Alaska Books

Finally a truthful book about fishing in Alaska. Too often we hear of rivers, bays, and streams that are so thick with fish that you can walk from bank to bank without getting your feet wet. As an August / September visitor to the Wood River System in Dillingham, I experienced the pleasure of catching seven different species of fish ... but mainly the mighty silver salmon on the fly. It was hard work, but each catch was well worth the effort. Ken Marsh has captured the true essence of the Alaskan fishing experience ... hard work, late nights, cold water, bears, eagles and also the experience that so many from the "lower 48" can only wish for.

As I return to Alaska this summer, I will use this volume as a guide to fishing areas, rod weights, and patterns. Ken has hit the pitching with this book ... a must read.

I am not a cook and can't really tell you how good/bad this cookbook is. What I can tell you is that I stayed at Camp Denali and the food was great (although not enough chocolate based desserts IMHO and since it is the northwest, maybe a bit more fresh salmon would've been nice). In skimming through this book, I did recall some of the food that I ate while there. If the book is representative of the food served at Camp Denali then you will probably be happy with the outcome of the recipes. Enjoy!

I thought this book was amazing. I've heard that alot of people are a bit unhappy about him "abandoning" his family, but nonetheless. it is an exciting adventure. If you were going to repeat his journey, this would be a MUST HAVE book. not only does he go into depth about how he did each task, and which tools he used and where they were bought, but he also gives insight and tips into daily activities and tasks that most would consider mundane or embarrassing (see "poopcicle" :-)
I found it to be a great insight into Alaskan wilderness living and survival and thought it was wonderfully written. another book that was hard to put down, and will stay filed in my "keep this book" list, so I can refer to it someday when my dream of doing this is realized.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. The plot is that a dog gets stolen from his owner and is forced to pull sleds that weigh much more with all the items. It is full of emotion and action. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!

A well thought out book. Woody's obvious respect for the land and Native thinking clearly shows through in his writing. Reads as if though the author were talking directly to you ~ nice flow.

Written by a scientist, in the language of a poet, with the illustrations of a professional photographer - remarkably, all the same man. Highly recommended story, history, and life of the caribou and the environment within which it survives.

What a book! This author is a poet, philosopher, storyteller and uspense novelist, who has put together a page turner with suspense, intrigue, quotable lines, fine characters, great plot line, romance, adventure, love, beauty. What more could you ask? Oh yes, it also explores a hot topic without preachiness. I absolutely loved this book and recommend it highly --it has universal appeal.

If you like your murders on ice, try this one on for size: Call girl Carla tries to play house with her idealistic guy in Alaska--and winds up killing him with a pitchfork. Then she suspects a friendly trapper of ulterior motives and kills him, too, as the winter closes in, and wolves lay seige to her cabin--and Carla slips into a deja vu mode of her murderous moments repeating themselves again and again--even as we speak! It'll grab you!

This is a book you would like to read by your fireplace. It is a true story about a family who leaves California to live in Alaska on homestead land, and the trials and tribulations of the harsh winters and the wildlife including Grizzly Bears.
