What a lovely calendar from the Audubon Society, that features not only native flowers, but stunning landscape vistas as well. The photography is abundantly illustrious of our great country, with the colorful features of the native flowers set in their native habitats. The layout of the month is easily read with clear numerals and words.

A beautiful calendar -- Audubon does it again! I find their calendars to be consistantly of great print quality, and the photography to be done by some of the field's premier nature photographers. Aubudon calenders are not only beautiful, they are educational as well. They are loaded with interesting information about the fauna or flora depicted on a particular month. As a Horticulturalist, I appreciate the inclusion of the latin names of the plants, as some picture calendars have only common plant names, and some don't even have either. Through their calenders, Audubon transports you to the places they photograph, and it is always a great trip.

I am a masters student studying birds in the urban environment, so this book was just the tool I needed to help me get interested and educated on urban ecology and birds. The authors are leaders in urban ecology, or up and coming. They all write magnificent chapters that outline the need for study, the pertinent questions we should be asking, and even case studies. The bibliographies alone are a wonderful source.

While this book seems designed mostly for researchers, bird clubs and birders would do well to have a copy of this text on their bookshelves. It will provide fascinating insights and ideas for understanding birds in the urban ecosystem and its adjacent areas.

80% of the US population lives in urban or suburban areas. Finding ways to understand the birds closest to people will be a necessary challenge in the coming years if we are to successfuly manage our landscapes for wildlife and get the popular support to do it. This book is the first tome on how to do it.

Very pricey, but worth it if you're a club or wildlife department.

"It is wonderful--so perfect to spark someone's interest and to strengthen interest in wildlife. It is basically done in a very loving way. Often you get books about wildlife that are too scientific for general consumption or just too spiritual/flakey, but this is written on a level that anyone should be able to relate to."

Like all of Gerald's Durrell's books, The Aye-Aye and I will make you laugh cover to cover at the encounters between Durrell's party and the animal and human inhabitants of Madagascar. Since this book was written when Durrell was bringing back animals for the breeding programs he hoped would save them from extinction (in earlier books, he was bringing animals back for zoos), the book also has interesting comments of the state of the environment and economy in Madagascar and its effect on the animal (and human) populations. The aye-aye sounds like an extraordinary animal. I hope he managed to save it.

I like whales really much. I have been studying whales for about 3 years. I am most knowledgible about the the giant creatures of the sea: like the blue whale, the bowhead whale, the right whale, the grey whale, humpback, fin whale, minke whale (all baleen whales), and the rest are toothed whales.

I liked "Baby Whale Rescue" because they saved a whale that was stranded without its mother for a week. I knew JJ from TV News, Seaworld, and from watch his release to the sea.

"It's a Jungle Out There"

This is the book that really peaked my interest in ways to garden that would also benefit wildlife. I purchased this small manual in 1989 and continue to use it as a source of reference. The author, Craig Tufts wrote it while he was a naturalist for the National Wildlife Federation.

The book covers a lot of different material and there are six chapters: MAKING A PLACE FOR WILDLIFE---FEEDING BIRDS---WHO'S WHO AMONG YOUR BACKYARD BIRDS---IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE---MAKING OTHER VISITORS WELCOME and WOOING WILDLIFE WITH WATER, FLOWERS AND SHELTER.

The information provided is just what I was looking for. I've used the easy recipe for making hummingbird nectar for years and I keep four feeders going all summer. A great thrill was seeing seven hummingbirds at one time all hovering for a place at a feeder. You can also learn which plants are best so that you can entice these lovely little birds to your garden. The little "Hummers" are attracted to bright colors and prefer flowers that are tubular in shape such as lobelia and trumpet vine.

Most people are familiar with the marigold plant, but besides being easy to grow, the flowers also provide food for several bird species. This book is also chock full of fascinating information about butterflies, birds, bugs and various other creatures. Oh, one last teaser, you can also learn the identity of the Tomato Bandit, the robber and thief of many gardens.

I did have the opportunity to meet the author when we both attended a butterfly count a few years ago. I had my trusty book with me and he was kind enough to autograph it for me.
