Dr. Merlin Tuttle is a real superhero who has used his lifelong love of bats to begin to turn around their undeserved reputation as pests. He gives the rest of us a start in appreciating their value as pollinators of some our favorite foods and in controlling the mosquito population. He taught himself photography in order to potray the worlds' bats in a more positive fashion--the majority of the color close-up bat portrait photos are his. His enthusiasm about what they can do gets us all interested in exploring bats. Though he now has the help of the organization he founded, Bat Conservation International, he has often single-handedly convinced farmers, developers and even the city of Austin to preserve the bat colonies in their domains. Dr. Tuttle has proved that one person can really make a difference.

Good versus Evil in the stylings of William W Johnstone

This is one of my favorite novels by Johnstone. The premise is that a species of killer bats starts attacking an entire town. It is a suspense-filled story, as the heroes are afraid to go outside for fear the bats will get them. Nothing seems to affect the bats, and all hope seems lost. But in the end, one of the townspeople comes up with a plan that makes it all work out in the end.

Interesting presentation of accurate information.

Bats:Creatures of the Night, is an excellent book which presents very accurate information in an entertaining manner. It also adds some good words, such as "creature", to your child's reading vocabulary.

The book points out that bats are not to be feared as they are not dangerous as described by myth; however, the book fails to warn children that bats do carry disease and downed bats should never be picked up. Although some downed bats are fallen young, others may be sick with Rabies.

Teachers/Parents: The danger myths about bats is a good introduction to the topic of myths in general.

A must have for any wildlife rehabilitator. The absolute bible on the subject of care of captive bats. Easy to follow and faultless in content. I have successfully been working from this brilliant book for seven years. From feeding orphaned micro bat species, to diapering a flying fox, to the maintenance of vampires, all bases are covered. Helpful formulas, basic rehabilitation techniques, growth charts, resource lists, and a very accessible author willing to answer questions. Ms. Barnard is a pioneer in her field. I am grateful to her for this extremely useful and much needed book.

A narrowed environmental focus on forest bats
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-03
BATS IN FORESTS: CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT is a pick for any college-level library strong in natural history and conservation issues and offers a narrowed environmental focus on forest bats. Bats in caves are the common focus, but more than half of bat species in North America depend upon and uses forests for roosting, so forest health is essential to bat conservation, and this in-depth coverage of both will prove a key reference for any collection strong in ecology issues in general and bat conservation in particular.

The Best Bats of Florida

Bats of Florida is the book I have been looking for. The general discussion on bats is the best I have ever read. It covers the latest science in a balanced and easily readable style. Much of the information should be useful to anyone interested in bats. The species discussions of the bats found in Florida are the most up to date and complete information available.

An excellent and practical guide.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-01
I have found this book very useful both in the field and in the museum. It represents an excellent feat of practical scholarship by Bonaccorso, with good keys, locality information (with maps), reference to specific museum specimens, and external measurements for all species from PNG, including the provinces in the Bismarcks and northern Solomons. It is not only a terrific synthesis of what is known of bat biology in the country, but also offers a large store of new information. Also extremely handy are the comprehensive gazetteer at the end with lat/long coordinates and the good bibliography. Fiona Reid's excellent color illustrations round out the guide.
