The Best First Collection of Poems Published This Decade
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1997-05-17
I have never in my life picked up a collection of poems in a bookstore and could not put it down until I had finished reading it, that is until I encountered this book of poems by Sidney Wade. This book is, quite frankly, stunning. Ms. Wade writes with an elegance and grace that gives one goosebumps. Reading this collection, it is hard to ignore that Ms. Wade is an heir to Wallace Stevens. If there is one first book of poems you need to read, it is this one. I predict we will be seeing much more from Sidney Wade in the future

For parents who are fighting the battle of epilepsy with their children, this book lets you know you are not alone. As a mother of a child who has uncontrolled seizures, it is inspiring to read these stories from children.
It is the closest that I can get to know how my child feels when having a seizure.
These children are so brave, and don't let epilepsy get the best of them.
It is a truly inspiring book!

A very interesting and informative book on such an intriguing subject. It really puts this site in a more understandable light which is hard to do when you are dealing with prehistory.

the last phase of O'Neill's creative life
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-06
In comparing the "facts of the plays with the documentary evidence of the historical record, [this work] offers what is really a first study in biography based on knowledge of what in a work are the fact's of [O'Neill's] life and what are not." As psychologically incisive and true-to-life as O'Neill's last plays were, with their richly-drawn, identifiable, flawed, characters, they were particularly susceptible to biographical interpretations and such points of view by critics and even scholars. Among the mixed biographical and literary topics concerning this major American playwright Alexander brings clarity to from poring over material lately uncovered and rereadings of some known material are O'Neill's suicide attempt, his illness of tuberculosis, and his relationship with his parents. Alexander, professor emerita of English at CUNY, gives only passing conjecture on why such "myths" arose in the first place or persisted on the basis of nonexistent, scant, or clearly contradictory evidence. The reasons for such errors or misguided interpretations of O'Neill's late plays--no doubt growing out of an awe and mystique surrounding O'Neill as a deeply impressive, preternaturally gifted playwright--is an absorbing topic on its own--but beyond the interest or scope of Alexander here. The author focuses on how such errors came to be, and on clearing them up. In this, she brings much clarity, and sometimes definitiveness, to mistakenly held views and some outright fictions of both O'Neill's life and his late plays, all without lowering this playwright's stature.

Kathleen Halme breaks into our worlds with amazing ability.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1997-10-18
These poems speak from a place both ours and our parents, and their parents; Mrs. Halme has exploded onto the literary scene with an historical grace unlike any other contemporary poet today. Her lines preform true magic, and allow the present to speak with the past in all its misery, confusion, and brilliance. Combining the fabulous with the tragic, the beautiful and the mysterious, Kathleen Halme makes us aware of our current selves, forces our personal moments into the glory of the communal experience, and allows us to believe in ourselves, and our direction. These poems must endure us, must absolve the broken heart in all of us.

I read the book beginning to end.I found it fascinating to see the heritage and roots of my family. I don't know how interesting someone other than a historian or a descendant of Lt. Fortson would find the book, but I loved reading of their survival in the original colonies.
