This is the most profound and challenging interpretation of Dickinson I have ever encountered. It certainly should be on the required reading list of any serious scholar attempting to understand the true spirit of Dickinson. The book does a wonderful job of demonstrating Dickinson's place within her time and society. It forces the reader to reconsider conventional views on the "why" of Dickinson's poetry. Beth Maclay Doriani has done a superb job. I look forward to Doriani's next work.

People jaded by flavor-of-the-month educational reforms will be relieved there are still teachers with the common sense to value insight, warmth, and the personal touch. Remember the worst teacher you ever had? You'll want to smack them (gently) over the head with this book, which makes brilliant teaching look easy, yet is honest enough to disclose that it is anything but. Moving, powerful, personal, surprising. I am hard pressed to identify a serious flaw that will provide balance to my review.

Mr. Holzwasser's case study is fascinating; his research top-notch. Note to all aspiring mechanical engineers: read Holzwasser's work and learn. Rather than fall into the traps of varying too many variables or getting bogged down in unnecessary detail -- Holzwasser is concise and to the point. Bravo!

Required reading for every mental health professional
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-04
This book, one of a series on mental health law in different states, should be required reading for every practicing mental health clinician. First in a narrative section and then in a question-and-answer format, the book covers key aspects of the law (civil commitment, guardianship, confidentiality, subpoenas, consultation, criminal issues, liability and record-keeping) that are relevant to, and affect, clinical practice. It covers these issues with thoughtfulness, elegant writing and with empathy and respect for the reader. And, it makes the law alive, vital and exciting. Reading it is like listening to a very intelligent conversation that explains how the law understands, and supports, the work we do and invites us to think about the process of meetings its standards.

Although focused on Massachusetts law, I suspect that the book could also be helpful to clinicians from other areas because the issues addressed cut across state lines. The book teaches us about the law while weaving a story about the way the law interacts with, and informs, clinical practice. The book also shows us how the law has broadened the context of clinical practice to take the public welfare into account. The book teaches clinicians how to think about legal and ethical conflicts, how to approach these dilemmas in an intelligent way and how to protect ourselves from legal violations. For instance, the section on the landmark Tarasoff decision, which has affected practice in every state, covers the California decision in detail, the way it has been modified to fit mental health practice in Massachusetts and how it gets played out in actual practice.

This book is an important reference work that clinicians will want to consult often as a very readable guide to ethically and legally sound practice. I recommend it highly

This is a densely packed little book. I was very glad to come across it, personally. I am rather tired with every book I pick up about the Puritans being a psychological deconstruction. This straight-forward book, instead, is full of facts, personal accounts, item inventories, drawings and diagrams that are extremely helpful in getting a picture of how these people lived, centuries ago.

This is an old book, first published in 1935, but it doesn't make it any less relevant today. Every area of life is considered, from the voyage to New England down to sports and games. Many documents are presented without any commentary at all, and you can come to your own conclusions.

The illustrations are many and are helpful alongside the text to bring these people to life.

Whether you're a student of history or a genealogist, if you're interested in this era at all there is no reason not to own this book. Some people think that the Masschusetts Bay Colony gets little attention compared to Plymouth and Virginia. Whether that's true or not, Everyday Life will give you instant insight into the colony and the colonists personal lives.

Ronald Watkins' account of this horrible crime was written in a most compassionate and considerate way. While he informed the reader in detail the senseless and depraved manner in which Suzanne Rossetti died, he did so with an obvious caring for Suzanne's family and friends. As a resident of Arizona, I have had the opportunity to visit the crime scene and have followed the demise of Jesse Gilles, one of Suzanne's killers. To my relief, he was finally executed in Arizona in January of 1997. I hope for more books by Mr. Watkins on other true crime subjects.

"Exhibiting Contradictions" is a terrific collection. It may well be unique in its field, moreover, for containing NO academic jargon. No sites are contested, no subject positions are occupied. Amazing! The clear writing makes it an excellent book both for specialists and for those with a general interest in art and art history, the changing role of museums, and the quote-unquote politicization of art. My favorite essays was the one on the exhibit of Art about the American West at the Smithsonian a few years ago, which caused such a huge flap because it challenged the myth of the Romance of the West. I also was fascinated by the essay on plaster-cast museums, a now forgotten institution of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth century. But the whole collection is very satisfying, full of ideas and knowledge. Wallach has very interesting things to say about the role of the museum in contemporary life -- part shopping mall, part leisure-time scene , part--still! -- otherworldly repository of the Timeless and Eternal.
