Spain Books

This book, one of a number of books by Robert Schwandl about Urban rail transit systems is one I enjoyed reading, and most people who have an interest in subways probably would also. Madrid and Barcelona (both of which I have visited myself) have excellent transit systems that not many people know about. The book describes the history and current operations of all the urban rail systems in Spain, without having tons of (what I consider) tedious text about the truck dimensions, the engine horsepower, etc. The color pictures make you feel almost as if you are on the train itself. Many of Mr. Schwandl's books are in both English and German, but this one happens to be all in English, and very well written, never dull.

This book gives you a detailed guide to all the major roads of Spain and Portugal. If you are planning to drive in Spain or Portugal, it's a great help. The spiral binding makes it easy to fold -- much better than a large paper map. The only disadvantage is that it is heavier than a paper map.

I've only visited Madrid, so I'll forcus my comments on that part of the book. The explanations are short and to the point but manage to cover up all the major sight seeing. The restaurant recoomendations are especially good, and in a country where you don't speak the language, and they don't speak yours, it's nice to find a place that has authentic local food on one hand and an English menu on the other hand...

Anyone visiting Portugal as a tourist will need this guide, far and away the most detailed and informative of available guidebooks. You will need the Michelin red guide (which also covers Spain) for Hotels and Restaurants although a few are mentioned here for each city. Pictures are nice and the format is convenient. Green guides are much improved over the old ones that were too densely printed and hard to read.

I teach Spanish, and I actually have this map laminated and posted in my room for use while I teach and for students to use while planning trips. The Michelin maps are produced by the same folks that publish the Guide Michelin, travel guides that were a mainstay for travel in Europe for years. The map quality is very good, and it is highly detailed. It has a very large national map on one side with detailed smaller maps opposite. Normally, a map this size would be unwieldy, but it is printed on thin but tough paper. I used a similar map while traveling in Germany, and I simply folded it so the area I was in was visible, while the rest of the map folded down flat and easily tucked in the novel I was reading on the train, etc.

A wonderful product; I was a 1st time driver in Spain and terrified; this set of maps made it much easier; but don't drive in Madrid

This is an excellent and highly detailed driving map. My only negative comment is that it is so detailed, a magnifying glass may be needed to read certain roadway areas.

50 years later, this book remains a treasure, a reverential fantasy about the greatest game of all. An oldtimer wandering in the sandlot fades into a dream (this is from memory 50 years later) and is asked to select the all-time, greatest Baseball team. He goes from town to town visiting the players he chooses. Mickey Cochrane, Lou Gerhig, Rogers Hornsby, Pie Traynor, Honus Wagner, Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb are selected, as are Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson and Lefty Grove, but he actually suggests that Willie Mays (who had only 3 years in the bigs) will be on the list and mentions Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige as players who, if they had the chance, would have made the team. His choices are well reasoned - Dickey, Lajoie, Williams, Musial, DiMaggio, Foxx, Sisler, Greenberg, Cy Young, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Charley Gehringer, and others are considered - and, I believe, perfect for the time.

A great book for a youngster to capture the majesty of the game.
