Enhanced with both color photographs and drawings, as well as b/w sketches and illustrations, Peter Taylor's Bats Of Southern Africa showcases 78 species of bats native to southern Africa. The reader is provided with clear descriptions and accurate diagnostic features, as well as a wealth of information on the bat's habitat, social and roosting habits, diet, reproduction, echolocation call, distribution, and conservation status. A superb introduction and reference, Bats Of Southern Africa is a welcome and highly recommended addition to wildlife reference collections in general, and the Bat in particular.

The Marching Bat Band parades down the Grand Promenade to the tune of "Stars and Stripes." From two times two to ten times ten, the bats demonstrate multiplication. This book has 385 bats strutting their stuff and is a great follow up to Bat Jamboree by the same author and illustrator. Full of colorful, active illustrations with the right number of bats on each page (to help in counting), this is a wonderful book.

Virus-infected bats are in a laboratory being experimented on. But, after an arguement between a lecherous doctor and his cheated girlfriend, the glass of their tank is broken and they escape into the city.
An excellent story with all the strong characters, genuine suspence, well-thought-out writing and touches of humour that make Guy N.Smith books a must.

Time for Kids - Bats

I purchased this book for my first grade classroom. We do a unit of study on the elements of a non-fiction text. The Time for Kids books are wonderful for this unit. They have terrific pictures (which the kids love), and many elements of a non-fiction text, such as labeling, comparisions, captions, glossary, types of print, etc. I would highly recommend this book - really all of the time for kids books - to those looking for appropriate non-fiction books for a first grade classroom. The level 1 and 2 books are most appropriate.

This book is,quite simply,an extraordinary piece of literary work. George Brennan,Jr. has yet again solidified his reputation as an elite and descriptive character writer. Bats,Brats, and Stats is set on the Upper East Side of Manhattan during the late 70's and early 80's where eight very colorful and,at times, brash friends would embark on establishing a neighborhood stickball team after inspiration from the championship New York Yankees teams of the late 70's. Their physical description would remind you of The Little Rascals in person and then leave you looking like The Bad News Bears after you played them. Their nomadic search for home field advantage will leave you laughing hysterically while thanking yourlucky stars for the maincured fields you took for granted growing up. George Brennan,Jr. has certainly proved that he is one of baseball's great embassadors and his love for the game and the nostalgia of his childhood neighborhood are clearly evident. This book is a winner. It is a classic. It is for boys and girls of all ages. It is not only the best book I have read in 2007,it is the best baseball themed book I have read in my entire life. This is a grand Slam and hitting for the cycle all in one book.

This book without a doubt got me through my childhood crafting years. Random weirdness was no stranger to me, and having grown up outdoors it was natural for me to put my love of random nature and of books to hard work. I'm 18 now and looking for the books of my childhood, the books which I routinely borrowed from the local free library, and this one was the first to come to mind. I remember best making a cockroach out of my dukes of hazzard matchbox car, because it was orange and so was my crayon. Kids deserve a chance to make their own toys. Sometimes all you need is some straws and string to keep them amused.

This book is a wonderful, laughable, brilliantly written tome by a man I have known for over 25 years as an emergency room physician. In between my daughter, the horsewoman (see broken bones), my Dad (see 99 years old alert and cranky) and me (see totally, permanently disabled back/knee), I have seen cures, laughter and a great listener in M. Barry Kirk. His personality (yes, he's called Capt. Kirk in the ER), comes forth in this book - and it's a wonderful read...he is brilliant in so many areas. Those who know him aren't surprised by the brilliance of his writing, but for those who don't - grab this book and curl up to be entertained.

Bringing Bats into Focus! Excellent Overview

This is a fine starter book for kids interested in different animals...Bats: Mammals that Fly is our second encounter with the Animals in Order series. What I like a great deal about this is that it takes time at the beginning of the book to look at (briefly) what makes an animal a bat, not a bird or a mouse (which they sometimes look like), getting into what traits exactly make a bat. The book then goes into the "order" of living things which details the kingdom, phylum and class , order, family and species (with a handy visual chart for reference, great for younger kids, so they can SEE how it works rather than just read it or have it read to them). This is one of the better features of this series. Next in goes specifically into where bats fit into animal kingdom, breaking it down (in words and pictures again) to kingdom (animal), phylum (chordate), class (mammal) and order (bat).
The book also talks a bit about where bats of all types and sizes fit into food chain in North America, South America, Africa and Asia. Bats: Mammals that Fly goes from there into an overview of fourteen species complete with full page, color photographs for each one (our boy loved this best), which were quiet nice. This section includes Family, Common Example, Genus and Species and Size for each bat discussed...from the tiny (1.25 inch to 3 inch) Brown Bats of North America to the larger Fruit Bats of Africa (1.5-12 inches). Each animal is given one full page for written description and one full page color photo...excellent for bringing the animal to life for the readers!
Overall, a fantastic way to introduce various types of bats to your curious young reader! What you get in Bats: Mammals that Fly is an excellent overview of all types of bats, with information that takes the scare out of these nocturnal hunters...our kids even came to appreciate the South American vampire bat and enjoyed the section near the end about how European explorers came home with stories of the bats and they were later incorporated into folklore and legend. Now when we see bats at night, the kids speculate as to which bugs are their favorite and what fruits their cousins all over the globe might enjoy! I was impressed with and pleased to find that at the end of the book the author/publisher also included a short recommended reading list and some really great web pages to do more research on...the kids in particular LOVED this!
Five stars all the way, we had a great time reading this and I hope read more of these very soon! I give it a solid two thumbs up, a great starter resource for young readers!
