What sets this book apart from the usual book of beautiful paintings is the text. Every painting is accompanied by a statement from the artist addressing some aspect of the creative process, ranging from why the scene was chosen to difficulties encountered in executing it. In addition there is a statement by a professional naturalist giving interesting natural history information about each location. You would expect a book of paintings to be a pleasure to view, and this one is. But it is also a pleasure to read.

Door County, Wisconsin, combines the natural beauty of bluff-defined shorelines, northern forests, quiet meadows, secluded wetlands, and an astonishing array of wildflowers. This coffee table book features the work of 70 artists who set out to capture the wildplaces of Door County. Most of the paintings were selected by a nationally-known jury. Some invited works are by well-known artists such as Charles Peterson, Karsten and Ellen Topelmann, James Ingwerson, and Gerhard Miller. Paintings represent the artist's impressions of the special wildplaces of the peninsula, and there's not a painting in the book that I wouldn't wish to frame and display in my home. A truly special book for a special place.

An outstanding variety of fantastic work. Any Door County fan will appreciate the true beauty of Door County and the incredible talent of the artists in the area. Charles Peterson, Bridget Austin, Jack Anderson, and other talented artists contributed to this awesome book. Worth double the price and for a great cause...

I have read many books on Cezanne over the past 10 years and in my opinion this is the best. For a combination of well-written text and excellent reproductions of the paintings this book cannot be beat. The text is jargon free. Mr. Rewald was a wonderful writer and he gives you a warm and sympathetic biography of a great artist and complex and difficult man. Cezanne was very neurotic. He had a fear of women and would not use nude models. His famous bather series was worked up from photographs and plaster casts, etc. He could be very anti-social: he sometimes would cross the street to avoid meeting someone he knew. He was very emotional and struggled to keep his emotions under control. This was reflected in his work. His early work was full of violence and shadows and you feel as though he barely was able to keep himself in check as he coated the canvas in a thick impasto. The later, carefully controlled and beautifully harmonized works are the more familiar to the general public. The cover gives you some indication of the beautiful reproductions which are inside this book. This is a great addition and in my opinion a must have for anyone's art library.

Rewald's biography of Cezanne is a very fine piece of work. It is beautifully written with substantial information about the artist & his work. As for all reputable art books, the paper quality is very good to render lovely reproductions of the paintings.
It is very nicely presented & a pleasure to read. . . or just look at the paintings.

I really enjoyed this wonderful book about a wonderfully delightful artist. I would recommend reading it if you are a Cezanne admirer, absolutely a wonderful book!

This is one of the most beautifully done catalogues I have purchased recently. The color and clarity of the reproductions are excellent. The paper used has a dull mat finish which enhances the quality of the reproductions. If you love Cezanne's painting (which I do), then this is a must have addition to your library.

This book is a lovely accompaniment to the Cezanne in Provence exhibit. The narration is beautifully written and describes the beautiful landscapes that Cezanne painted. It provides an interesting chronology of Cezanne's life and works.

Although this is a great book for any art lover it is a must for the plein air (outdoor) painter. It demonstrates how Cezanne transformed his "motif", the scene he has selected, into a painting by showing photos of the motif side by side with his paintings. Machotka, an artist himself, discusses the artistic problems presented by each scene and Cezanne's various solutions as they vary over his development as an artist. Machotka is knowledgeable, thoughtful and writes well. This book will certainly extend your appreciation of Cezanne and if you paint plein air, will likely make you a much more observant and better painter. As a painter this is one of the few books on composition and technique that I recommend to other painters.

Cezanne's influence on Cubism and later abstract styles can make the viewer forget just how important looking at his native landscape was to the painter. This wonderful book helps us see the fascinating ways Cezanne succeeded in "realizing his sensations" in front of nature and landscape. A book to return to again and again.

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read and had. Machotka details Cezanne in a great way. I was never a great fan of Cezanne before purchasing this book, now I'm a devoted fan! Cezanne would be proud to have someone like Machotka writing about his work.

This book at times seems dry because of the descriptions of bureaucracy,government,etc. and at time comes off as being like an encylopedia,although one on a specialty subject,specifically:the reign of Charlemagne.It is a thorough job on his reign and I can see the reason for the subtitle,"Father of a Continent",since Charlemagne put into motion most of the organization and ruling qualities that eventually evolved into a European nation.The first part of the book shows how closely Charlemagne was tied to the institutions inaugurated by the Roman Empire and added Frankish tribal mores into these institutions.While Charlemagne spoke Frankish(a celtic-germanic type dialect) he was also fluent in Latin although he couldn't write it.i was never able to figure out how Charlemagne managed the numerous reforms whether he "micromanaged" of just picked good legislators.At times the reforms seem like they were forces by themselves and Charlemagne was smart enough to flow with the tide.The case could also be made Charlemagne was another "petty tyrant" from which Europe would recover from and rise to the status of today. The stereotype "Dark Age" ruler is too often portrayed as a greasy bearded,wine inbibing,concubine chasing,warlord who every once in a while lets "common folk" into his prescence for an amnesty or to give out presents.Then the ruler rides off into the sunnset with a pack of hounds for the hunt all the while making ribald jest.However this book shows an intelligent,justice seeking,education minded,artistic side to the "Dark Age" ruler.As a matter of fact after reading this book,I don't see how Charlemagne could have possibly had time to squeeze in a concubine as pressed for time as he was.In regard to Charlemagne and the pope,the book says that this relationship was not as close as dramatic accounts have previously said.Instead Charlemagne and his counselours primarily looked to their own interests when it came to political issues and church doctrine,and the author suggests that Charlemagne's reverence for the pope was more due to King Charles magnaminous nature than to fear or superstition of divine wrath.Or maybe with all that barbarian cunning he was smart enough to not "upset the apple(or plum) cart.The book is fine tuned down to showing how Charlemagne's administators dealt with the "Darkage" equivalent of today's "draftdodgers" to the details of how slavery issues were treated.I found it interesting how small livestock animals were back then before steroids and that by 800 pretty much all of Europe was settled and claimed so there was little room for hunters and pillagers to operate "riskfree"without stepping on someone else's toes.This is basically still a"barter" economy,coinage not very marked.This book is not a critical bio,because of the lack of sources from this era to compare Charlemagne to so if you lived before the era of the "critical bio",you pretty much have a cakewalk on your position in history due to a lack of or complete abscence of records beyond some scribblings of monks.While the monk could no doubt do a good critique,there would considerations of keeping a good head on one's shoulders.

Mr. Barbero has produced a comprehensive and insightful work, while keeping the book relatively brief and accessible to those who have only rudimentary knowledge of the early Medieval period. The book is organized thematically, not chronologically, but the author maintains a consistent perspective on events, with the result that the reader does not feel as though he/she is wandering aimlessly in a period of time of more than forty years. Mr. Barbero occassionally references modern scholarly debate, adding to the issues his own viewpoints, which are usually quite convincing.

I have found only two caveats:

(1) The book is fairly breif; it is not an expansive guide to Charlemagne's life.

(2) The author spends a great deal of time on the social history of the period, leaving the king far behind. In this respect it is more a history of the kings reign; it is not strictly biography.

All in all this is a solid piece of scholarship.

Barbero's recent text on Charlemagne is by some called "the most important work on Charlemagne in a generation." While I don't feel qualified to make such an assertion, there can be little doubt in my own mind that Barbero's work is a solid, scholarly, and ultimately, successful addition to the collection of works available on Charlemagne.

I ran across this book in Paris in 2004, right after the book had come out in print. A brief perusal of the pages told me that this would be a book in which I would be interested. This was not only because I was interested in Charlemagne per se, but because I was wishing to study more about the educational reforms and policies Charlemagne initiated during his reign, and the effect those movements had on subsequent history. I was delighted to discover that Barbero's book had much of its text dedicated to Charlemagne's educational reforms, and the volume has served well in learning about this important aspect of Charlemagne's reign.

The book is scholarly in its approach, and there can be little doubt that it will serve as a foundation work for subsequent scholarly investigations on Charlemagne. In addition, the work is translated from the original Italian. These two facts - a scholarly orientation and a work translated from one language into another - tend to make the text a slightly more difficult read than a truly popular history. This is in no way to denigrate either: Barbero's scholarship and authority on the subject is easily established, and the translation is first rate, nearly flawless. Nevertheless, there is a somewhat "elevated" (for lack of a better word) style at work here that can make moving through the volume a bit slower than one would expect. Perhaps this is not bad, because there is so much content present here that reducing the speed can bring about greater rewards. But it is indeed something that the reader should be aware of before diving in.

Ultimately an excellent addition to any medievalist's library (or anyone else wishing to learn more about "The King of the Franks"), Barbero's Charlemagne is worth every penny spent and every minute invested.

Another great collection, this book shares stories from mothers and daughters about the special bond between mothers and daughters. From funny to poignant, this title has just what you're looking for in any mood. Again, the Chicken Soup authors always know how to compile a book that is the perfect blend of amusing, moving, startling, miraculous and all the other goodies that go into a great series of stories.

I am having a hard time getting through this book--it is very hard to read with tears in your eyes. I just bought it, and have only read a few entries, but it is great. I am not a "Chicken soup book" fan. They have over-saturated the market in my opinion. However, this title caught my eye, and was hard to resist. I now plan to order copies for my dear friends for Mother's day gifts.

As always, I delight in reading Chicken Soup for the Soul. I can tell you without reservation, this book, Chicken Soup for the Soul "Celebrating Mothers and Daughters" is truly unique. The stories are from the heart, a genuine bond only a mother and daughter could hold or understand. So tender while tears of elation, sadness and hilarity pour down the cheeks. This is a must read for all mothers and daughters as it hammers hard the love we share. Kudos, Chicken Soup for the Soul...you've done it again!

If you love art deco sculpture, you will love Chiparus. This is one book I actually bought! (i am poor, so most books are borrowed from the library)

If you love art deco, you will love these beautiful figurines. I'm an Erte fan, and these figurines are as energetic and graceful as anything that Erte has done. The book's large format is perfect for the large, full-color photographs with one figurine per page. The only regret you'll have is if you don't buy this book. I came across it at the public library, and I had to have it. It's worth every penny.

I found this book to be an excellent research source for the art of D. H. Chiparus. In addition to accurate and detailed information of his work, included is an interesting, detailed personal history. I especially enjoyed the many photographs of his chryselephantine sculptures - great source guide.

Christian Dior: The Early Years 1947-1957 by Esmeralda de Rethy (daughter of Princess Liliane of Belgium who was one of Christian Dior's very first clients) and fashion historian Jean-Louis Perreau is an incredible, superbly illustrated and informative coffee table book providing a vivid fashion record perfectly capturing the founding of an empire of style in the post-World War II decade. Full-page photographs, some color, some black and white, many nearly half a century old, adorn the pages along with Dior's original sketches and commentary. The text traces the travails, efforts, and world-class achievements in clothing, style, and love of life in this high society treasury. Christian Dior is very highly recommended reading for students of 20th Century fashion history in general, and the influential contributions of Christian Dior in particular.

Christian Dior: The Early Years provides the inside story at the House of Dior, from its introduction of the 'New Look' to 1957, upon Dior's sudden death. When Christian Dior presented his first collection, the young designer presented clothing which featured narrow waists and beautiful evening dresses: a new look for the fashion world of the mid1940s. He drew each dress himself and his designs would change the fashion world of his times. The oversized presentation of this volume allows for fullpage displays of his works accompanying a biography of his life and achievements.

In City of Rains the reader will not find surface inuendos nor the modern liberalism that has made the word "relationship" meaningless and temporary, rather, he will be drawn into the journey of his own soul...in all of its multilayered forms...to see that the seed of love in its purest state yearns to break through the soil of life experiences. I will read it again to nurture that seed in my own soul.

City of Rains is a quiet, gentle read; a truly refreshing work of art. It is a journey that I believe we can all identify with on some level. I hightly recommend this rare find.

I bought this book because I was intrigued with the author's credentials. There is a saying (Russian, I think) that for every language you learn, you earn a new soul. So what to expect of an author who is Canadian, with an apparently East Indian name, who has published translations of old French, and who knows Sanskrit, ancient Greek, and who knows what else?

The result I found was a many-souled story. Literary? Yes, but as accessible as it is lyrical. In parts it reminded me of my favorite passage in "Moby Dick", where Ishmael wanders the night streets of New Bedford. (A good book for a rainy night.) In other parts it brought to mind "Winesburg, Ohio," with characters who are stories.

Overall it is a modern Odyssey, crossing a world of political boundaries, seeking, what? One soul of humanity?

My favorite books are those I could not have written, but would have wanted to. Perhaps because I have been able to master only one language (not for lack of trying), I could never have written this book, but I wish I had.

This is a translated version of the book "Livre de recettes d' un Compagnon du Tour de France". The book is organized in sections according to the type of dough used. At the end of the book the author included the basic recipes for items such creams and batters. That is the only disadvantage of the book - you need to flip back and forth to different sections of the book, and sometimes a single recipe involves 4 sub-recipes in different sections. While this prevents repetition, it does make the book harder to use. The quantities listed usually make 3-4 full-size items (4 loaves, 4 cakes, etc.). Scaling down is not complicated, since all quantities are given in both metric and imperial measurements, but it is hard to figure out how much to prepare of everything if you only want to cook for a family and not for sale. I suggest to make a summary card of the whole recipe you are trying to make... before you break the first egg!. The recipes are very detailed and most items include drawings of the inner layers and a picture of the final product. I have tested about 20 recipes and the results are always impressive, although it always takes 2-3 times longer than I thought. An almond meringue cake with 4 components took a whole day to prepare. Similarly, the Saint-Honoré cake takes a whole day of work. I do recommend this book for people wanting to start a business in cake-making, as well as those like me that cook at home for a single family, but enjoys challenging cooking projects.

The Classic and Contemporary Recipes of Yves Thuries: French Pastry is without a doubt my favorate source for pastries. I am a 1984 graduate of the Culinary Institue of America and I currently own my own restaurant in Grand Lake Colorado. I only wish that Chef Thuries' book hadn't taken so long to become recognized in the states. This book has been long awaited in its translation.

Yves THURIES has put on paper an incredible study of the pastry arts! He has presented an organized, detailed and interesting study . His text is easy to follow and it captures you to move on to the next skill. Every possible detail is explained allowing one to move through the recipes without culinary stress. I have met Yves THURIES and found him to be a genuine master of the culinary arts. I found this book to be a life long reference book on the level of an encyclopaedia. I recommend this book for those that understand that it is not just pastry but it is an art form to be enjoyed and respected. Chef R. Sebastian-Young
