It's the little things about Hodge's life that move the most...Review Date: 2008-01-02
For those of us who complain about bills, romantic disappointments and the state of the government, Hodge reveals the intimate details of life with spinal cord injury. It is a wakeup call. He shows us what it feels like to be dependent on others for the smallest of his human needs. His disability both frightens and horrifies those of us who are secure in our abilities. On the other hand, his determination to rebuild his life after the accident inspires and gives the laziest of us hope.
Having said that, Chum Water is a page-turner. Readable and tender, Hodge shows us the best part of humanity -- and the worst. A man filled with fun and adventure before the accident, Hodge shows us that we are always who we are dispite the misfortunes of life. I highly recommend this book.
Chum WaterReview Date: 2007-09-25
Left with a devastating spinal cord injury after a car accident, Hodge Wood's young life is turned upside-down. In Chum Water, Wood provides a unique, insightful perspective as a patient and later as a health care provider. Reality slaps Wood in the face when he is thrust into a world where caretakers strip him of his self-dignity...as well as his Wellington boots. With determined and courageous effort, Wood brings to light the dedication and tenacity one must have to survive with a broken body and a broken soul.
Wood begins his lifelong recovery facing many obstacles others can only try to imagine. He navigates the health care system and endures strenous therapy sessions to gain back physical strength. When questioned as to what he will do for the rest of his life, he rises to the challenge of being a "disabled" student in a health field dominated by women.
Wood's positive attitude, along with his humor and belief in God, provides him with the needed strength to conquer his fears and tread new waters.
Chum Water, is the first book in Hodge Wood's series, Sharks on Wounded Fish.

"Adventues with Sharks" is amazingReview Date: 2003-09-24
Each chapter is a story about Bird's experiences diving with a particular species of shark, from the sleek and graceful Blue Shark, to the mammoth yet harmless Whale Shark, to the infamous Great White, and many others. There are lots of great facts and details about what science knows, and has yet to learn, about these incredible creatures. I came away from the book with a new appreciation for sharks - in particular their diversity and the adaptations they have evolved to survive in a wide variety of environments and conditions. I also learned about the vulnerability of many shark species to over-fishing and other human practices that threaten their very survival. If you like sharks, want to learn more about them, or just enjoy a good adventure story, then this book is for you!

terrors of the deep! or are they?Review Date: 2004-05-19
All About Sharks is a very informative book. This book will help children understand these creatures of the deep better. I enjoyed looking all the pictures the book had of all types of sharks.
We recommend this book to children ages 5-8. Kids are curious about sea life and this is great book for them to read to learn more about sharks. The book would be a great reas aloud to science classes as well.

quite awesomeReview Date: 2002-10-05
I'm really surprised this book is out of print. It makes me wonder if someone just didn't market it well...Out of hundreds of children's books that we own, it's my daughter's favorite; she makes me read it over and over.
The companion "Mouse's Reality Check" pales a little next to "Fishy Melodrama", but my daughter recognizes that it is a mate and she demands both books now. I wish I could find more "I'm sick of it" series books.

HANG ON FOR A WILD RIDE!!!Review Date: 2005-04-05
It's Julie's turn to get up in front of her class to give her report on what she did on her Summer vacation. She slowly, and with great effort, tries to drag her backpack to the podium, before using a wheelbarrow for assistance. Julie opens the backpack and reveals a massive tome. We are suddenly whisked off to the Atlantic Ocean where Julie and her Grampa are in search of Stephen, the world's largest shark. Julie is one determined young girl and Grampa is a child-like goof-off in a folded paper hat. Along the way they meet a cast of characters that gives new definition to the word `screwball'.
A squirrel and a duck on their way to a rapping competition, ocean monkeys who live in a secret cave and need help opening a jar of peanut butter, modern day pirates, and a pair of cats who want to find Stephen to make cat food out of him...and that's just in the first half of this hilarious book. Their adventures take them from the depths of the ocean to outer space in Gramma's rocket (every Gramma has a rocket, don't you know?) as they blast off to Purple Planet to encounter the fearsome Scientist Monster and to Planet Fiesta where Stephen is celebrating his birthday and wants his "mommy". The journey nears its end at the North Pole as they encounter The Snow Queen, Abominable Snowmen, and a giant whale who eats Gramma's helicopter with Gramma still in it!
A little girl's vivid imagination or did all that really happen? Who cares! This is one wild and rollicking ride! Jef Czekaj has a unique cartooning style that is fresh and as good as anything you'll see in your Sunday funnies. This 128 page, full-color book from is like watching an animated adventure as the panels and the action flow so well. I'm a big comic strip fan and this one truly took me by surprise. One of the best, most imaginative comic strips I've read in a good long time. I can't wait to see more!

Shark Attacks of the Twentieth CenturyReview Date: 2004-08-04
Ralph Collier, one of the foremost White Shark experts in the world, documents each reported shark attack in the last 100 years on the Pacific Coast of the USA in his book "Shark Attacks of the 20th Century."
Anyone who has ever put as much as their little toe in the Pacific Ocean will find this book an interesting read. The victims include swimmers, surfers, divers, dogs and inanimate objects.
I have surfed many of the breaks between San Diego and Humboldt, and found my heart racing whenever a familiar spot was involved in a shark attack.
The book is full of statistics. Some are the location of attack, water and weather conditions, marine life being present or not, but the most impressive fact is the shear courage of the victim and, if involved, the rescuers. The overwhelming percentage of attacks involved the Great White and the fact that anyone could survive a physical confrontation with one of these animals is still hard to imagine.
If at all able, the victims would fight with the shark while in it's jaws using what ever might be handy, an abalone rod, clinched fist or surfboard. Then, they would swim or be helped by a friend to safety. Once they were taken care of medically within days or months they would return to the ocean.
Another interesting statistic is that 38 percent of the shark attacks were at isolated locations. This fact is enough to validate the wary feeling some people get every time they enter the ocean.

Shark Attacks of the Twentieth Century is Awesome!Review Date: 2004-04-01
Collier hooks you from the first page to the last, in this incredible account of Pacific Coast shark attacks. Each attack is seperated into it's own case, with location of attack, quotes from the victim, possible species of shark responsible for the attack, and some cases have photos. An incredible amount of research went into the production of this book and it's easy to see that from the beginning. I couldn't put it down!
Collier also informs the reader of shark biology and physiology, showing us that sharks aren't monsters, but animals supremely adapted to their environment with an insaciable sense of curiousty and highly developed senses. Sharks are dangerous, yet beautiful and deserve our respect.
I guarantee that once you pick up this book you won't be able to put it down. This is the best shark attack book I've ever read, and probably ever will read!
Best Shark Attack Book AvailableReview Date: 2005-10-20
In addition to the detailed attacks descriptions (which are excellent), the book possesses two features which make it stand head and shoulders above all others. First, the location of each attack is precisely indicated on high resolution NOAA charts. This allows you to determine, almost to the exact foot, where each attack took place. Second, the book contains numerous color photographs of attack sites and some very rare pictures of attack victims. For instance there is a photograph of Albert Kogler and Shirley O'Neill on the beach after the attack on Kogler; I have never see this picture before despite reading literally every shark attack book I could find. The attack site photographs are particularly helpful because no amount of description can really explain what a site looks like. Seeing it for yourself brings it to life.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in sharks or shark attacks. I also recommend it to marine biologists and divers who can use the included maps to avoid areas with a track record of shark attacks.

Very InterestingReview Date: 2002-08-06
Not only did they have to face their own problems but those they encountered at River Road School. Matthew had friends back in New York and help with reading, something he missed in Ohio. J.P. just had to get through school without getting into a fight "just for looking different" and "acting strange".
Miss Bass asked the class to read books during the summer, which frightened Matthew. He couldn't read well and needed help with big words. J.P. just needed a friend to understand her awkward looks and strange ways. I liked that they complimented each other. Even Miss Bass admitted to having a few problems of her own growing up. J.P.'s grandmother was one smart cookie because J.P. was always quoting her throughout this book.

Mr. Wood grabs the reader from the very first pages with his unique voice and flair for humor, and masterfully maintains that flow throughout. His plotting and writing skills makes reading his work a pleasure.
The reader can surmise from the back cover and the introductory pages that this book is about an incredibly debilitating accident that renders the author paralyzed, so I expected a heart-wrenching account of the fateful day that ended life as Hodge Wood knew it forever. I wasn't disappointed, but I was surprised. The picture-painting detail and sometimes humorous way that Mr. Wood tackles a very dire and sober subject was completely unexpected, and totally appreciated. The open and honest way that he relays the experience of his ordeal allows the reader to become a part of (and actually feel) everything that he felt and endured. The reader will find themselves terrified during his description of the accident that broke his neck, and completely outraged by the inept and cruel way that he was treated by some of the health care professionals that were sworn to provide him with quality patient care and compassion.
Throughout his ordeal, Mr. Wood lost everything but his faith ... his faith in God and in himself. His story is an incredible tale of strength and perseverance. His passion for life drove him not only to push his battered body beyond its physical limits, but to thrive in his quest for a career, and a fulfilling personal life.
Mr. Wood is a master storyteller and I look very forward to reading his works to follow. I will enthusiastically recommend "Chum Water" to my family and friends.
