Simply written introduction to bats, their characteristics, and their habitats. Text includes one or two sentences in English and Spanish on the left page and a large, color photo of bats on the right page. There is a short photo glossary, bibliography, and index. I love bi-lingual books! Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

GREAT book on Bats!

I don't have a science background but I was looking for a book on bats with more detail than just the basics that all the books I had found up until this point provided. This book is great!!! Its technical yet understandable and it goes to a depth of info that the lay person who just wants to have a greater understanding for bats needs.

To give you an idea of some of the content, the chapters include: evolution and diversity, flight (how the wings work, evolution of flight, demands on the bat), echolocation (how they make the sounds, how they avoid being confused by othre bats, using echolocation for navigation, use of echolocation in finding food), hibernation (facinating!!! how they stay warm, the cost of being in torpor state), reproduction & development (great if you've got a bat house and wonder what's going on in there), roosting behavior, feeding, and the importance of bats/conservation.

I just think this is a great book. I had so many questions about bats - the more I thought about them and wondered about them the more complex they became to me and this book really shed light on my questions. Its terrific. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in going below the surface knowledge of what bats are and what they do and where they fit in the web of life. They'e incredible.

My son and I really enjoyed this book. I really liked both the illustrations and the content. The only thing I did not like, was the reference to "50 million years ago". Otherwise, this is an excellent book on these amazing mammals. Immediately, on the first page even, my son said, "Mom, that picture is beautiful!" I agreed with him.
It dispells many myths about bats, as well as giving facts about them in an interesting way. The maps, diagrams, and definitions, were very helpful as well. Glancing back through the book, there are at least 34 different bats illustrated with their unique names. It definitely held my son's limited "6 year old" attention span. The pictures were engaging and very well done. Highly recommend for personal library, school, or even to do a project or reports on bats.

I really enjoyed this book. My favorite part is when Hattie goes to the old mine and sees all of the bats flying out. It proves that peoples ideas and personalities can change. I would recommend reading it if you have some free time. Overall I would rate this book EXCELLENT!

This book, like Goat Girls has 2 previously published stories:Missing Angel Juan and Baby Be-Bop, both in which are fantastic. Missing Angel Juan is a story about Angel Juan and Witch Baby who fall in love. Baby Be-Bop is just as amazing as Angel Juan but has 3 different parts. It has a really interesting plot with Francesca's amazing writing style. If you want to buy this book, I'd reccomend Dangerous Angels instead because it has all 5 stories, and not just 2 like this one. All the weetzie bat stories rock.

This is an exciting book for your little ones as Grover chases the baseball hit by Big Bird through the pages. I would rate the reading level lower than 4-8 years old, my children loved this book from age 1 to my oldest at 4 1/2 who still loves reading it. The peek-a-boo holes in each page also add interest for the children but the real excitement comes at the end when Grover finally catches the ball. This is definately a good book to add to your child's bookshelf

Bat Masterson, one of the guys and dolls of New York history
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-08
Few think of Bat Masterson as a New Yorker. But he spent 20 years there, rubbing shoulders with Louella Parsons and Damon Runyon and all the other sporting guys and dolls of Manhattan. A sporting man to his last, Bat's sports column for the NEW YORK MORNING TELEGRAPH was a favorite of New Yorkers who followed the fights and the races. Bob DeArment, who wrote the principal general biography of Masterson, is respected by academic and non-academic scholars. You can get lost in this book's stories for hours. You have to overlook the curious production job, with its padded cover and blaring typography, the absence of which would reduce the width of the book on your shelf. But forget that. What a treat this is for lovers of New York City and history.
