I picked up this book quite by chance, and it has become an enduring family favorite (we have 8 children). Little ones can quite easily empathize with Baby Blue Cat's being tempted and eating more cookies than he intended, and it is reassuring to them to see that mommies still love their babies even when they make mistakes.

This is a great book!

I was given a copy of this book when I was seven years old, and it was one of my very favorites. Now as an adult it is the only kids book I have kept and I can't wait to read it to my sister's baby who will be born in august. This book is wonderful and the pictures are adorable. It is a great addition to any little one's library.

This was a beautiful book by Ainslie Pryor. The soft illustrations, a little bit of humor, and a wonderfully kind mother cat made it a book that my son and I loved together when he was little. I wanted to buy this as a gift for my new nephew and was very disappointed to find that it's out of print.

I used this book while reading to Kindergarten students. The concept of making a mistake and eating all the cookies was easy for them to understand. The pictures were simple and fun. They predicted events and dialogue, reading along with me. If the repetition in this book had been a bit more consistant, I would have given it a full 5 stars.

Well designed planner - entertaining as well

This is one of the best day planners I've come across. It's spiral bound, so it sits flat on your desk without curling, unlike most other planners I've seen. It has more than adequate room for daily appointments and such. I love the subject matter - I'm a huge cat fan, but I don't really care for the "cutesy" cat stuff. My own cats can be inscrutable jerks at times, and the photos and captions in the planner capture the moments when cats are both snotty and adorable perfectly. My personal favorite is the Prince Valiant on Nov. 12th - I crack up every time I look at it.

I'm hopeful that the publisher will release a 2008 version - I'm not looking forward to trying to find another planner I can live with for a year.

I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but I loved this one. It's about a little bear who plays too roughly with a kitten, and his dad keeps telling him to be gentle with her. Let me just state this right now: I love misanthropic writers, such as Jim Goad and Florence King. Most of the books I read are pessimistic, angry, and explore the dark side of human nature. However, I have no shame in saying that a book about a bear and a kitten nearly brought me to tears. If that makes me a wuss, so be it

Gentle lesson for sibling rivalry

Review Date: 2006-06-10
This book really caught our toddler's attention. Simple drawings, strong point. There has been a bit of sibling rivalry at our house, our older daughter is a bit jealous of our younger one at times and will be "not so gentle" or sometimes if she's overly excited, she might squeeze her little sister. After reading this book many times, we switched the names and put our daughter's names in - something clicked... she's been a lot... gentler! As always, check out your local library.

Warmhearted Toddler Tale

Review Date: 2003-10-26
Poor kitty! "She's only little, Ba," a big gentle bear named George says repeatedly. A big bear hug from Bartholomew, and the kitten gets squashed. A playful squirt with the water hose, and kitten gets soaked. A rowdy drum serenade, and the kitten has had enough. Author illustrator Virginia Miller wrote this after her first book about the little bear with the big name, On Your Potty, grew in popularity. She enhances her spare text (only 203 words) with illustrations outlined in wide pencil and colored with soft, earth-toned markers. Ba is now out of diapers, but does not seem to be out of his "Terrible Two" stage. Be Gentle is my daughter's favorite Bartholomew bear story. Your toddler will not be able to get enough of this tale of well-meant but misplaced affection. I recommend the book Bartholomew Bear, a collection of five toddler tales of the same lovable bear at a great price.

A wonderful book that kids can relate to!

"Be Gentle!" is the perfect book for toddlers learning the intricacies of proper social behavior. This book is my two year old's favorite because he knows many of the words. He has heard the phrase "be gentle" many times since the birth of his little sister, and this book helps him to truly understand what that means. He also gets excited because the book uses familiar objects such as a swing, a red wagon, and a drum in the storyline so he can sympathize with the characters. A great book for new, young siblings.

This was a brilliant book packed with creative stories and pictures. The pictures act as a portal too far off places and add life to her tales. Her passion and enthusiasm for family, animals, and nature can be felt throughout her work. The book reads like a diary which helps you follow her day-to-day throughout Europe and Norway. It feels as though she's telling you in person of her amazing journeys. This book was a delightful read and holds a little something for everybody.

Beaver Creek Blues is a refreshing work of art. Kleven-Jensen has a profound gift for beautiful, rich, spine-tingling prose, and she uses it to weave a delightful tapestry of essays and poems about genuine life on the prairie and beyond. Her eye for small details brings her poignant short stories to life, sometimes mournful and sometimes joyful in the same page. The works are original, void of cliché'. Some of her phrases are stunning; you feel compelled to read them over and over, like a fine bouquet of wine lingering on your palate. Her writing is nicely complemented by relevant and interesting photos interspersed throughout the book. This is a rare find. I ordered extra copies as gifts for friends.

This is one of my favorite books. It is so simple and beautifully told, gently imparting an important message of selflessness. It is a modern fable. Each page is an amusing "chapter" to an adventure with a gratifying surprise ending. I love how the author respects kids' ability to be kind and creative without the prodding of adults. The illustrations, painstakingly, gorgeously rendered in cut paper, are facinating. Like the story, the pictures are a celebration of a conscientious approach to life.

what a wonderful book. I love the illustrations and the rhyming text. My 2 1/2 year old son (also named Benny!) loves to hear this book over and over. He has many parts memorized, too. It is nice to read a book in which the main character, who could easily spend the money on himself, finds something for his mother, brother, sister, cat, and dog, spending one of his five new shiny pennies on each of them. He gets nothing for himself, except many "thank you"s and that great feeling of giving!

This is a very funny book in ways that adults will appreciate, from the relative intelligences of Nigel the cat and Julia the dog to Julia's observation that the small clothes that the lady brings home before the baby is born are not for her. A must buy picture book.

I took this book from our library, for the little boys I babysit (1 1/2 and 2 years old). They like this book, and I really like it too. The story is good, and it's also very funny (to me anyway). I love the line Julia the dog says about the toilet "I love that toilet!" The illustrations are very cute. Hi! You can call me StoryMaker. Bow Wow Meow Meow is a great and unique poem book that focuses on cats, dogs, and their relatives. When we got it from the library, it was a much darker pink then it is in the Amazon.com photo. I memorized many poems in it. There are great illustrations and on the back, you will probably see two paintings, one of a cat and one of the dog. If you look closely, the dog has the word "cat" written on it and the cat has the word "dog" on it. An example of one of the poems is:

"Who always yanks the tail of the Manx?"

Short poem, isn't it? Here's another short one:

"Why ocelots have lots of spots puzzles oc-elot."

Don't worry, that's not as long as they get. For example, "Dog Log" is much longer, therefore I haven't memorized it. Great poems and lots of humor, too. However, I do not like how they insult bulldogs in their bulldog poem. Everyone is giving bulldogs a bad reputation because long ago bulldogs held on to bull's noses and were swung around. Bulldogs are nicer nowadays. Overall, a nice poem book all about pets, wolves, and every type of wild cat. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

As always, Mr. Florian writes and illustrates poetry on a young child's level. His poetry is short and to the point, and his illustrations are extremely creative. "The Poodles" and "The Dalmatian" is a great example of utilizing the features of the animal in the poem format. Mr. Florian gets young children excited about poetry and shows them that poetry can be uncomplicated and fun.

Twenty-one brief, humorous poems

Review Date: 2003-04-07
Poet and painter Douglas Florian barks up the right tree in the young people poetry month release, "Bow Wow Meow Meow: It's Rhyming Cats and Dogs." Twenty-one brief, humorous poems about a kennel of dog and cat varieties playfully prowl its pages, accompanied by childlike watercolor portraits of each species being analyzed in verse. (Another quirky pleasure comes from the fact that Florian's loose, playful watercolors were painted on primed brown paper bags with bits of collage.) Setting the stage for the book's first half is "Dog Log" with its deadpan "to do" list of the average dog: "Rolled out of bed./ Scratched my head./ Brought the mail./ Wagged my tail.../ Chewed a shoe --/ Table, too." The next ten spreads all focus on a different doggie from the bulldog to wolf. Typical is "The Chihuahua" which manages to hilariously evoke the sound of the little beast: "Chihuahua seems a sorry sight:/ So small in stature, weight, and height./ But it can bark a brouhaha: / Chi-hua! hua! hua! hua! hua! hua! hua!" Segregating the cats from the dogs, the second half is devoted to the felines, starting with the lilting "Cat Chat" introduction, and ends with "The Black Panther": "Black on black / With big eyes green --- / At night the panther's sight is keen,/ A stalking shadow, sly and sleek,/ That every night plays hide-and-seek." As a poetry collection, this is the best-conceived, least-pretentious and most-fun work in years. The idea is simplicity at its best, perfectly conceived and cleverly executed with a just-right balance of smarts and playfulness. The witty, insightful nature of the poems is sure to delight all ages, particularly fans of ee cummings, Ogden Nash and Bennett Cerf. Even concrete poetry admirers will pleasantly note the subtly original ways in which simple type layouts are occasionally used to enhance the rhythms and rhymes, such as the lines of "The Poodles" which are each set in a tight swirl, mimicking their subject's "oodles and oodles or curls." Doggone good. To borrow a pun from Florian, it would "puzzle ocelot" if this didn't end up an award-winner by year's end.

This book is nearly a complete resource for all breeders, if I could choose only one cat book to keep this would be the one.

It is well written, thought-out, and VERY informative. Any question you have about breeding is answered here. It is simply the best cat breeding book I have ever read.

This is a wonderful book...a must have!

Re: "What do you love": There is nothing wrong with breeding beautiful purebred cats or dogs... If people raised and loved each OTHER right there would be no need for shelters. If children are taught from a young age to love and respect each other then compassion for ALL living things will naturally follow. I believe good, honest breeders are the perfect example of that! They take on great responsibility with endless love, devotion and compassion.

This is a well done book. A new version with color photos would be a bit more helpful, but for someone considering breeding it's a must, and even for a more seasoned breeder it's a good brush up. I take it out every time I have a litter. As an aside, the between chapter "cat/people" jokes make it an ejoyable read. Some of the references are a little outdated, but the material is not; some things don't change that much. Breeding cats is one of those, highly recommend.
