Touring Books

Slavinski's books describe bicycle touring in a way that most closely approximates my own rhythm and pace of cycling. The experienced cycle tourist will know what I mean. I recommend newcomers who want a book to try one of Slavinski's, as well as books by other cyclists. Perhaps you'll discover a writer who "speaks" to you. If not, then you may end up writing your own. Or you may become a truly independent rider--no books, *no* maps. Try it!

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in the Illinois and Michigan (I&M) Canal National Heritage Corridor (in Illinois) and its associated parks and forest preserves. The book begins with a nice history of the Canal, and then launches into information on the trail. Starting with Starved Rock State Park, the book then goes through the various sites along the Corridor, giving a nice map of the site, directions on how to get there, and information that was obviously gathered firsthand by the author.

This is a nice book, and (as I already said) an excellent resource. If you are at all interesting in hiking or biking along the I&M Canal path, or are merely interested in parks and forest preserves in North-Central Illinois, then I highly recommend that you get this book!

The latest in Trail Books' outstanding guidebook series, Sharyn Alden's Historical Wisconsin Getaways is an ideal introduction for touring Wisconsin's historical sites of interest and significance. Readers will become acquainted with Wisconsin's agricultural, mining and manufacturing history in every region of the Badger State. A veritable compendium of information, each region of the sate is showcased with historical overviews, including details for each historically significant city. There are listings of historically related attractions and events ranging from museums and restaurants to festivals and inns. Whether native born or a tourist passing through, from day-trips and weekend holidays to extended vacations anytime of the year, Historical Wisconsin Getaways is an ideal, highly recommended reference for planning Wisconsin trips and excursions.

This book tells the story of twelve men who set out to follow the Icelandic river Jokulsa-a-Fjollum from source to the sea just below the artic circle, a distance of 200 km. What makes it an incredible journey is the use of kayaks and microlight aircraft to traverse ice , rivers, and waterfalls through the icelandic wilderness. Starting as a hot spring deep in ice caves under a glacier, the river is considered one of the most difficult in the world. Iceland itself is a geolocical infant, wild and beautiful in its synthesis of volcanic fire and glacial ice. A bold and imaginative adventure in a wonderful and unappreciated wilderness.

Castañeda's study goes well beyond the common anthropological focus on the "impact" of tourism on Mayan communities, instead focusing on the complicated, historical relationships between Maya actors, anthropologists, and tourists at the well know archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, and the nearby - but not so well known - Maya community of Pisté. Castañeda's study weaves together the history of anthropology in Yucatan (with a particular focus on the works of Redfield and Steggarda), tourism (including a fascinating analysis of New Age spiritualists and Aztec revivalists during the equinox at Chichén Itzá), and local Maya actors (through an analysis of their engagement with anthropologists, tourists, and the Mexican state).

This book covers many of the great rides that most of the population areas of the state can ride. We have particularly enjoyed the level of detail of the routes off of highway 410. The author's superlative explanations were so enticing that we ventured the 100 miles from our home to test them out--ever point was justified. We have been back 3 times in the last month to try them again. Without a book like this, you just have to take your chances...with the odds not always in your favor.

Each documented route has great directions on how to get there and how to get through the route and back out with meticulous attention to the key scenic points, the level-setting of the difficulty, and the waypoints (in 10ths of miles).

On our last ride, we were discussing the ride up Bald Mountain with strangers who were also carrying the same book with them on their bikes. We're not the only advocates.

All-in-all, Kirkendall's book is a great motivator to get out and enjoy the splendor of this state on two wheels.

You can't be disappointed by this book.

A 64 page catalogue with introductory essay giving a historical and contemporary perspective of women printmakers in New Zealand. A very sound book , informative and attractive. Highly recommended.

A very readable book by a teacher who talks about the history of the places he rides through. This book, more than any other I've read, has made me want to ride my bike around the world - visiting people from all cultures and sharing in their views of the world. This was another of those books that you hope doesn't end

This is a book of ordnance maps mostly, detailing the whole country of Scotland. This is more in detail than a simple roadmap. I purchased it to study the lay of the land, including the altitudes of the highlands and lowlands.

But in addition to the detailed ordnance maps, there are several pictures, major highways are included and there are "12 tours" to give you some quick ideas for touring. All in all an excellent resource.

Very helpful book for finding fun places to go in Chicago. We go often and thought we knew most of the places to go, but were surprised to find so many new ones to try! Easy to use and well organized book.
