Coffee-Table Book Beautiful !!!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-31
Dr. Kenneth Dodd, zoologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, has authored an amphibian field guide that is so beautifully prepared and interesting to read that its photos and artwork alone make it nearly a "coffee table" volume! But, no doubt about it, this book was clearly written for biologists to enable them to set up and maintain an inventory and monitoring program for Appalachian Mountain amphibians (frogs/salamanders). The need for these monitoring programs stems from the desire to study the reasons behind an inexplicable decline of the world's amphibian population. To help you decide about obtaining a paper copy of this magnificent report, you can get a look at the document by "hopping onto" the internet at http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/c1258_Dodd/index.html.

Review in advance of an actual reading.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-04
MATTHEW WARSCHAUER, the personable author of this book can deliver an invigorated lecture on the history of Martial Law Powers in the US. On July 4, 2007 a lecture he delivered in Hartford, CT was aired on the History channel. I found his delivery so fascinating that I am prompted to immediately add this work to my library.

WARSHAUER delineated the conflicts between idea and polity that have existed when Andrew Jackeon, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and currently George Bush have suspended Constitutional rights in the interests of current threats to National Security. These are issues we have to address as this nation tries to correct the errors of recent history and as we determine our future course regarding personal liberty in the face of an undefined "War on Terror".

If the text reads as well as the author speaks it should make for vivid reading and a
a thought provoking experience. I look forward to it.

This Book is Great!

This was the first one of Peggy Darty's books I read, and I loved it! The main reason I liked it was besides being a very well written Christian romance novel, it was set near, and had scenes in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, my favorite area. The main character, Laurel, is a school teacher, who during her summer vacation tutors a rich girl who is spending her school break at her family's summer home. Laurel subsequently meets and falls in love with her student's brother, despite several obstacles that fall in their way. (Including his annoying mother.) I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone!

If you want a book about the symbolism and mythical 'special abilities' of all animals known to people in medieval england this is it. From the cat and dog to the 'camelopard' and hyena, this book has 2-4 pages and some illustrations for each animal. If only someone would make an encyclopedia of animal symbolism like this for all the animals of the world...!

A Great Collection of Appalachian Writing
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-28
Appalachia Inside Out is a collection of some of the finest writing produced by Appalachian writers about Appalachia. The volume is divided into thematic units such as Roots, Exploration, and Settlement, Heroes and Demigods, and Nature and Progress. The reader will find a find collection of essays, short stories, and poems carefully chosen to present the region accurately and honestly. Together volumes 1 and 2 of this work give scholars and general readers alike a full range of readings about Appalachia. As a graduate student, I found this book a fascinating introduction to the study of Appalachian writers and writing, and as a teacher of Southern Appalachian Literature, I consider this book invaluable. I highly recommend Appalachia Inside Out to anyone wishing to read and learn more about Appalachia.

This packet will be very useful on our journey on the AT. The maps are waterproof and very detailed with shelters, mileage, and altitude. The book itself contains everything we needed to know about each section of the trail and allowed us to choose which sections we deemed most inviting.

Best book of its kind with great pictures of antique baskets
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 37 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-09
If you love making baskets, or just enjoy looking at them or maybe even collecting them, then this book is a must have book. Law and Taylor have put together the definative book on white oak basket making ( as well as some baskets of other materials). For the accomplished basket maker the photographs and illustrations can serve as inspiration as well as pattern. Reading this book will make you want to grab your ax and head for the woods, and if that isn't possible you will want to get to your local basketry material supplier as soon as possible. This is the best book of its kind that I have seen, the perfect blend of art and history.

I am primarily interested in the Gibbs Family History, therefore have a unique position. The archaeology terminology and study methods were not as critical to me, but were understandable.

Many hours of enjoyable reading!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-18
This publication contains 27 chapters of David Hunter's experiences as a former officer of the law. Anyone who has read any of his other publications, definitely should add this book to their collection. He has a unique style of being very candid. His true experiences offer many hours of enjoyable reading. It is a blend of his usual humorous tales as an officer, with a completely different ending that will leave you in tears. I would recommend this book to everyone interested in true crime stories.
