McDermott's Papagayo is our favorite of his spectacular books for the 4-8 year olds (we have them all). His illustrations are brilliant, even suitable for framing. Caution may be in order, however, for younger children or those "afraid of the dark" or "monsters". This mythological tale is a bit spooky--we love it!

My 6 year old son is obsessed with this book. We originally took it out from the library. He insisted reading it every night until he could memorize it. He loved it so much we bought it for his birthday. He loves the rythm of the book, all the fruit and colors. He can read it on his own now and wants to take it to school to share with his class. It is also available in Spanish - I think I'd like to read that version as well.

If you handfeed birds or plan to this is a must have book. It's a great reference not only for general information on how to feed, but also the problems that can occur while doing so. It also details proper handling and sanitation procedures to keep disease from spreading within a flock. Small breeders may not be able to emulate all the procedures outlined in the book. Regardless, it is an excellent source of information on how an ideal facility should operate (something any size aviary should know).
For breeders who incubate their own eggs I suggest Parrot Incubation Procedures by Rick Jordan as well.

This delightful book is a must for children and their parents. It involves the child in the charming story and ends with a "recipe" that child and parent(s) can do together. This is great because it fosters the child's reading, and it gives the parent(s) a chance to bond with the child in a creative exercise. I know that the author has more books to publish in this series and I wholeheartedly encourage her. My hat off to you Debbie Pollard. You are giving children a wonderful book to read and allowing parents, teachers, etc. a fantastic tool for communication.

I really enjoyed reading the book to my niece and nephew. Penelope's experiences with the first day of school, they really related to. The colorful drawings and characters really kept them interested and the visit to the Penelope website was fun. The kids were happy to see that Penelope's first day of school turned out fine and I was pleased to see that her mom saved the day. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Penelope had both parents, most books nowadays only feature one parent. The first mention of milk & cookie time required a snack after finishing the book. The kids also insisted on making their favorite uncle, "Milk & Cookie Time" pancakes with the recipe in the back of the book. We can't wait to see the second book!

Herbie, Max, Charlie and Miles Penguin find happiness and tasty fish in New York City, playing the coolest jazz around. This story has something for everyone: funny penguins and silly scenes for kids, jazz jokes and parenting puns for the old(er) folks reading the story at bedtime. Colorful illustrations and an album of the quartet's snapshots of their visit to New York round out the package. Pure fun.

Well, I love travelling and I love penguins, I even collect them, so when I saw Joe and Sally in the cover with the great pyramids in the background, I knew this was a book for me. The pictures always put a big smile in my face as I see these penguins come alive. I never thought a book could be heart-warming, but this one really is.
Note to author: Mr. Puchner, please consider yourself cordially invited to bring Joe and Sally to Mexico anytime. We would love to see you around here and the penguins would look even lovelier with a nice suntan.
Wonderful work!

I love this book! And also it's companion, Penguins ABC - they make a great pair for any kid K to 2nd. This is a rhyming book that counts to 12.
"One little penguin alone in the snow,
Somehow it always knows where to go"
"Two penguins together are better than one,
Having a friend is always more fun"
"Standing together we add up to three,
If we add one more how many will we be?"
etc...
This is a good quality boardbook, and has nice photos of different kinds of penguins. I highly recommend it.

In this biography, John Bird masterly tells us about the live, thoughts and 'adventures' of one of the strangest music makers of all times, composer and pianist Percy Aldridge Grainger. A very complete book, which is special, for, as the author stresses in his preface, making an understandable view of the complicated life of Grainger, is not a simple task. Besides all important facts about 'Perks', the book contains lots of interesting backgroud information, letting us know under which circumstances and in what time the composer lived. Also an updated discography and a list of all places where manuscripts etc are to be found are included. The current edition is fully revised, the first print was released in the mid seventies. In one word: brilliant!!!

As with many composers, to understand the man is essential to understanding how to interpret his music. My reserach on "Lincolnshire Posy" would have been incomplete without this book. There is a lot of persistence on the author's part to present an accurate and indepth portrayal of one of the more eccentric figures in music. A shame that all biographies are not constructed with such care.

Petunia loves Charles so much she gathers the money to buy his freedom. This old fashioned love story would be as good for Valentines Day as Christmas, since its story is about true love, someone for everyone, and the power of true love.

The Petunia books are among my favourites from my childhood and are still enormously appealing to children. This story was originally published in 1960 and while elements might not appeal to some people now, it is in fact subversively a wonderful tale.
Petunia is goose who lives at Pumpkin farm. During a walk in the snow one day she comes across another goose called Charles at Windy Farm, he is being fattened up for Christmas dinner. Petunia is a pet so is not being fattened up - however she falls in love with Charles and vows to help him escape.
First she dresses up by painting herself as a terrible dragon. It works, but only briefly. Charles is led back to the farm - he is 20 pounds in weight and worth 75c a pound So then Petunia hatches a new plan, collecting pine to make christmas decorations and selling them, then she makes other decorations.
When she has enough money she rushes to the farm to buy his freedom. The farmer and his wife are so taken with her devotion that they give her Charles and her money back. She and Charles have a marvellous christmas party with all the animals (and Mr and Mrs Pumpkin) and live happily ever after with all their goslings
I am sure you can see the appeal. There are some gender roles in this with the farmer and his wife, but then there is Petunia who is tenacious, clever and completely out of stereotypical-female-role. She is a great role model as she peseveres until she finds the solution.
The drawings are in the sketchy style of the period with many as line drawings and some coloured. They are very appealing but sometimes I think I prefer the rich lush characters in other books. Petunia is a lovely quirky character to look at and to read about.
There are other Petunia books and I would highly recommend those as well.

On several occasions we would be able to quiet her crying spell by opening a Pip book. She is now 15 months old and she still loves them. These books are brightly colored and simple with a flap on each page for the little one to practice flipping too!

Most children's books fail to combine the simple with the complex. The illustrations are based on great basic line drawings and the stories paint adventures that are really engaging even for adults. Hollywood if you are listening, "The Adventures of Pip" would make a great animated series or movie!
Pip like Tucker is really, really good stuff.
