How does one get their child into show business?

How does one get their child into show business? It's not like the Olsen Twins were monuments of talent as infants on Full House. "Kids' Acting for Brain Surgeons" is a complete and comprehensive guide to how to get one's child into the cut throat world of acting - where everyone is out to make a buck, and is not above lying to people to do so. Covering all aspects on how child actors get started, auditions, professionalism, shady agents, and other topics, "Kids' Acting for Brain Surgeons" is highly recommended for community library collections dedicated to cinema and TV.

This exhaustively comprehensive book is intelligent, full of valuable advice and, best of all, has attitude. Isn't that what someone really needs to make it in show biz. As father of an aspiring child actress who eventually made it in New York theater and later on TV commercials, I wish I had had this trade paperback years ago. It sure would have made everything much clearer. The editors start with underlying issues, such as, "Remember when your mom or dad asked you to take out the trash? And while show business, acting and modeling may seem more exciting or glamorous than paper routes or dirty dishes, the fact is that it is still work."

But here is the nitty gritty if your child and you do go ahead: Where to get a work permit, child labor laws, the difference between SAG, AFTRA and AEA, plus some danger signs to look out for and, to keep it interesting, a little gossip about past child stars. I love the list of DO's and DON'Ts ( "DO arrive on set 15-20 minutes earl. If you are on time, you are late." "You should never have to pay anyone to do anything to get your child into the business." and "If it stops being fun for your child, let them stop. It's their life, not yours.") I'm not directly sure quoting 30 plus pages of the California Child Labor Law and various appeal procedures, is necessary, and some of the introductory hype, differentiating the Hollywood OSĀ® Directory from everyone else in the business seems misplaced. In fact, I would have liked a more matter of fact tutorial throughout the first half (and the legal material stuck at the end of the book for reference when needed). But better too much information than not enough.

There were some other very thoughtful features, for example, interviews with former child stars and their parents, as well as with agents and casting directors. These put a human perspective on what is involved. And the list of names and addresses for agents, union locations and charts of pay scales and amount of time per day a child of a certain age can work are invaluable. There are also acting tips, games, telephone numbers, web sites, a glossary of terms, advice on photos (as well as questions to use in screening photographers), sample cover letters, practice commercial snippets and scenes, explanation of the roles of managers and casting directors and even maps of studios. The book details common scams and fearlessly identifies these businesses by name and why they should be avoided. Wow! If your child is considering the possibilities of acting or modeling, this is the one reference book you must have. Use it like you would an encyclopedia. Everything is here that you will need from start to finish of your child's career. Break a leg!

The L.A. Wedding is a beautifully written book. It's a combination how-to and wedding guide to places to get married in Los Angeles. The author's how-to section is up-beat and concise -offering tips that are timeless. Even though the list of sites may be somewhat dated, it is a thorough list and many places are still current. The world needs more talented writers like Ms. Amegah!

A dictionary for today's modern world

This is an excellent, versatile dictionary covering both Brazilian and European usage and spelling. It is very useful for the traveler in Portuguese speaking countries and communities. The dimensions are right, for a good size pocket or your suitcase. Entries are what you need. Translations are practical, to the point. I have always found the word I was looking for. In approach and coverage it will have a good partner in Manuela Cook's Teach Yourself Portuguese 2002 course. They both address the needs of today's modern world. An excellent buy!

This book is incredible! im a 3rd year law student at Vanderbuilt University. I purchased this book to help me out with a research paper and i was able to just flip through the categorized pages to find exactly what i was looking for. I wasted no time, just went to the site i knew would have the exact information i needed. It is so easy to carry around with you, and its a lot easier than having to click on a hundred links. I definetly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't want to waste time and wants to do their research quick and easy!

Although I had solely purchased this book for a college course, I can honestly say it is one book I will not be reselling. The amount of helpful sites located within the book have saved me countless hours on the Internet. Any educator would benefit from the 70+ pages of websites it offers. For the money, this was a [deal]!

Let's Go Sociology is a guide to internet sites of interest to sociologists and sociology students. It is, in fact, a great starting place for anyone just beginning to browse the web. Whether locating census data or finding out about careers in sociology, this book can guide anyone through the maze that is the internet. Let's hope the authors write more Let's Go books for other topics of interest to web wanderers. Even the price is great

If you're going to invest several hundred dollars in a resource of this magnitude, you are serious about what you're doing. I know I am. Here's a hint: instead of buying these heavy volumes, go instead to literarymarketplace.com and subscribe to the electronic version. The cost is comparable, but with the online version you can instantly make custom databases of the contacts that matter most to you. I ran a search on "book reviewers" in the online version, and inside of an hour I had a database of over 350 book reviewers to instantly merge into form letters in MS Word. Viola! Imagine how long that would take to key in. Yikes. Also, you know that everything is updated regularly. Give them a call and convince them and ask for a free trial.

Excellent Reference! -- (but not the only reference)

The LMP seems to contain by and far the most complete and organized lists of book (and other media) publishers. If you're serious about publishing just about any type of work, the LMP is a very good place to start. I learned about the LMP via a book by Rudy Shur titled "How To Publish Your Nonfiction Book" in which he describes how to use the LMP to obtain your list of potential publishers in conjunction with other references, including the Writer's Market. While the LMP contains thousands of publishers, cross-referencing them in the Writer's Market and other sources is the way to go. Also, I must admit that I don't own the LMP, but rather go to my local library to use this reference book.

Original published in 1856 as the first general reference available on the subject of American riverboats, this superbly reprinted edition from Land Yacht Press of Lloyd's Steamboat Directory And Disasters On The Western Waters features a new introduction by Gregory G. Poole and is a wonderful contribution to the history of American steamboating. Highly recommended, long out of print, Lloyd's Steamboat Directory And Disasters On The Western Waters will prove invaluable to students of steamboating, American river travel, and histories of the American frontier.

Best Part of American History

The best part of American history, as far as I'm concerned, is the history of paddlewheel steamboats. We knew that many of them sunk, but this book tells you HOW they sunk, and where. If you're a steamboat lover, this book will fill in the gaps for you. It has about 100 illustrations of steamboat disasters and maps, an index of boats, and an informative introduction to the new edition. Highly recommended supplement to the steamboat bible: Fred Way's Packet Directory.

THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THIS: Most of the numbers I've dialed have AN ACTUAL PERSON answering the phone at the other end!

The author is obviously as annoyed as the rest of us by electronic prompts guiding us tediously through a matrix of services we don't need.

Great stuff. Now write one for Manhattan and make me really happy.

Topics and numbers, that's what I want, and someone on the line who can help. Great stuff. Now just give me one for Manhattan.

The Complete Guide to the Hollywood High.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-06
Since the beginning of movie making, film makers have tried to mirror society. The counterculture has always been a favorite sticky issue, including marijuana use. As early as the 1920's, the "loco weed" has made many cameo appearances and a few starring roles. From it's early days of scare tactics in the now famous cult favorite "Reefer Madness", to the late 70's marijuana heroes, Cheech and Chong in "Up In Smoke", grass has come full circle. Although it is said that millions light up every day, Tinsletown has had a difficult time dealing with the use of marijuana on the silver screen. Nowadays, the majority of films that feature marijuana are somewhat neutral in their portrayal of this "illicit activity" and by now, many major actors and actresses have turned on! In this book, you will find over 500 movies from the past 60 years that feature references to marijuana. Whether it's a full blown pot film like, "Half Baked" or "Dazed and Confused" to a quick shot of a bong on a table or a joint in a drawer, you'll find all of marijuana's movie roles in this, The Complete Guide to the Hollywood High. Buy It!
