Good book for charities and municipalities!!!

...

I have a friend who started a shelter for women. With this book, she got a grant for $50,000. And yes, she even lives in a "capitalistic society". She got another grant to buy a van.

If you're running a charity, this book is a definite must. Also a must if you are in any kind of public office such as a mayor or county commisioner, etc., because there are all kinds of programs listed for towns, rual areas, etc., etc.,

There's stuff for individuals too. THere are things kids can write away for for free. There's even an adress where you can write to to buy flags that have flow over the U.S. Capital. Wouldn't that make a nice gift for your local V.F.W. or V.A.?

So again, if you just want to buy the book so you can write away for a million dollars, this isn't for you...

BUT...if you are involved with any kind of charity, or maybe want to suggest a grant to local city councilmen, etc. BUY THIS BOOK!!! I have definately seen it work!

A thoroughly 'user friendly' guidebook for justifying, designs, and implementing a school garden
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2009-02-08
Gardening has long been utilized to introduce children (especially city kids) to such educational issues as the environment, the value of fruits and vegetables in a health diet, and the growth cycles of plants. The collaborative work of Bonnie Mackey (an elementary school teacher for 13 years and a now college professor teaching courses in emergent literacy, reading instructional strategies, developmental assessments, and community programs) and Jennifer Mackey Stewart (a freelance writer and instructor with the Texas' Round Rock Independent School District Community Education Program), "A Librarian's Guide to Cultivating An Elementary School Garden" is a thoroughly 'user friendly' guidebook for justifying, designs, and implementing a school garden for the express purpose of improving children's academic performances overall. Of special note are Mackey and Stewart's highlighting of the five most common gardening habitats (wetlands, urban, vegetable, wildscape, butterfly) in substantial detail. An ideal reference and resource for classroom teachers and school librarians, "A Librarian's Guide to Cultivating An Elementary School Garden" is also of significant value for home schooling parents by providing useful information on funding sources, guidance on designing and maintaining a garden, as well as offering a bibliography of related books, specific instructional activities, and 'webliographies'.

Deftly edited Barbara Quint (Editor, Searcher Magazine), The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide: Strategies for the High-Tech Reference Desk by Irene E. McDermott (Reference Librarian and Systems Manager, San Marino Public Library, California) is a useful and "user-friendly" instructional guide, especially written for librarians concerned with how they can get the most out of computer search engines, how to find people and public records with a minimum of fuss, tracking down both current and dated news, cyber-shopping, web-based email, creating web pages, computer troubleshooting, and much, much more. Although written and especially recommended for the unique needs and problems of a librarian, this very practical primer can also come in quite handy for any lay user still adjusting to the onset of the information age and what school and community libraries can offer them.

Being an EMT and working with Law Enforcment and a licence plate enthusists, this book provide me with the ability to look up a plate to help out the local PD and also the fun of reading threw the book for my own personal intrest. It provides infrormation for Emergency Service Personel, the begining licence plate collector and the experenced. It provides you with the addresses of state DMVs where you can write to request sample plates. I would recomend this book for anyone with an intrest in licence plates. Also, no police department should be with out this book, espically one that is a big tourist city and gets alot of out of state cars and plates!

Critical acclaim for LIES THAT TELL THE TRUTH

Review Date: 2001-03-07
Dr. Pinkard has been a psychotherapist and teacher for all of her professional life and she has been gifted with a keen ear for words. A psychotherapist is a trained listener and a teacher is one who uses words to transmit ideas. One of the most moving and meaningful uses of words is in metaphor. This book is a study and explication of the concept of metaphor (the lie that tells the truth). Demonstrating her own love for language, Dr. Pinkard has also, over the years, collected marvelous examples of metaphors, which in this work she has shared as representative examples of the type of metaphor being discussed. I found the section on "Metaphors of the Spirit" to be particularly moving.

The student of language and words will have a delightful time with this book since not only will it expand the repertoire of linguistic usage by the explanation and exploration of metaphor and its various permutations, but also offers the reader the opportunity to bask in the warm pleasure of the well-turned phrase from Diderot to Charles Schultz.

Dr Pinkard's style is both intelligent and accessible. This is the gift of the exemplary teacher-to be able to take abstract concepts and make them available in a way that educates, touches, and inspires. Lies that Tell the Truth does just that and I heartily recommend it.

The Life Of The Cave
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-29
This book is a part of the World Book Encyclopedia's series: Our Living World Of Nature. As with all World Book Encyclopedia publications, the quality is excellent.

The authors, Mohr and Poulson, are well-know cave biologists, and this 232 page book covers the wide variety of life found in caves. The photographs are mostly in color and they are incredible! Since this book was intended for non-scientists and non-cavers, it is written with an introduction to how caves are formed and how they are explored. The book limits itself to caves and cave life of the United States. By staying within this scope, they have been able to present an excellent introduction to the subject.

A wide variety of cave life is covered, including mammals (bats and rats), reptiles (snakes and turtles), insects (too numerous to list here), fish, crustaceans (crayfish and shrimp and others), and salamanders. Some of these animals live only in caves (the troglobites), some spend part of their time in caves (the trogloxenes), and some are just occacionally found in caves (the troglophiles).

This is a great book and all nature-lovers will enjoy it.
