Dr. Brosnan's book is a rigorously researched work that documents the interplay between economics, law and natural resources in the development of the Rocky Mountain front range. The book is not just a thoroughly engrossing history of the growth of the Denver region, but is an excellent study as to the general development of regions that are dependent on the extractive industries. As such, Dr. Brosnan's study is an incredibly important, timely and relevant book.
I am looking forward to Dr. Brosnan's next book.

A good read for people interested in Uranium history. This book would especially interest people in the Four Corners area. Althought this goes into some of the history of U, it is mostly about one man Charlie Steen. This book is not technical.

A well researched history of the Ute Indians and the areas they lived in. Virginia Simmons discusses various stereotypes made by those who first encountered the Utes and sets the record straight. The Utes were an important element in the regional history of Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. I found her descriptions of the adjustments the Utes had to make in various environments most interesting. If you wish to learn about nomadic Indian ways and culture this is an excellent book to read. Well written tribute to a tribe that struggled to survive the onslaught of the whiteman's culture.

Ellen's book gives a historical perspective on the forces that have shaped the rivers of Colorado's front range. I grew up on the Colorado's front-range and would never have suspected the extent of change that these rivers have undergone. She covers the period from the Beaver Men to the present. During a recent fishing vacation back to the area I was able to stand where some of the photos were taken, read the descriptions, and envision the changes for myself. Hopefully, concerned citizens and their elected officials will take her advice throughout the book seriously and protect these valuable resources for the future!

A fascinating book about one of the most dangerous avalanche areas in the U.S.. With plenty of amazing photographs and interesting interviews, the authors provide a look at the incredible beauty of the area, and the awesome destructive force of avalanches in the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado. A great book for anyone interested in experiencing mountain back country, or in the history of how the people of this area have learned to live with these incredible forces of nature.

With this new book Dr. Glenda Russell has achieved what few scholars ever have. She has given us a solid, scholarly and rigorous accounting of her research into the effects of the passage of Colorado's notorious, homophobic Amendment 2 on gay people. In addition, she has given us many completely readable narratives that bring the devastating psychological effects down to individuals deeply harmed by the vote. (Amendment 2 was later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.) If the scholarly research reporting is too much for most of us, the personal accounts are well worth the reading. One wishes that all scholars would report their findings in such friendly ways, ways that all of us can access. A splendid book, both for its careful explication of research methods and results and for its careful discriptions of how anti-gay politics really does very deep and personal damage gay people. Lay readers may not want to read this book from front to back, but it's well worth the paperback price to have it on hand for those parts that are so readable and moving. It is a bonus that Russell writes so well--clearly and concisely, unlike the authors of most academic tomes.

Insight into a little-known aspect of World War II

War North Of 80: The Last German Arctic Weather Station Of World War II is the firsthand account of Wilhelm Dege, leader of the last of the weather stations set up in the farthest reaches of the Arctic during World War II. It was not until well after the death of Hitler and the end of his regime that the Allies sent a ship northward to retrieve Dege and his crew, making their team the last German troops to surrender. War North Of 80 presents a skillfully rendered English translation of Dege's journal, enhanced with appendices on the post-war careers of the men who faced the harsh rigors of the Arctic alongside Dege. A profoundly fascinating insight into a little-known aspect of World War II military history.

This 1899 book was long out of print and the original is now a collectible. This facsimile reprint edition, with a new introduction added, should interest all those who study the War with Spain. In addition to a few introductory chapters on Negro's service from the Revolution to the Civil War, and a chapter each on the other three Black regiments, the book gives most coverage to the Tenth in Cuba. The 9th and 10th flanked the famous 1st Volunteer Cavalry, the "Rough Riders" at San Juan.
The original also has a commendatory introduction by the Cavalry Division commanding officer "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, who had been a Confederate officer in the Civil War. Most of the book is a collection of personal narratives interspersed with interviews with other commanders.
As an aside, Lt. John J. Pershing, later commander of the Punitive Expedition in 1916 and then the AEF in France, got his nickname "Black Jack" from his service with the Tenth.
