Dora Done Right

Review Date: 2007-03-26
If you've read other Dora books, you know that not all actually capture the essence of the show...I know it's not Shakespeare, but come on... at least try & get the basic elements that the kids recognize into the books such as if we need to know where to go, ask the kids who they need to as (Map!) then explain where their going, let the kids yell, "Backpack!" & then pick what item they need to help Dora & her friends, etc. The book includes counting, singing silly songs (a favorite of our daughter's), and an extra bonus if your child loves Diego too, he's along for the ride. We read this book about every night (it's one of our daughter's favorites), and it isn't painful-like some children's books can be. I have fun singing & listening to my daughter participate, sing along (something she started with this book) & laugh, and you probably will too.

Just right for the little ones

I am not a parent, nor am I experienced in reading books for small children, but I had heard of Dora the Explorer and, when I saw this book at the office, where I worked, about to be tossed out, as it was getting pretty beat up, I thought I would give it a try.

This is a glossy, 8" by 8" 24-page paperback, that is very colorful, and it is aimed at ages baby through preschool. It is meant, I believe, as a read-to or read-along book. The text is by Lisa Valdes and the illustrations are by Dave Atkins.

The illustrations are large, plentiful, very colorful, and decidedly upbeat. The text is cheerful and adventurous in tone and suited well for its purposes and target audience. The story involves Dora and her friends wanting to put on a play about pirates, but having their plan waylaid when piggy pirates snatch their chest full of costumes. The piggy pirates mistake the chest for a treasure chest, and whisk it away to an island. Using a very helpful and talkative map, Dora and her friends sail off in pursuit. Along the way, there is a counting task, in Spanish, plus they have to help the singing bridge sing its silly song the right way. The conclusion involves a non-violent confrontation with the piggy pirates, that lends a touch of suspense, without being scary.

The tone of the story is not only fun and adventurous, but also very inviting. It repeatedly, but not annoyingly, invites the reader and those being read to, to join in. The counting and the singing are clearly aimed at this. The story moves quickly and that, combined with the abundant and colorful illustrations, should make it good at engaging and holding the attention of young children. The characters are depicted as cute and friendly, with Dora definitely taking center stage. While Diego is along for the ride, he does not say anything.

The book itself, while the copy I read was pretty beat up, looks very durable. I work in a children's mental health clinic, and the book likely got a lot of use by several children, some of whom might well be quite aggressive and destructive. That this book survived, for months, in our waiting room, is a testament to its heartiness.

It's all here, everything to get started on the kit and more.
-There are the basic of basics: holding the sticks, practice tips, components of the drumset, note values and beginning sight-reading exercises.
-There are the fundamentals: syncopation lessons, stick control, rudiments, rolls, stickings, dynamics and accent studies
-There are drumset studies: bass drum/hi-hat/snare drum variations, plenty of examples in different musical styles and solos.

There are entire books devoted to any one of these aforementioned topics and here they all are in one clear, concise book with CD!!! Beginner or intermediate, you can't go wrong.

This brick played a large part in inspiring TreeHugger.com. Full of pictures and key info about sexy, green furniture, transportation, materials, clothing, and more, it's the bible of green design. Each selection in the book has a handy legend that explains the eco-design strategy applied, the materials used, designer, etc. It's a fascinating read for both the average green-interested consumer and the hard-core green designer. Instantly up your eco-status by sliding this into your coffee-table collection.

Great Little Coffee Table Book

Review Date: 2006-10-31
Full of great inspiration and ideas for a professional designer and casual reader alike, this little book is a must-have addition for anyone interested in alternative design, architecture, or furniture. It is full of pictures and short descriptions of each item, making it perfect for flipping through in your spare time. It reads almost like an in-depth catalogue, but with the integrity (and lack of ads) that comes with being a book. The designs are fantastic, even if they werent eco-friendly. Great book for those who prefer reading tid-bits after seeing a picture they like rather than reading page after page. GREAT IDEAS!

Just a nice Handbook on Leadfree Soldering

I like this book very much! This is the most comprehensive Handbook to leadfree soldering I have ever seen. I learned a lot from this book and it is very useful for my jobs. I carry it with me when I am at work. I open this book when I have problems, and it can always help me find the solutions. I recommend this book to all the manufacturing engineers and managers who are designing and making electronics products.

Outstanding book in electronics manufacturing

This is a very special book!
The focus of this book is on leadfree soldering: from chip-level interconnects, IC packaging, printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication, to PCB assemblies. It provides many useful information and engineering data related to leadfree soldering. These include: design, material selection, process development, equipment selection, manufacturing, and reliability of leadfree soldering. I found these information very useful for my job as an R&D engineer.

This book is very unique!
Even it's focus is on leadfree sodering, however, this book talks about the major problems created by leadfree soldering. These include halogen-free molding compounds for plastic packages and halogen-free epoxy resins for PCBs. This information helps me to design my electronic and photonic products so they can withstand the leadfree soldering environments.

This book is wonderful!
One of the alternatives to leadfree soldering is to use conductive adhesives. This book talks about this very important subject in great details. I enjoy very much in reading the technical contents underlining this technology.

Overall, this is a great book! I would like to recommend to everyone who is working in electronic and optoelectronic products. Hats off to the authors for writing such a comprehensive handbook on leadfree soldering. Congratulations!

This book take a complete coverage on the EMC subjetc. All topics are well covered as test, regulations, design and troubleshooting. Even if you are not an EMC test enginer I highly recommend to learn something about this task, because some of the non compliance issues, really are setup and test not well done. The EMC test is not as easy to start a program in the PC and create reports, by the contrary there is a lot of science to know what we really are doing, and few EMC test engineers are prepared to do this.
The book is 100 per 100 profitable, it has the honor to be next to my
prefered ones.

The first half of the book is about all of the government EMC regulations. The second half starts with the basics of how interference happens, then shows ways to eliminate it. Following this are several case studies.

If you can only afford 1 book on EMC make it this one. It covers the general field very well and deserves its' standing as the definitive text on EMC. It does not cover some aspects of design as well as specialist texts but gives enough of a background to get a reader moving in the right direction. If you are new to EMC or want a background to what all the fuss is about, this is the best starting point you can have.

excellent compendium on stat methods in biostatistics

Review Date: 2008-02-09
Chow has done an excellent job of collecting articles from the leading researchers in the pharmaceutical and biologics industry including FDA employees. The terms are specialized but important to those industries. The articles are scholarly and informative. The quality is similar to those in the Encyclopedia of Statistical Science. Most of the terms are also of interest to statisticians like myself who work in the medical device industry. A sample of the items are "Adjustment for Covariates", "Bayesian Statistics", "Bioassay", "Clinical Trials", "Equivalence Trials", "Food and Drug Administration", "Intention-to-Treat Analyses", "International Conference on Harmonization", "Multiple Comparisons", "Postmarketing Surveillance", "Sample Size Determination", and "Surrogate Endpoint".
This is a particularly good reference for statisticians who work on clinical trials regulated by the FDA. However keep in mind that it is very specialized and is rather expensive.

Great Engineering Book, but not as a Textbook
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-16
This book is definitely vital to beginning engineers and people who are just interested in the topic. It explains many of the intracacies of project design and gives a complete process of how to complete an actual engineering project. Most likely this will be used as a textbook in universities, but should be accompanied with another book that more fully explains some of the terms. It is best used as a reference while working on a project or for later design classes. There is simply to much information to base tests on it. That said, the book is very thorough in explaining how to create a schedule, the various diagrams, charts and table, planning, the relationship between client, user and designer and how to complete the project on time and sucessfully. If you were not required to take an intro to engineering design class and are faced with a high level design class, this would be a great reference to use.

Finally, a book that incorporates corporate responsiblity for the environment while maintaining the practicality of concern for the bottom line. It covers all the bases with respect to how within the financial sector companies can adjust to environmental change, include environmental reporting in their balance ledgers, and learn about the wide variety of investment products with origins in environmental issues being introduced into the market. Truly a pioneer in a field that commands attention.

Discusses the development of environmental policies and products as well as the new products that are being created, such as pollution permits, weather derivatives, catastrophe bonds, etc. A good resource for those interested in hedging environmental risk and exploring the growing intersection between finance and the environment.
