A wonderful portrait of a great American Artist

I was searching for my copy of this book and it appears to have disappear! I used to just have a wonderful feeling just touching the book and have recommended it to a number of people who apreciate art and that of Miss Okeeffe, especially. I find such stories of how the author, Ms. Patten would encourage Miss O'Keeffe to assist her as she made them bread and the pleasure the artist got from doing that simple task. I also found it very interesting the method O'Keeffe developed for her daily walks --- carrying stones in her pockets that helped her know how far she had walked. And the precision with which she requested her simple clothing be laid out! I do think the book was one that show the love the author developed for Miss Okeeffe and that the author also saw how destructive some of the artists so called friends treated her in the last months of her life!

An intelligent look at the subject of radio journalism

This is a brilliant book for professionals and trainees alike, and for anyone who wants to bridge the gap between media history, the theory taught in Media and Communications courses and the real world of radio journalism.

The author (Tim Crook) writes in a clear, accessible style. His subject matter is extremely well researched and is presented in a way which makes the book highly readable.

MODERN ART DESPITE MODERNISM

A superior book and fun to read! In this publication Robert Stoor, Senior Curator of MOMA's Department of Painting and Sculpture, gives an extraordinary account of some carefully chosen examples of the museum's art collection. After viewing the exhibit, I purchased this book primarily because of its stunning assortment of color plates and illustrations. The value of Stoor's commentary, however, becomes quickly apparent. The narrative gives a brief but very revealing insight into most all of the works pictured in the book and adroitly articulates the conflicts, reactions, disparities, and shifting paradigms of modern art - often in conflict with twentieth century modernism. The book walks us through our last century, pausing at all the right places and examining all the right artists. The theme is easy to follow; the book is profoundly instructive.

I had the honor of studying under Dr. Hilberry at Kalamazoo College from '85 to '87. I can tell you this man is the most humble genius I have ever met. His work reflects the genius of the author.

The Moravian Brethren are one of the most notable of the pietistic sects to emerge from the Protestant Reformation. Persecuted during the religious wars of the 17th century, the Brethren left their native Moravia, and later their protected status under Count Zinzendorf of Saxony, in favor of the more tolerant environs of England, Holland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and, in the instance of this work, the settlement of Savannah, Georgia. Mrs. Fries here documents the brief history of the Moravian community in Georgia, commencing with an overview of the sect and continuing through the negotiations between Brethren leader August Spangenburg and Georgia founder General James Oglethorpe, establishment of the Brethren community in Savannah, discussions with the Wesley brothers (founders of the Methodist Church in America), missionary work among the Creeks, and the departure of the Moravians for England, Pennsylvania, and other locations.

The Moravians ultimately vacated Savannah because their pacifist credo prevented them from serving in the colony's defense against a threatened invasion from Spanish Florida. In addition to the author's running account of these developments, genealogists will find numerous references to transfers of land involving the Moravians, settlement maps, passenger lists of Moravian arrivals, a brief list of Moravian deaths in Georgia, and a name index to the persons mentioned in the text.

The Most Beautiful Kite In The World is an enchantingly written story by Andrea Spalding of Jenny, a little girl who makes her own homemade kite. It doesn't seem to fly very well, and at first Jenny is disappointed -- but with a little advice from her father, Jenny learns that her creation has far more potential than she ever dreamed. Beautifully illustrated with the realistic artwork of Leslie Watts, The Most Beautiful Kite In The World is a heartwarming tale and a welcome addition to family, school, and community library picture book collections.
