24 Hours In Cyberspace is truly the first book out of the publishing launch pad to capture the essence of 22nd Century human evolution in the emerging global electronic communication network, known as "Cyberspace".
Kudos to the intrepid photojournalists, armed with their digital cameras, that found real subjects, then sent their scanned images back around the world to "Mission Control" to be collated into an instant book. The time capsule concept is definitely not new--but the cyber-method of manufacturing is what makes it an incredible milestone package.

This is the first book I did purchase thru Amazon. And, I must confess, this book is the perfect selection to anyone interested in "feeling" what the web means today all over the world. It's indeed extraordinary, too, that all the wonderful pictures that are included in it were taken IN THE VERY SAME DAY in a period of just 24 hours. Moreover, that day the pics were being published almost in real time in the special web site for the project. The book quality is coffe-table-like. And the CD companion is just a perfect match. I do deeply recommend it.

If you already have a good www browser like
Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer, don't follow
the instructions for installing the CDROM. It
does a lousy job of searching for existing versions of Netscape. It overrode my newer
version and installed version 2.
Just point your existing browser at the cdrom
and start reading it.
Other than this, it's great!

The photos in this book are gorgeous. There's some sublime shots of stalagmite/stalagtite formations in the Devil's Womb, and a stunning two page montage of an iron ore skein in Deep Green Cave. There's also photos of the wildlife you get in the caves - bats, crabs and blind moles, and a couple of cracking shots of some chutney ferrets down in the darkest recesses of Kak Canyon. I *love* this book.

In Colorado Caves: Hidden Worlds Beneath The Peaks, Richard Rhinehart examines the exploration, history, science, and conservation of Colorado's fabulous caves. The informative and engaging text is profusely illustrated with the outstanding color photography of David Harris, and includes some b/w historical photographs as well. Well suited for the tourist or spelunker, there are listings of Colorado caves that can be visited by the general public. Whether an armchair traveler or a dedicated cave exploration enthusiast, Colorado Caves is very highly recommended reading!

DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND is a lap-heavy, huge tome of the creative photographs of Nan Goldin, many of which have never before been published. Goldin is know throughout the museums of the world as a photographer who knows no barriers for her subject matter: AIDS victims, mental patients, transvestites, poor families, rural landscapes, constructed still lifes - these are but a few of the categories studied and captured by Goldin. For this full color volume Goldin selected the layout and the progression of sections, making the flow of the book even more fascinating; the book is one where she is both artist and curator and the result is a powerhouse of statement.
For devotees of Nan Goldin's work, this book is a must. And for viewers marginally approaching photography as an art form then look no further. A magnum opus of the work of one of America's more significant contemporary artists.

About caving in the Guadalupe Mountains in the 1930's

If you're a caver or just interested in caving, this book is a lot of fun. The Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico are home to some of the world's most beautiful caves, including Carlsbad Caverns and Lechuguilla Cave. This book describes Robert Nymeyer's adventures and misadventures with his buddies in the high Guadalupe caves. The descriptions of early vertical caving techniques using lariats and the photographs taken with flash powder are priceless examples of what folks will do when bitten by the exploration bug.

This is a collection of beautiful photographs of mostly unbeautiful people and places. This is a great challenge and he meets it well. The more I look at this book, the more unfolds for me. These are dense, graceful photos from around the world. He uses cross processing, black and white and simple color with the eye of a real master. There are a collection of short stories which I have not read yet, but anything with Nick Cave in it, gets my money. For a first book, this is a keeper.

Photographer Raymond Klass has done an outstanding job of capturing the beauty of Mammoth Cave National Park both inside the cave and out.
It is the best photo book ever published on the park.
The reproduction of the over 100 color photographs is outstanding.
If you have ever been to Mammoth Cave or are thinking about visiting the park, this book is a must.

Photographer Peter Milne went on the road with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who allowed him to take pictures of the tour.
These wonderful black and white shots are most candid, many catching band members unaware, or, at best, unwilling, making for some amazing images.
A bonus is the forward written by Nick Cave, who expresses his feelings about the photographer in his own interminable way, making this alone worth purchase.
Brilliant!

The Shadow Hunters offers a glimpse at a world most of us don't know exists. Through haunting photos and text, it depicts the gathering of bird's nests from 400-foot perches in the caves of Western Thailand. These are the nests that are so highly prized in China for soup. The most expensive of these, made entirely of swiftlet saliva, contain an immune-boosting protein called mitogen. I was gratified to learn that the men who harvest the nests are seldom injured despite the obvious hazards involved in climbing bamboo poles to such heights. Sadly, the prospects for the swiftlets seem less safe: if nothing is done to regulate the nest gathering and destruction in nearby forests, the marvelous little swiftlets may well become extinct.
