Parties Books

This volume is a compilation of papers that highlight the transformation of Western leftist parties from romantic revolutionaries to pragmatic realists. This meant that these parties shifted on the political spectrum from the left to the left-center.
The chapters are thorough, descriptive and insightful and even though the different authors offer different writing styles, some studies in this book are attractive and entertaining while other chapters are dull and boring.
Readers will particularly enjoy the story of leftist failure in the US, where post World War II prosperity hindered the evolution of the concept of society. This individualism was emulated in England under Conservative premier Margaret Thatcher in the 80s. Magi became famous for her statement: "There is no society, only individuals," in reference to her rightist party's stance against the social welfare state.
The rightist leadership of England extended for most of the 1980s and 90s until the Conservative Party's several mistakes, coupled with the leftist Labor Party's "reconsideration" of itself leading to its transformation into the New Labor, brought Labor to power. When in power, the leftist English party moved away from leftism and the welfare state toward what it depicted as a "Third Way" style of governorship, which included more liberal economic policies.
But such a shift was not easy in France, where despite the Socialist Party's implementation of rightist economic policies starting the mid 1980s, the socialists could not express out loud their adoption of more center-leftist policies for the fear that their strong communist allies might abandon them.
Meanwhile, in Germany the social democrats endorsed "Third Way" policies and came to power.
In Poland, the disbanded Communist Party transformed itself into a Social Democratic Party and won over the Solidarity Movement, known for its freedom fighting under the communists before 1989. The reason for this leftist victory, the book argues, was the virtual inexistence of the middle-class which traditionally supports rightist parties and their market economy theses.
In Russia, the underdeveloped political culture has been unable to sustain majoritarian politics. Therefore, social democracy failed facing a dominant popular political culture based on a clientele network and favoritism penetrating the state bureaucracy.
The volume ends with a concise conclusion by the book's editor Erwin Hargrove. The book is both entertaining and enlightening for all those interested in political studies and political philosophy.

I heard the author of this book speak at a Mothers of Preschoolers meeting. The book has several ideas on how to organize a party-from to-do lists to games to inexpensive prizes. All children win with these games! This book is overflowing with wonderful party games. The materials necessary for the games are really inexpensive. (Most of the items can be found in your cupboards.) The games are so creative! Many of the games are non-competitive and lots of fun! It is a great way to throw a TRADITIONAL party like we used to have as kids!

With eight designs to crochet, you will have a complete wardrobe when you are done. You can begin with a crocheted long sleeved top and then move on to a skirt. And just to be sure your outfit is complete, crochet a purse to go with it!

There are also instructions for two shrugs, another purse, a shawl and a tank top. Each project has a colored photo and diagrams if they are needed to create the item. Each has a skill listing and most are intermediate while two are listed as easy. This is a booklet for the average crocheter but even those with more experience would find a project that would add just that special touch to her wardrobe.

The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The booklet lays flat or can be folded in half so no weight is needed to keep the booklet open to the right spot. There are two pages of general instructions that include a chart of yarn weight descriptions, skill levels and crochet hook size exchanges between US and Metric.

Grab a hook, some yarn and start making your new Spring wardrobe.

Joen Wolfrom's A GARDEN PARTY OF QUILTS: 7 PIECED PROJECTS FOR FLOWER LOVERS comes from a color expert who shows how to blend flowers into quilt designs, from tulips to clematis and more. Seven flower quilt projects demonstrate the techniques, using flowers which are completely machine pieced and presenting projects for all skills levels. Step-by-step instructions on piecing, patterns, and color illustrations of everything make it easy to understand how the projects are put together.

I love this book from Dorothy Kinsley Wray. The whole thing is hexagon and hexagon with diamond quilts. They work great with my Quilt Patis (tm), temporary plastic foundations. I am told by First Star Publishing that it is NOT out of print. However when a newer book on appliqued flowers with Garden Party as the title came out, many quilt shops dropped this one. I was shocked to see the used price because the publisher's suggested retail price is between $19.95 and $21.95 the last time I checked. I think that is an appropriate value.

Drawing upon their personal research, the authors combine their findings with great insight to elaborate on the role of women in politics. Many different levels and types of political contests are discussed and the emerging role of the Internet and candidate Web sites as a political tool is extremely interesting. A great book for anyone interested in a women's role in our political system and how they are viewed by voters.
