I alternated between not being able to put it down and easily forgetting about the book for a few days. Maybe it was the length of the book (it's LONG) or the countless different characters in the book, I think I may have just been "lost". I wish the glossary of terms that is in the back of the book had been in the front of the book (I didn't know it was there). It may have helped to have read it first (so I recommend doing that). It really is a good story and Rumer Godden is a great story teller, but it wasn't until around the middle of the book that I was committed to reading the book and then by the time I made it through about 75% of the book I was hooked. I am tempted to put it on the re-read list because I do think I would get much more out of it the second time through.

Rumer Godden is one of those female writers who from the very early age was exposed to life overseas (India). From then on, she sets on a path of being one of the writers like Isak Dinesen and Doris Lessing. Woman highly sensitive to people and cultures around her, who really has no land of her own but is curious about anything and eevrything around her. Her personal life was equally difficult, so it is interesting to read the book about the Catholic nuns living in monastery in England, traditionally protestant country. In this book we come across main character, Phillipa Talbot, 42 year old professional woman who decides to leave her worldly life and high position in order to pursue contemplative life a monastery. This is a big step for her as she decides to leave her job, relinquish all of her personal possesions and submit all her property to the church, not to mention her conversion to catholicism. Surely, most of the nuns are skeptical about her actions as she is considered "too old" for vow of poverty and obedience and this huge personal transformation. But Philippa has her mind set and she is sure that this is due to her personal convictions not due to her sorrow, guilt, regrets or any other emotions that may be distractions from a true vocation of leading meditative life for the rest of her natural life. Over a course of a decade we observe Phillipa's transformation. It is an interesting novel. For non-catholics, like myself, I recommend reading notes first that explains monastery life, monastic orders, greetings, vows, dowries, etc. before reading the actual book.

I'd heard about this book from various sources, and finally found it on Amazon. I am completely thrilled with it's ability to tell a great story, it's attraction as a spiritual journey, and it's honesty about living with others in cloister is no different that with our famiies. A wonderful read! But, be forwarned...you may be 'encouraged' to vocation!
So much to review...

First off, there is no question of Rumer Godden being a master story teller, a woman skilled at the crafting of words, of putting pen to paper and creating a world so detailed you would step into. A world, in this case, centered on the religious life of a Benedictine community and all who live in it. The abbey, the House of Brede, is a place where cloistered nuns turn out to be very, very human. With a history of pain and sin these women have to find themselves, to find love, joy, and balance in serving God. It is not easy and a few will fail. To try to review this book, this work of art, is beyond me. It really touched me in many ways yet also made me ponder about what kind of lives the women would have had outside the walls of the Brede. Would they have had families? Would they have run simple shops or would they have gained great wealth? Would they have made the world a better place? Or would they have just added to the pain and waste?
Philippa Talbot, a woman who was successful, intelligent and respected, enters the abbey at an age much later than most. She journey from one stage of development to another is amazing but also slightly sad. Change can be both and sometimes is. Birthdays, weddings, and graduations are happy and sad, full of laughter and crying. So by the time we reach the end of the book we find ourselves wondering about life, ourselves and the What Ifs of our own choices in life.

This book does a good job of showing the struggles and triumphs of cloistered life. The day to day life of these women, although seemingly boring from an outsider's view, is anything but. I really began to care for the characters and the recognized the importance of the lives they led. I love reading books on cloistered nuns because you feel like you've been let into this secret, magical existence and this book did just that.

If you need a quick, comprehensive marine fish reference book this is the one to get. It is small enough to bring with you to the fish store and get a quick rundown on behaviors, ease of keeping, etc.
If you ask the fish store about a fish, they are probably looking in this book for the answer.

This book has been unbelievably helpful in helping me to decide which fish I should choose as I set up my first saltwater aquarium. The photographs are clear and bright, and there are many, many species represented here. The code makes it quick and easy to see if a certain fish is compatible with what I already have in my tank. Now, when I go to buy a fish, I keep this book in my car. I go into the shop to see what they have, and if there is something that catches my interest, I'll come back out to the car and look up the description before I make a purchase. This has saved me on a few occasions - not all of the sales people really know what they're talking about, but I have complete confidence in this book for giving me the unbiased facts. This really is a "must buy"!!

As someone looking to start a saltwater tank, I picked up this book to fully understand what species I want and SHOULD put in the tank I plan on setting up. This book is invaluable in pointing me to fish that will be the most appropriate for me, a new saltwater aquarist, to support. This book is a saltwater version of Tropical Freshwater Aquarium Fish from A to Z (Compass Guides), which like the Marine Fishes book, includes detailed information about minimum tank sizes, feeding guidance, and tips for captive care. A "suitability" color-code is also displayed for each species ranging from green (a hardy fish which is suitable for most hobbyists) to red (leave the fish in the reef).
If you're new to saltwater tanks like me, I recommend you also read Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium and the Aquarium Corals : Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History to gain an understanding of what's required to set up and maintain a healthy saltwater environment. Slow and steady is the word. They've certainly helped me understand what it is I need to do and this Marine Fishes book is a handy take-along for visits to the local fish stores.

I actually enjoyed reading the first half of this book. It is easy to follow, it does have some very compelling insights. The two points I couldn't get past, though, were: 1.He stresses how our thoughts have no impact what-so-ever on our world as we know it. I'm pretty sure we all know that isn't true at all. 2. He later writes an entire chapter on "Being happy no matter what". He states, over and over, that there is nothing that can happen to us that we can't decide to just be happy all the while it's happening. He says this is true enlightenment, but my opinion is that we were given emotions as a gift, and experiencing the highs and lows of life is part of the process of growth. Without sadness as it's opposite, we would have no idea what bliss feels like. I realize many will disagree with me, but I just don't believe numbing myself to life is anything to strive for. I stopped reading the book after this chapter, perhaps I'll pick it up again later-perhaps not.

The search for Truth can be so convoluted, so complex, and yet, Michael Singer points out that it is rather simple. Truth transcends dogma, creed, relentless searching and, most importantly its source is within us, waiting for simple choices to be made. This elegantly simple book presented itself to me when I was looking for a different book, and after reading the first paragraph of the first chapter I bought it. It is laser-like in its focus and clarity. His prose is simple, direct and practical.
One of the teachings of Buddhism is that "When the student is ready to learn, the teacher will appear." Perhaps that is why this book stands out for me--it was a message I was ready to hear, and its transformative power is remarkable. There are no elaborate skills to master here--you just keep returning to the simple lessons he provides and in a short period of time you feel deep changes taking place. He explains how the psyche works, why we do the self destructive things we do, and how we untangle the intricate web of false assumptions we operate out of that keep us in fear, anxiety and confusion.
Notice all of the 5-Star ratings. This is one to read over and over again...

As Singer described the crazy mind (our inner roomate), I found myself laughing through the the first 50 pages of this book. I realize that my laughter comes from the deeper self which observes the mind.
I recently read Eckhart Tolle's "Power of Now" and "A New Earth". Singer's book is a great adjunct. I highly recommend this book.

I've read my share of spiritual guidance from D.T. Suzuki right on up through Eckhardt Tolle, and I've also sat before a number of today's popular teachers. There is nothing else like this to be found.
It's the keys to the castle...
an instruction manual detailing the moment by moment experience of the psyche at work upon the path of purification in pursuit of self realization. He is offering the naked truth of spiritual work and awakening as it has never been put forth in the English language. It's that simple.
All vagueness and obscurity are stripped away and the meaning laid bare, leaving us face to face with its ancient message, the core truths of egoic existence, consciousness and freedom.
If spiritual communication can be likened to the sounding of a bell, this one is ringing with the most penetrating clarity. Beyond it lies not much more than the implementing, leaving it and all other vehicles aside and stepping through the door or doors for oneself. Thank you Mr. Singer.

His hero was Joe Dimaggio wh kept his promise to young joe and Joe Carrieri kept his prmise to the reeaders who share his love of the game. Dimaggio may not have been a hero to everyone but he was a hero on the field and that was the focus of the story. The writing was clean and the read fast----I loved it.

I loved this one growing up. Really. Amelia Bedelia always choose the funniest possible interpretation of words, and her name rhymes! What's not to love?
The one thing I'd be concerned about is that a lot of the usages in this book are going to be unfamiliar to your young kid. I don't think many of us say "draw the curtains" anymore, and even if we do, we probably don't often talk about "trimming" steak (with or without lace!) or "dressing" chicken, at least, not around our kids. Maybe we should, but we don't.
So this book might be better saved for read-aloud time than read-alone time.

A fun (and funny) book which will delight kids with Amelia's well-intentioned but mistake-laden chores. Kids feel empowered because they are 'smarter' than the character and are able to cheer her on. In the end, Amelia's good deeds overpower any mistakes she makes.
I recommend this book for any child who is beginning to read on their own!

This is surly a kids favorite since I was a little girl! We join Amelia Bedelia as she starts her first day of work for the Rodgers. They rush off shortly after she arrives, but they've left her a list of things to do. Should be a snap, as all the tasks are simple and clearly stated...but that's what you think...Amelia Bedelia begins completing each chore in quite a literal fashion...drawing the drapes and much, much more! Younger kids (1-4) will like the silliness of it and beginner readers and more savvy grade schoolers (5-8) will like that's it's simple and clever/silly too! I recommend it without reservation! I'm sure Amelia will be with us, teaching fine lessons about the words we use and the many means they can have for generations to come!

Eventhough it seems like I've heard this story time and time again (you know the hustler's wife story) I still enjoyed it. It was not refreshing but was very well written and I was in love with Portia from the beginning. She was such a lost soul, tricking herself out like that but when she met Jay her entire life changed for the better. I loved it and poor Simone! I never ever saw that coming, but that goes to show you that you never really know what a man will do to you. If you have not read this please do. I loved the aids statistics that was included and the fact that there was a moral to this urban story made it a little bit better than the rest. I am looking forward to more from this writer, but I don't know if I will get the sequel because I don't know what else there is for me to read about these characters.

This was a great read!!! I can't believe I was slipping on this book. I had it just sitting in my bookshelf catching dust for months. I regret that now! There was never a dull moment. It kept my adrenaline pumping fast! There was so much action and drama, I wouldn't know how to being to give a synopsis. So all I can say is READ THE BOOK! You won't be disappointed. I can't wait to read part II. Ms. Caroline McGill definitely has a new fan in me.

When I first saw this book I thought it wasn't gonna be good just because the cover looked kind of cheesy but once I started reading it I couldn't put it down it was so good! The book is about four friends Portia,Fatima,Laila, and Simmone. The drama is so amazing you won't be able to get enough. Caroline McGill is a very talented writer and I look forward to reading all of her books because she has a way of making her story just flow off the pages.

It took me the longest time to get around to reading this book. If someone would have told me how good it was I would have jumped on it as soon as I got it. This book is definitely for the grown and sexy. Portia Lane plays the part of Mystique a stripper. She faces a number of trails that she refuses to let them get the better of her. This is a fast pace book that covers all of the bases. Jay Mitchell is a thug with a heart, he is doing his best to go legit and with the help of Portia they are an unbeatable team. Let me invite you on a trip so that you can see how they ride. This book is a must read.

Victoria's Secret is my 2nd novel by Jason Poole and my 3rd Cartel Publication book that I've read. I must say this is my FAVORITE thus far. Jason has a extrodinary gift of writing and you can definitely tell he did his research. His hard work paid off with a GREAT NOVEL about new-age pimpin'. This novel shares the love between two people who will do ANYTHING, God willing, for one another to survive. VERY well written I read this book in less then 24 hours, that's how great this book is. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GO GET IT!
GREAT JOB JASON! I know there is going to be a #2!!!

This book was sick! I wasn't expecting this book to be as good as it was. I had never heard of Jason Poole before but I was definitely impressed. It's crazy what women would do for a man. The PIMP game is grimy as hell! I had no idea! LOL The ending threw me for a complete loop though. That was an ending that I wasn't expecting. I would like to read a sequel to this. I know that Babyface doesn't survive but I would like to see what happens when Victoria awakens. Excellent read! I can't wait to read more from this author. I DEFINITELY recommend that everyone get a copy of this book in your collection.

PRESENT DAY:
This time Babyface couldn't save her. Here lies Victoria in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit; comatose on the brink of death and Babyface hasn't a clue who did this to her!! In turmoil Babyface canvass the hospital room with his eyes as if the perpetrator was hiding in the shadows. Frustrated Babyface goes through Victoria's belongings and comes across her dairy...
REWIND:
Emerging from a trouble childhood, Victoria Gray finally found someone she loves and who loves her back unconditionally...Babyface.
Babyface became Victoria's prince after he saved her from the brutal clutches of Wayne who was in the midst of revealing his true colors to Victoria!! Babyface also being from a trouble past, bonded with Victoria who now felt she had someone worth living for.
With Babyface already living on the streets and Victoria not being able to go back home due to a brewing situation; the good looking pair take it to the streets where they dabble in small time hustling before finding their niche as Pimp and Bottom Hoe.
Bringing in Victoria's childhood friend Penny, this trio takes the pimp and hoe game to another level moving the action through different cities. With Victoria's sexy body and Penny's street smarts, money is gracing "Pimp" Babyface's hands affording them luxury cars and jewelry.
"Pimping hard" is what they do, but as with any "job" there is rivalry and jealousy. With the game of life or death playing to close for comfort it's time to take the money and run.
Read along with Babyface as he searches Victoria's dairy and rewinds back to the past to see if he can find out who harmed his lover. Will the dairy hold the key to her attacker? What secrets will Babyface find out about his beloved Victoria?
Author Jason Poole has taken readers into the world of pimps sporting the big brimmed hats and shinny colored suits with their hoes strutting on the boulevard. But this is a new age and Jason has put a new spin on one of the world's oldest profession and brought it all the way to 2008!!!
The story is fast, intriguing, and sexy. The ending is so SHOCKING it just left me loss for words.
NO-ONE is going to tell you Victoria's Secret, so you're just going to have to buy this book and find out for yourself!!!

Jason Poole seizes his readers' undivided attention as he reveals an extraordinary scenario in the grimy lives of the people that personify the oldest profession known to man. He shows us the world of pimps, prostitutes, and the foulness that encamps amidst their daily activities and where they lay their heads. He introduces us to an unforgettable duo that pledge their allegiance to each other and ride like the villainous Bonnie and Clyde into the sunset fearlessly seeking their destiny.
Poole launches the storyline with a frantic Babyface rushing into the hospital looking for his lady Victoria, who's been assaulted and left for dead. He finds her in a coma in ICU fighting for her life without a clue to who, what, when, or most importantly, why. Babyface holds vigil at her bedside and is presented with her diary which gives a vivid and enlightening account of her tumultuous life. This gives him even more respect for her swagger, and makes him more determined to encourage her on to recovery. Babyface is Victoria's fiancé as well as her pimp. As he turns each page of her diary, each new revelation intensifies his thirst for vengeance. Victoria's life seems to have been destined for misery, as her diary reveals her witnessing the horrifying death of both of her parents. Being rejected by family members, she finds a blessing in her placement at the House of Love group home. There she finds her niche among two other orphans that will play a major part in her life in the past and present.
Victoria's Secret is a spellbinding novel that delivers an explicit yet realistic look at the people that live in the realms of the oldest trade in history. Jason Poole taps into all aspects of this taboo lifestyle. He begins with the initial reasoning surrounding the choices that these ladies make when they claim the role of a prostitute, hoe, or lady of the night. The women sleep with any and all to surrender their hard earnings to their pimp! Victoria's Secret is swarming with jealous individuals with cold, conniving hearts, lack of conscience, scheming, competitive, and murderous plots and plans...all for the sake of being that 'bottom bitch.' Pimps up, Hoes down! Great storyline Jason, major props to you!

This remains to this day possibly the BEST book I have read at all concerning my religion. For those of us out there who want to move past all the books for beginers with endless explinations about what a besom is and what color candles to use, and actually want to think about their religion in an open way, this is a wonderful book. Never preachy, often funny, thought provoking, and at times heartwarming, Sylvans writing makes us question ourselves and gives us ideas for actually living the path we chose, every day, at all times. For those of us who are simply wiccan and dont practice magic, the emphasis on maintaining your relationship with God over spells and tools is much appreciated. Do not pass this book by. Sylvan, if you're seeing this (doubtful but we can hope lol) WRITE MORE BOOKS! :)
A must have for any pagan library.

I love this book. I literally have worn it to death. I'm sick of all the Wiccan books anymore. All they do is focus on spells, magick, candles, the tools, and on and on when their really is more to Wicca. This a nice change of pace. It talks about how to live Wiccan everyday. How to live comapssionately and with grace. It's a very informative book. And she is lighthearted about everything. She doen't try to cram it down your throat and she is knowledgeable about what she's writing. I would recommend this book especially if your sick of the mainstream Wiccan books and would like something with more heart and soul.
Can't believe I went so long without it...

This book is truly a blessing from the Goddess. I was wondering why I still wasn't feeling "complete" with my practice - like something was missing. For a while, this little voice in my head was telling me to get the book, and I kept saying,"No, not yet, not yet."
Finally, I listened and am so glad that I did.
I read this book within a matter of hours, and now it has a prominent spot in my Witchie bookshelf. It helped me realize a few things that I didn't pay attention to before, and I think, helped me to reconnect to what drew me to Wicca in the first place.
Please - if you were feeling like I did, get this book. Also, make sure to pick up her other book, THE BODY SACRED. I'm looking forward to more of Ms Sylvan's titles in the future.

This colorful guide book to the reef fish of Florida, the Bahamas, and the Carribean is an excellent reference. Fish are shown in beautiful color pictures with information on size, shape, where to find them, and how they are likely to react to divers.
All the usuals are of coures here but so are many less commonly seen in guide books. Written information also includes descriptions of common variants.
An all around excellent book for the semiserious to serious snorkeler or diver who enjoys identifing what they see.

At one time I was the head of a volunteer organization in WPB, Florida that assisted Palm Beach County with their artifical reef program. Part of the qualification was to get training in a variety of related subjects (like fish identification) sponsored by the Florida Oceanographic Society. This book served as our fish identification "bible." I no longer live in FL, but when I go diving in the Caribbean I stil take this book with me. If you need to (or just want to) know the fish of the Caribbean, buy this book.

This is a reef fish identification book. This sounds obvious, but that really is the focus here. It's not a book to teach you about fish behavior, biogeography, community ecology, or population trends. Author, diver, captain, photographer, and attorney (!) Paul Humann took most of the 670 photographs in this book, a real accomplishment for any diver, since the result of a blurred or indistinct photograph of a fish is to... go get another.
The organization of this ID book is by fish shape. He's got 12 "identification groups":
- disks and ovals (colorful)
- silvery
- sloping head and tapered body
- small ovals
- heavy body and large lips
- swim with pectoral fins, and with obvious scales
- reddish and big eyes
- small, elongated bottom-dwellers
- old-shaped bottom dwellers
- odd-shaped swimmers
- eels
- sharks and rays
Any fish watcher would see the "logic" of this organization, although it could make some ichthyologists squirm with these sets of artificial groupings.
The book is spiral-bound so that the pages, when opened, stay open. And the clay content in the paper makes it more resistant to water dripping from your wetsuit or your hair. Just make sure you wipe it off, pronto.
Now the photos... They are very high quality, and Humann is to be commended for taking, or selecting from other photographers, pictures that really pull out the details of the various fish . For example, the Sergeant Major has the delicate yellow along the base of its dorsal fin, and those frogfish must be viewed in both a camouflaged condition and in a setting where they are contrasted with the background.
Any amateur photographer will soon discover the difficulty in getting a full, close-up and lateral view of a fish. They tend to swim away from you as you get close, giving you a great view of the tail sweeping away. These photos are the result of a truly amazing amount of patience.
In an appendix, he throws in some sea turtles and dolphins or good measure, as well as a checklist for keeping track of the reader's sightings.
My ocean diving has all been in the Pacific, and it was interesting seeing species related to my own "friends." If I get the opportunity to dive in Florida, the Caribbean, or the Bahamas, this will be the book I throw in my dive bag... in a zip-lock bag, of course.
