Touring Books

The author takes us on two journeys, forty years apart. In 1942, an inexperienced DuBois ran the Middle Fork of the Salmon River becoming the first person to run the river solo. If you have experienced this most challenging and beloved of America's rivers and wonder what it was like in earlier days, this book is a must. Filled with history and whitewater excitement and thrills, the author speaks with passion comparing his two trips and the regulation of the river today.

Good route descriptions for the touring cyclist. The routes are a bit short and unchallenging for the expereinced cyclist or the cyclist seeking challenging training terrain. This is a good guide, and I have not found anything better. Recommend.

The author has gone on worldwide bicycle tours and used a bike exclusively for 4 1/2 years for transportation. He tells you how to prepare for every possible scenario on the road and in the city, bike maintenance, styles, safety, etc. He has experienced all the pitfalls and shares with you all the solutions. The only thing that's not perfect is that it was written in 1983, so it's not as up-to-date as it could be. But otherwise EXCELLENT!

We used this map in Portugal but it is not like the US roads. They don't post numbers. You just watch the signs that say the town/city/place you want to go. But yes it was helpful. Crazy but an adventure.

This book, while a little long-in-the-tooth in terms of today's paddling conditions, does offer a good volume of information about North GA rivers. I found it especially helpful in terms of how to get to the rivers highlighted. The maps are pathetic, but careful attention to the driving instructions usually leads you to (more or less) where you need to be. If you are new to Georgia, or new to paddling (like I was) this will be a good starting point for your exploration of North Georgia mountain streams.
Expect some trial and error here. Some recommendations (like Cooper Creek) are almost amusing in their lack of accuracy. I did eventually find Cooper Creek (an upcoming "star" of whitewater adventure) but my only enjoyment was being able to drive my car through a river - like you see in commercials. There was literally about 3 inches of slowly trickling water there. On the other hand the Cartecay and Chestatee rivers were great. If you need a good starting point, this book will do.

This is a very comprehensive resource for bike touring and all road biking in general. Although some of the material is a little out of date now (2006), it's still a very helpful book because of its thoroughness and the author's insights about touring. I found it very helpful in planning and excecuting my first self-contained tours.

This small book is a perfect size for tucking into one of your bike's bags and bringing along with you, so you have all the information with you as you go. The maps are reasonably well done and will complement your GPS in helping you find your way. The maps add in extra information such as local bike shops, rental spots, and the all important food and bathroom.

There is good background information on each area, although I would have liked color photos of the areas to help choose from the options.

It's nice to be able to scan the list, look at the mileage, the terrain and the views and figure out which route is perfect for a given day. Plus, with this area being so compact, it's perfect for going on a week long trip, hopping out on a different route each day.

This book serves the road bicyclist with an interest in recreational riding, regional history and natural features of Wisconsin. The 30-some tours described are evenly distributed over the state, and each is no more than about 30 miles in length.

If you like biking, rustic roads, local history and small-town cafes, you will appreciate this book. This book reminds me of the "Touring the Backroads" books for motorists designed for appreciating history at a small-town, local level. However, the focus is primarily on good cycling routes. Introductory notes by the author indicate that Wisconsin cycling clubs contributed their favorite routes to this work--a credit to the author's trust in real experience.

Features you'll appreciate: (1) template-style presentation of routes--safety, difficulty, length, time required, highlights, route diagram, route cue sheet, narrative profile, etc.; (2) discusses suitability of rides with respect to children or older adults; (3) tips on rest stops and food; (4) physical size of book makes it easy to carry while you ride.

If want to extend or shorten a described route, you'll have to do it on your own. For the most part, the route descriptions don't suggest variations. Look for maps published by the Bicycling Federation of Wisconsin or a bicycling club in the region, if you need to tailor a route.

This is a decent guide for those looking for places to ski the ungroomed, but there are scant tours for the "touring for turns" set. The directions on how to find the starting point sometimes presume local knowledge of the towns or detailed street maps, but the tour directions are usually clear.

Don't let the subtitle fool you. This book is not just of interest to theatre buffs. The short stories in this book are for the most part quite interesting. Comparing it with Stoker's other collections of short stories I would have to say this one falls in the middle. While it's not as good as "Dracula's Guest" it's better then "Under the Sunset".
