If you find yourself for a lack of avian indoor splendor, check-out this calendar. Every day has a bird or bird-related picture on it, plus a giant opposite-facing bird picture. It's stylishly formated & tastefully decorated. More than adequate block size allows for numerous tasks/appointments for each day. This calendar is finely sized and made from quality materials. Being Audubon, the picture quality of our feathered friends is excellent in many aspects. I highly recommend it. It'll add lift to your year!

Baby duck is great

Baby Duck is an everyman (everyduck?) who, without expecting it, finds himself led into a great adventure. Kind of like Frodo in Lord of the Rings (well, maybe not exactly). Anyway, the book is very engaging. The text is well-written and literate, and the illustrations are gorgeous. At first glance they appear a little cartoonish, but on closer examination you can easily see many subtle features, including Baby Duck's facial expressions and those of the other characters (except for the new friend, who is rubber!). I gave this book to several young friends this Christmas and it was very enthusiastically received. I would definitely recommend it.

This is the first book written by Frank Asch with his son Devin. Frank and Devin have created a most adorable book about a little duck who is anxious to explore the world beyond the inlet..but he can't break the rule of not going beyond the bridge without someone else with him...he meets his "new friend" that goes with him and the two have quite an adventure, and baby duck learns to fly by himself in order to get home...I don't want to give away the story line, but his new friend is a rubber ducky that baby duck thinks is real...as always, the illustrations are priceless.

A humorous adventure

"Baby Duck's New Friend," by Frank Asch and Devin Asch, is a delightful children's book. The story concerns Baby Duck, who finds a "friend" in a rubber ducky that has fallen off a toy truck into the river. Baby Duck follows his silent friend into an adventure. This is a fun book with beautiful, full-color illustrations. Some of the best-rendered scenes include moonlight playing across the water's surface and a lighthouse beacon illuminating the waves. And Baby Duck is a very appealing character. Overall, a very good book.

I acculy know Mr. Colman, he came to my school to talk about his book before it was published. This is a really great book and fun to read because it's not just. In 1942, the bla bla bla of bla bla bla blaed throught the bla bla. The people were bla bla and bla bla. Bla bla was a professinal bla bla and bla....... It is better than that. It is great! and It's his first book.

A great read

In Colman's debut children's book, he takes the reader on a tour through American history with the flair of a great storyteller. The progress of the building of America is beautifully contrasted with the plight of the bald eagle. This book is one that adults will enjoy reading and discussing with children, as its many layers provide a variety of subjects, including history, eagles, stamp collecting and environmental responsibility, to talk about. The illustrations are truly lovely and fit the tone the writer set forth. There is also a section of notes in the back that flesh out the topics and provide reference materials, a great treat. All in all, highly recommended.

This book will bring information on several levels. Not only do you learn facts about the American bald eagle, but important times of U.S. history plus pictures of actual American postal stamps that tie in with the story. A great book for 3-5th grades.

Being a mom of 2 boys I look back on this book with fond memories. The original copy lays on my coffee table within reach of my children as well as the neighbors children who love to imitate the images. Most of these images are me as a child of 8. My kids get a kick at seeing me in these fun yoga poses.

Be a Frog, a Bird or a Tree is an excellent introduction to Yoga. I had no background in Yoga but felt very comfortable using this book to introduce a Yoga program to fairly large groups of six and seven year olds. They were excited to see the progress they made in learning each new pose. It is a clearly explained and illustrated program that very easily adapts to teaching young children and they enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed teaching it.

As a novice gardener, I have found many instructional books to be overwhelming; their scope is often too wide for my purposes. The Garden Project Workbook Series, however, provides clear instructions for a variety of creative yet practical designs.

With help from "Beds and Borders" I was able to implement my own design for a small border in my tiny front yard, a step that I would not have been able to accomplish on my own.

All of the books in this series are topical and very worthwhile. I highly recommend them.

Unusual Chiller With a Twist in the Tale
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-29
Bird is an understated, exciting chiller which captivated me the whole way through until the clever ending. Jane Adams' writing style is deceptively simple but she creates an intriguing atmosphere that draws the reader in. There are interesting flashbacks every few pages as the past is key in uncovering the present day mystery and these add to the tension.

The characters are very believable. Marcie is the lead, a young married woman who has become estranged from her family after they treated her badly. Now she has returned to stay with them for a while as her grandfather Jack is dying. However Jack keeps seeing the ghost of a woman called Rebekkah and eventually this ghost begins to haunt the entire family. Marcie begins to research into who this woman was and she comes to some pretty disturbing conclusions. The ending is surprising and wonderful with some deep psychological insight.

Overall Bird is a fast paced psychological chiller that I would recommend to anyone who likes thrillers, regardless of whether they enjoy a supernatural element or not. The English setting and characters are realistic, especially the cold and stilted relationship between Marcie and her grandmother and aunt Alice. The ending is memorable, making you question the motives of some of the characters.

Being a fan of Korean dramas, "Bird & Fish" made me fall in love with characters, shed tears & left me wanting more!

I can really felt a connection with Miss Leslie's main character "Wendy".
As a women, we can forget about our own needs while taking care of those around us.
I am also a fan of retail therapy (& a good bargain!), my private passion for dramas & once week trip to eat Korean food.

The story builds itself up in layers, like a women making kimchi, knowing how to season it just right.

I look forward to reading more of Miss Leslie's works.

A Drama in a book!

I adored this book! It is hard to know what to expect when it comes to an author's debut novel, as there are no previous works to compare it to. But there is nothing to worry about. Adrienne Leslie masterfully pulls off creating characters that the reader can easily relate to, whether it was uncertainties in decisions they made or situations they had to deal with, easily making Wendy and Jae's world seem as our own.

This book is a page turner. Like one of the many well done Korean dramas on TV these days, "Bird and Fish" manages to keep the reader on the edge of their seat as they nervously wonder what will happen next with the seemingly fragile yet complex relationship between the main characters. Truly, a drama in book form!

I received my gift copy of Adrienne Leslie's Bird and Fish - What a page
turner..I couldn't put it down..my favorite scene was the first meeting
Jae and Wendy - the lovers don't know their fate yet as they argue over
a paint sale..Leslie manages to share the spark between them ..

Most surprising was Yu Jin the successful Korean American, whose life
at closer inspection is falling apart..Seeing him drinking to forget his
complicated love life in his mistress' stairwell was gut wrenching.

Bird and Fish is a fast paced well written story that will appeal to
both men and women..I enjoyed reading it tremendously and highly
recommend it ...

Bird and Fish: a tale of love in NYC
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-23
This is Adrienne Leslie's first novel, and she's to be congratulated for weaving an emotionally complex tale on the framework of a simple, but fast paced storyline of inter-racial love in New York City. In doing so, she refreshingly avoids the politically correct pitfalls many authors (and Hollywood screen writers) have often fallen into: the significance of racial difference among people in love. Indeed, as the author stresses throughout, by the natural interaction of her characters, racial difference is hardly an issue at all for two people truly in love.

Jae Won is an artist from Korea, now living with his younger brother's family in NYC. His wife, in a fit of severe depression, has recently committed suicide. As a result, Jae Won retreats into himself, unable to erase a feeling of guilt, coupled with what he perceives to be a failure in his familial responsibilities. He has giving up his art and is content to live out his self-imposed exile, working as a clerk in his brother's paint store. Enter Wendy.

Wendy is a middle school teacher in the NYC public school system. Her abusive first husband has died, leaving her with a daughter who suffers from Crohn's Disease. Her second husband is a good man, but their relationship lacks the passion Wendy so desires. Indeed, for her, the marriage seems to have been more of a matter of convenience than of love. Wendy plods through life, surviving, rather than living, beset by her own health problems, and enduring the daily battle for her students and against the administrative apparatus of her school. Her only relief seems to be her friendship with her colleague, Libby, and her love for Korean dramas shown on television. Enter Jae Won.

Adrienne Leslie's own experiences as a teacher, along with her knowledge of Korea (and her own love for Korean dramas), lend an air of realism to this work. Bird and Fish is an easy read and, since it's written from a woman's perspective, will, most likely, be especially appealing to the female reading audience.

We purchased this for our 4 year old daughter and our whole family has learned a great deal about birds! The book is simple yet informative for the beginning bird enthusiast. The birdfeeder stays on the window well UNTIL squirrels try to climb in it. It is very difficult to keep squirrels out of this kind of feeder - they are tenacious and quite agile. Buy a copy of Outwitting Squirrels by Bill Adler if you want to contend with them. We have given this book and feeder as a birthday present to adults and children and everyone has loved it. Great price and quality.

I am in no way an expert birdwatcher, but this book and birdfeeder are so much fun to use. Like another reviewer, I was skeptical of birds actually coming to the feeder. In less than a week, they had not only found it, but were fighting to get inside it! The book is small, but well written and very informative for all ages, especially if you know very little about birdwatching. It makes the common birds you will see easy to identify. The feeder is great because it can be attached to a window pane, making up-close viewing possible from inside your house.
A great gift!

I purchased this book just after my son was born. I saw it in a flyer I received in the mail and thought it would be a great educational experience for my son to see the birds right outside of our window. Not long after he turned 2, I installed it on our living room window. A few days went by and I was afraid the birds weren't going to visit it. Boy, was I wrong! They absolutely love it! It is not the only birdfeeder that I have, but it certainly is most popular. The smaller birds absolutely adore it. In bad weather, they hop right inside and eat and sit a spell. It has brought much joy to our family. My son thinks everyone sees birds up close and doesn't realize what a gift this is!

For those of us who have never been in a helicopter, I highly recommend this romantic novel about a young woman who is assigned the job of investigating a helicopter flight school. When I sit down to relax with a novel I also want to learn something from it. Having a private helicopter pilot's license, Maryann Davenport is able to relate realistic experiences.

The story revolves around a frustrated young woman whose life changes when she arrives at the helicopter flight school. Romance and suspense follow her as she learns how to deal with relationships and eventually learns to fly the craft herself. I love the author's picturesque descriptions and the light humor conveyed throughout. I hope the author delivers more insight into the unique world of helicopters in future novels. This book was very enjoyable reading.

Excellent Resource for Gardeners Who Love Birds

Review Date: 2005-01-02
This is a very nicely done book. Includes some lovely photographs of gardens and close ups of birds. The information provided is the best part of this book, though. The book starts out by saying that all too often, homeowners hang a pretty painted birdhouse in their yard and sit back and wait for birds to move in. The book then goes on to explain ways to attract birds to your yard that are actually helpful to the health and wellbeing of the birds. The book provides the reader with an understanding of what birds want and need in a habitat.

Lists of recommended plantings, favorite foods by bird species, nest box dimenions by species, and other useful information are included.

I have found myself referring back to this book often as I try each year to make my yard a little more bird friendly - and I've had real success - the number of species that visit my yard have increased with each year.

A great book

Based on my own limited experience, I would assume that all gardeners end up being birdwatchers. When I would be out in our garden working, or just sitting in it and enjoying a cool evening, the songs of the birds always added to the experience, and they more and more attracted my attention.

In this wonderful book, the authors tell you everything you need to make your garden a bird-friendly environment, and as such a bird-magnet. Everything is covered herein, including what flowers to plant, what utilities to add (birdbaths, houses, feeders, etc.), and even notes on how to bird watch, and what birds you are likely to see. This is a great book, one that I highly recommend to all fellow gardeners!
