottenger, of course, realized that his cat studies didn't apply entirely to humans. He believed nonetheless that his findings for cats did have relevance for humans, and in his sanitarium he fed his patients much raw food, with considerable success. Weston A. Price reported in his book, "Nourishing Traditions" that all of the people's he studied worldwide included much raw food in their traditional diets and were almost entirely free of the degenerative diseases that are rampant in our junk food society, such as tooth decay, heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, digestive disturbances, etc.

If you want to stay healthy, you owe it to yourself to read both Pottenger and Price. Their eye opening photographs alone will make clear to you that you need optimum nutrition if you want to be optimally healthy.

This is one of the better books on self-publishing. Although it's only about 100 pages, it contains a lot of useful information. I appreciate the fact that this author has actually self-published her own books. You may be surprised to learn that several of the self-publishing books that I read were written by authors that had never self-published a book.

The major negative comment that I have about this book that it was published back in 1992. Much has changed since then and some of the information is outdated. This is the reason that I cannot give it 5 stars. I hope that the author is working on an updated edition.

If you plan to self-publishing a book, this would be a good book to start with, but I would recommend that you also purchase some other books that have more recent publication dates.

When I read the back of this book I wasn't sure I even wanted to read it. I wasn't to thrilled with the idea of reading about five actresses who were fighting over the same job, but it was the only book I could get my hands on at the time. My desire to read won.

I can even begin to tell you how glad I am I read this novel. It had my interest from the beginning. I was amazed at how well developed all of the characters were as well as how different. I found myself choosing sides with the different actresses and rooting for a winner. I would have missed out on a great book had I decided not to pick this one up after all.

Joan Collins can put novelist to her resume now with this page-turner of the rich and rotten. Her brochette of characters are a likable bunch, as they suffer and suffer during the making of a nightime soap opera. And bubbles sure do float in this glossy, effective novel. Collins's prose is sharp, witty and wicked, with a fast-moving plot and glamorous descriptions of clothing, sexual escapades, champagne and caviar parties--all the right ingredients for making PRIME TIME a one sitting read. Yes, glitter is her game, but can you really expect anything else from the queen of television's melodrama herself ?-----Martin Boucher

This is one of my favorite animal ark books! It is about an owner who comes into the ark with an Old English sheep dog puppy that isn't responding. It turns out that the pup is deaf and cannot be a working dog. Then one day Mandy and James are having a dog wash and at the end of the day they find and old English sheep dog puppy supposedly abandoned in a water puddle. I won't give the book away but it has to do with a puppy mill and two people mixed up in it! Please read this book it is great!

Future veterinarian Mandy Hope, and her best friend James Hunter can't wait until the last day of school - which is quickly approaching. It is at this time that they'll finally be reunited with their close friend, John Hardy, the son of the proprietors of the Fox and Goose, who is currently away at boarding school. But the end of the school year also marks another very special occasion - We Love Animals Day! Mandy has participated in We Love Animals Day for years, and each year she strives to come up with a wonderful idea to raise money and awareness for animals. This year, however, she is determined to do everything she can to raise as much money as possible. And with the help of James, she knows that she'll be able to do just that. But Mandy's mind keeps wandering away to the tiny Old English Sheepdog that her father, and resident Animal Ark veterinarian, Dr. Adam, diagnosed as being deaf. Mandy can't help but feel sorry for the puppy, who will spend the rest of his days in silence, never knowing what it's like to hear his name called, or hear the voices of children playing. But Mandy's sadness turns to frustration and anger when she stumbles upon another Old English Sheepdog puppy abandoned in the parking lot of the Fox and Goose. The little pup is weak, and hungry, and made up of skin and bones, and no one has claimed her. Mandy knows that something strange is going on - and so do her parents. So, with the help of James, Mandy begins investigating the situation, attempting to pinpoint where these Old English Sheepdog puppies are coming from, and who would treat them so cruelly. But then she begins to wonder whether they're being mistreated by a local breeder, and realizes that maybe she'll need more than just James' help. Maybe this time, she'll need the help of someone more powerful - like the SPCA.

As someone who volunteered at an animal shelter for years, and is the owner of a deaf cat - who I adopted - I have seen various animals come and go who have been mistreated by not only their owners, but breeders, as well. These animals are often overlooked by society, so I was thrilled to find that Ben M. Baglio would shine a spotlight on the problem by creating an entire ANIMAL ARK book about it. PUPPY IN A PUDDLE is a wonderful depiction of puppy mills and the breeding business, in general. It not only shows the genetic problems puppies (or any animal, for that matter) can inherit from their parents, as well as how they are often cast aside by the people using them as a business. Mandy, as always, is a sympathetic character, whose determination to get to the bottom of the problem is admirable, as well as heroic. Her ability to stay cool, calm, and collected as she investigates the problems - no matter how harsh - are inspiring; while her kindness towards the "suspects" still shines through. Mandy's sidekick, James, also deserves a mention, as he is quick-thinking, and slightly calculating, and Mandy would not survive without his wits. A remarkable addition to the series.

Could a local dog breeder be mistreating puppies? Not only that but several liters? And seperating them from their mom too soon? fond out by reading.

We have several little cat friends around the home and this is a great "general reference" on cat care. It is easy to read and well indexed with loads of information on what to do to keep your cat happy and healthy. For "cat first aid and emergency care", however, I would recommend an additional book sold on Amazon, "Help! The Quick Guide to First Aid for Your Cat." By Michelle Bamberger (DVM). She really outlines, with excellent drawings, what to do in a life or death emergency situation with your cat. With both of these books, from Amazon, you'll have an excellent library on cat health and emergency care.

At 222 pages long, it's an enjoyable romp through watercolor pages that are little works of art, each accompanying a thought provoking saying penned by Ms. Zobel. Gratifiying for kids and adults alike, it contains large doses of the ahh and ha ha factor. Each page w/ saying could be a framable work of art but then, you'd have to buy another book....better to have restraint and just look at the book often. Purr More, Hiss Less overflows with heartfelt thoughts on how to live a joyous life, based on kitty wisdom. Author Allia Zobel Nolan has perfectly captured the magical eyes through which cats see the world. The enchantment continues with Erika Oller's beautiful illustrations.

All of the insights in this charming book will bring a smile, but two that really touched me are "Do the right thing...even when there's no one watching" and "Retain a kitten-like sense of wonder." Imagine how the world might be if we lived by those ideas?

This book will be treasured by cat lovers of all ages!

This book is chock full of wisdom - kitty and otherwise. 'Take the good fleas with the bad,' bestselling author Allia Zobel Nolan advises readers of Purr More, Hiss Less: Heavenly Lessons I Learned from My Cat.

If I had to pick my favorite it would be, 'Don't stick your paws where they don't belong.' There are smiles to be had on all 224 pages. This gem of a book is lovingly illustrated by Erika Oller. The combination of Allia's wit and Erika's watercolors is a winning match.

Buy this just-released book as a gift for anyone (young or old) in your life who adores cats. As Allia says, 'It's okay to be hooked on a feline.' ... So while you're at it, why not pick up a copy for your neighborhood cat lady?

The pictures are beautiful and the paper quality is excellent. I was so glad to find this on Amazon because it wasn't available from the calendar stand in the mall.

I own a ragdoll cat and love to look at the pictures of other ragdoll cats. I would love to post a picture of my own. Maybe some day. Anyway, I look forward to a new calendar each year.
