Fabulous Choice of Shows

Review Date: 2004-05-18
I was planning our vacation to Los Angeles when my husband suggested we attend a taping of a TV show. I didn't know where to start looking for information so I went to the main library and asked if they had any books on attending TV shows in LA. I was surprised when they showed me "Appearing on TV Shows for Fun, Fame & Fortune" by Lee Ellis. It is a terrific resource. It lists over two hundred shows to be in the audience or as a contestant. We choose to the game show "The Price is Right." The book gives the ticket info and the way contestants are choosen. We got our tickets by e-mail and we were off to LA. When we got to the studio everything went smoothly and we were interviewed to be contestants. But,our luck was not to be, we did not hear our names announced to "come on down" as contestants. Even though we didn't get to be contestants it was a great experience. If any of you want to be on a game show or any TV taping, I sugguest you get this book. It helped me alot.

Lee Ellis' Appearing On Tv Shows For Fun, Fame & Fortune: A Guide For Audiences, Contestants & Guests is a very practical guide to entering game shows such as Family Feud and The Price is Right; talk shows such as The Jerry Springer Show or Politically Incorrect; PBS shows such as The Antiques Roadshow; Court TV such as Judge Judy or Reality TV Shows such as Big Brother and Survivor; or being in the audience of popular sitcoms such as Titus and King of Queens. Each of the many individual shows presented has about a two-page writeup, with ticket information, studio information, and clear instructions for becoming part of the show. Highly recommended for anyone with a serious interest in joining a television show audience, especially if the purpose is becoming a contestant!

the outstanding architectural reference guide for the topic....is now updated in the new 2000 edition to cover a wider region with many new examples. format is succinct and easy to use and the elegant graphics provocatively demonstrate the breadth of work accomplished in the southern california region from the early 20th century to today.

The best book for architects and designers visiting LA

What makes this book a great book is its structure and its size. It's small and light enough to be carried everywhere. It's well done, because you have maps, with the buildings marked with numbers and index of the architects, with the names of the buildings referring to the same numbers of the maps. Then you have three different colours, meaning: black open to the public, blue visible by appointment and red private. It makes you going around in LA easier!

A cogent guide to NYC's best buildings
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-02
Bartolucci divides Manhattan into sections suitable for short walks, and guides the reader to view buildings on every tourist's list (Empire State, Chrysler, Rockefeller Center) as well as less well known buildings (Paramount Hotel, Lipstick Building, Delmonico's, Flatiron Building). Well drawn maps guide you to private interior spaces as well as public parks and buildings of note. She includes discussion of the architects and the original owners, and often includes her personal opinion of the design.

The book is lightweight and compact -- easy to hide in your messenger bag so you don't have to look like a tourist. Almost all the book is about Manhattan, though, so don't expect to find much in the outer boroughs.

Definitely a good book to have if you want to spend some time "wandering intelligently" through Manhattan.

A must for a tourist in New-York

I lost this book on my last day in New-York. Having enjoyed it so much, I took the trouble to return to the shop where I first bought it, and bought it again.

This guide added a huge quality to my visit in New-York. It is very well organised and it is not heavy. It highlights many special places that I would not have known them from another guide.

The economy is booming and opportunities are jumping but how does one makes the proper career move ! In this new AESC 2000 Membership Directory, the perplexed candidate will find some of the keys to the executive suite. Some great articles on Leadership but also more importantly addresses and references by specialties for the major "headhunters". Will this get you the CEO job you covet? not necessarily- but al least you will know how to respond to that recruiter phone call and to whom to write to when you become impatient. The cost is equal to a cheap dinner for two and you are definitely worth that investment. Good luck and Good Hunting!

I found this dictionary very helpful in elucidating auditing terminology, and explaining the background to audit concepts. Complex ideas are often distilled into a few, clear paragraphs. Perhaps an additional diskette would have been useful to aid key word searches?
But overall this is a very good guide to the language of audit. Recommend.

Valuable tool.

As an auditor, I found this dictionary to be a valuable tool: at last, in one volume, there is a comprehensive guide to auditing terminology. It is a relief to no longer have to plod through accounting dictionaries to find auditing terms. Guidance for further reading within the auditing literature is another plus.

Jim Kaplan's The Auditor's Guide to Internet Resources, 2nd Edition

By: Ron Keister Date: 6-15-00

The Auditor's Guide to Internet Resources, 2nd Edition has a lot of very useful information for auditors interested in using the Internet as an audit tool. In fact, there is good information for anyone interested in using the Internet. While the whole book is useful, for auditors the most interesting and immediately useful areas include:

A. The Internet Literacy Checklist B. The Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool C. Information on how auditors can use the Internet D Internet Search strategies and evaluating search results E. Guidelines and techniques for auditors to evaluate Internet information and data

The Internet Literacy Checklist and Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool will help auditors understand their Internet strengths and areas that could use improvement. Audit Directors and Managers can use these to help identify audit staff training needs, as well as help them assess their reliance on auditors' use of Internet information. The effective use of these can help improve the quality and quantity of audit work.

The Internet audit use areas presented in this book are some things that all audit organizations should seriously consider. I fear too many are not making high-quality use of the Internet, resulting in less economical and valuable audits. With the usual limited resources, audit organizations must focus their efforts on key organizational issues in an efficient and effective manner.

Knowing how to identify and find the "right" audit information via the Internet in a well-organized and successful way is essential. This book provides excellent techniques and ideas for how to achieve this. First, it provides a good method for identifying what information should be searched for. Then it provides excellent Internet search techniques and ideas. Last, it provides a first-rate way to assess the adequacy and validity of the Internet information obtained.

If the above were the only things in this book, it is worth the price. But no, there are other interesting areas including:

A. The list of available Internet features and how to understand and use them B. Good information on audit discussion groups, tips on use, and a thorough list C. Excellent "real-life" examples of how auditors have used the Internet D. A great list of technical data that can help reduce the dreaded call to "support" and the wait on them to "fix it" E. Last, but not least, is the details or inside Internet information that help you understand the Internet, how it works, and it's good and not so good features.

Reviewer Background: Mr. Keister has a bachelor and master degrees in Accounting; is a CIA and CPA; and has more than 25 years auditing experience, the last 20 in internal auditing in both large and small organizations, private industry and higher education. He has been using computers since about 1982 and the Internet since 1995, but is not an IT auditor.

This book lists over 8000 B-17's by Nose Art Name, Bomb Group, Squadron, Serial number, and if the auther has a photograph of the aircraft. Not all information is availible on all aircraft but this is a remarkable amount of information.

For my purposes, the book is phenomenal. I often need to know the accompanying Bomb Groups and Squadrons for a given B-17 so that I may paint the nose art on A-2 jackets. As the description states, it does list the Nose Art names with the associated Bomb Groups and Squadrons if available. It does also list the serial numbers for the B-17s and if there is a known picture in existence. THERE ARE VERY FEW PICTURES IN THIS BOOK, IT IS BASICALLY A LONG LIST OF NAMES AND SERIAL NUMBERS. IF PICTURES IS WHAT YOU WANT, GET "VINTAGE AIRCRAFT NOSE ART" by Gary M Valant AS THAT HAS NEARLY 1000 PICTURES OF DIFFERENT NOSE ART SAMPLES. Incredible amount of information packed into this book. if you're a true WWII buff, get this when you can as it seems to go in and out of print and sometimes is hard to get.

For my purposes, the book is phenomenal. I often need to know the accompanying Bomb Groups and Squadrons for a given B-24 so that I may paint the nose art on A-2 jackets. As the description states, it does list the Nose Art names with the associated Bomb Groups and Squadrons if available. It does also list the serial numbers for the B-24s and if there is a known picture in existence. I also like that Forman listed the B-24s alphabetically, but also went a step further and listed them by Bombardment group as well which makes it very easy to reference the bombers.

A must for B-24 Buffs! Wally has expanded his format to include data on AF Wings and their component bomb groups for most of the USAAF. His B17 Nose Art Directory was concerned with the 8th, 15th, and 20th AFs. And rather than searching the total list for group aircraft he has listed the a/c assigned to each group by group number. Definitely a source book for important data (names, serial numbers, photo availability) on this aircraft.

As is typical of his work, Don O'Briant has filled his latest book with humor, insight, creativity and accurate information. He's a well-known Atlanta journalist and has a reporter's discerning eye. But he's also a philosopher and a warm and sympathetic observer of the human condition. Gratefully, his restaurant reviews aren't like other people's. You feel like you're really there and can experience for yourself the people, smells and sights he describes. The inclusion of comments by notable Southernors is an original and effective device. You can tell that he is a down-to-earth (but incredibly observant) person who genuinely likes the places he went and the people he met. And, best of all, he's a great judge of food. Zagat, take notice! I recommend the book highly.

What a delight!

I have used this book extensively in my travels throughout the South. In fact, I have planned some of my trips so that I can sample the delicious food found at the country cafes recommended by the author. My only complaint would be that the author has not come forth with a second book; I have some nominees for him!

Found out about the book - People to People, Poland - by accident. Before we left England on a tramp steamer I phoned a fellow mentioned in the book from Gdansk who offered such hospitality to my self and my friend. We were accepted as guests by his family for two days. Without the book we wouldn't have met some splendid people and wouldn't have had our eyes opened to their warmth and generosity. This experience has been repeated time and again.

An excellent way to write to and learn about real people.

I knew I would be going to Lithuania for a dance festival that occurs every 4 years. This was the first time (in 1994) since the country was returned to freedom from behind the Iron Curtain. It was also the first time my mother returned after 50 years! I picked a few people from different cities based on a few characteristics listed in the book: age, what they like to do, and how much Enlish they knew (my Lithuania is quite basic). My longest pen-pal, now friend, have been corresponding for years. She invited me to stay in her empty flat for all three weeks! She even met us at the airport when we arrived with an armload of flowers - a big tradition in the eastern bloc countries. She showed us many places, we met with her family, we went to her beach house on the opposite side of the country. I visited other people I met in the book in other towns. One person gave me ideas of places to go, another I met in the town where my mother grew up. My mother and I met up with some relatives of ours in other towns, went driving to many smaller places and really learned a lot about how life has changed since the forties, and since the Soviets were driven out. I picked people who from their 20s to their 40s. One was an artist, one a translator, a student, a newspaper writer, a homemaker, and a teacher. Two did not write back, but I made many friends a learned a lot about the people of Lithuania and how they lived. To me, that is more important than sitting in a hotel room, or taking a bus tour; it is the people who make up a country. This book provides a way for People to meet People. I highly recommend it, or others in this series. Poland is next for me.
