Don't forget the design

What's so striking about this book is its wonderful graphic design. Every gadget is layed out with its own full page graphic design treatment. I'm normally pretty tired of this whole 80's retro thing.... but this is the best of the best of it.

This book covers the art and design of those crappy little handheld games that were so popular in the 1980s...we're talking pre gameboy. I remember owning a few of these machines and also remember seeing a few in the stores that I wanted....this book really brings back a lot of memories and shows that we really have come very far in video game design.

This a book about nothing, really. Hundreds of eletronic pre- video-game-era games photographed sometimes with its original boxes, fully illustrated, colored and detailed. But what is it about? It's about when you had 8 to 16 years, wasting hours, days maybe of your childhood trying to get Mario upstairs where Donkey Kong lives. It's about making 999 points in each and every "game and watch" adventure. It's about dream with the lights and sounds of those games. Maybe it's a book about remembering old friends.

A Must Read for Corporate Executives

Review Date: 2008-07-07
I have been involved in corporate turnarounds and strategic renewal for more than two decades. Many companies, unfortunately, attempt to rely on chance, fate, luck or magic to solve their growth issues or they continue to stay wedded to the same strategies that have led to their stalled growth while still expecting different outcomes. Now, there is a book and an author that has a better solution. Dr. Meyer offers a rigorous but pragmatic approach for enterprises that truly wish to ensure sustained growth. Moreover, he demonstrates in a tangible way that his approach really works by highlighting companies who have followed his methodology. If you are an executive who wants to learn how to leverage knowledge, innovation, and creative business models to ensure long-term corporate growth, this is a must read. F.G. Crane, Former President, QMA Consulting Group Ltd.

Innovation by other means

Review Date: 2008-07-06
Most enterprises understand that they must innovate if they hope to survive and grow. The quest for radical, new-to-the-world innovation is one way to go, but is costly, uncertain, and often takes ten years or more to bear fruit. The other path--the path most often taken--is incremental innovation of existing product/service lines for current customers and markets. This incremental approach is safer and faster, and keeps the cash registers ringing, but cannot revitalize the business.

In THE FAST PATH TO CORPORATE GROW, Marc Meyer provides a third option for business managers and R&D professionals: innovation in markets and in business models. His book offers a practical method for leveraging existing technical capabilities and know-how to new customer groups. He provides an answer to the question: "How can we serve new customers and create new businesses from the technological capabilities we have already mastered?"

Well worth reading. Many examples of successful implementation.

Assuring corporate growth

Review Date: 2008-07-04
All enterprises are in transition whether they like it or not. Marc Meyer presents explicit examples of how enlightened management address the inevitable "transitions" they face in the pursuit of corporate growth by leveraging knowledge and technologies that have the latent potential of stimulation of their paths to growth. He presents compelling approaches that have produced signification growth and revitalization of their established methods of new product or services development. His methods require disciplines that, at first blush, seem difficult and too rigorous to implement within the organizations. However, his examples of IBM, Mars, and Honda give confidence of successful outcomes if applied. His general principles can be applied and are aptly suitable to arrays of product or services with unexpected positive results even in the face of difficulties, impediments, and risks. This book requires a serious "reading" worthy of the effort. Alvin P. Lehnerd

the gobal brain

"The gobal brain" and the models for networks elucidated therein in detail provided an highly interesting theoretical basis for a newly developed IT technology ("collaborative network portal (CNP)") by our start-up company, bv cluster (the Netherlands), dedicated to improve the efficiency/efectiveness of open (R&D) innovation projects in network environments.
It ("The global brain") helped us to identify important dimensions in open R&D projects in network environments. We can use it for improvement of our implementation methodology of this CNP technology. Great stuff for our company and it confirmed that we are on the right track with our approach.

The Global Brain is absolutely brilliant!

The Global Brain is absolutely brilliant. The authors build upon insightful theoretical and practical bases to guide managers through the vast array of innovation sourcing options. They employ an eclectic combination of practical examples from numerous industries and sectors, indicating the global appeal of the ideas of this book.

Managers have four models, which they can choose from:

(1) The Orchestra Model
(2) The Creative Bazaar Model
(3) The Jam Central Model &
(4) The MOD ("MODification") Station Model

The use of these inspiring entertainment industry metaphors to model network-centric innovation enables the authors to describe how managers can make sense of the vast array of innovation opportunities that exist in their ecosystem. The notion that a company can play different innovation roles while employing one of the four models of network-centric innovation helps bring home the fundamental caution of this book, which is "in a world of network-centric innovation, one size does not fit all".

How to communicate, cooperate, and collaborate effectively in a "flat world"

With regard to the term Global Brain, Satish Nambisan and Mohanbir Sawhney refer to "the diverse set of external players that constitute the innovation network for the companies" discussed in this book such as P&G, IBM, Boeing, and Apple]; and Network-centric innovation to describe "the underlying principles of collaborative innovation in such a context." They add that a common theme n their research was their interest in the concept of distributed innovation. That is, "innovation initiatives that are spread across a diverse network of partners." Their vehicle for exploration was the Kellogg Innovation Network (KIN) -- "a forum for senior innovation managers of large companies - affiliated with the Center for Research in Information and Technology that [Sawhney] directs at the Kellogg School of Management. The KIN is an excellent example of the power of the Global Brain in action."

Nambisan and Sawhney carefully organize and present their material within five Parts. During the course of their narrative, they respond to questions such as these:

Why should companies seek innovation externally during a transition from being firm-centric and network-centric?

What are the core principles of network-centric innovation?

What are the four basic models and key elements of network-centric innovation?

How to develop a contingent framework that maps the context for innovation?

Which guidelines can help managers to evaluate the different types of opportunities that are most appropriate to their organization's resources, capabilities, and strategies?

What are the implications of network-centric innovation for the emerging economies?

What are the common trends in various countries' emerging economies?

How to analyze the potential for companies in these countries to "plug into the global brain"?

I especially appreciate Nambisan and Sawhney's provision of dozens of real-world examples that illustrate their key points. For example, in Chapter 5 they examine what they characterize as "the orchestra model" that can take two quite different forms: The Orchestra-Integrator model and the Orchestra-Platform model. With regard to the former, they examine Boeing's 787 Dreamliner project and include Table 5.1 (Pages 96-97) that portrays the project's specific elements of network-centric innovation. With regard to the Orchestra-Platform Model, they examine Salesforce.com and the AppExchange Forum. Figure 5.3 (Pages 110-111) illustrates the elements of its network-centric innovation.

"In both the Integrator and Platform model, the innovation architecture defined by the dominant firm becomes the context for the network partners to innovate...In both cases, the tricky part is to bring together a diverse set of capable partners who are sufficiently committed to the innovation architecture and to orchestrate their activities in a manner that leads to outcomes that are beneficial to all the network members."

After completing their exploration of the Global Brain and "painting a picture of the landscape of network-centric innovation," Nambisan and Sawhney urge their reader to chart her or his own organization's "journey" to position it as a player in the same rich and diverse landscape. "We have a simple mantra for [achieving] this: Think BIG, Start SMALL, Scale FAST."

Bon voyage!

All in all a must read for anyone involved in moving product, and a well crafted argument that eco and profits need not be mutually exclusive.

"In recent years most books about our environment have been dismal. Advertisers have struggled with their reputation of deviously twisting public perspectives. How refreshing it is to read about ecological, honest marketing! As an environmental fashion consultant, I consider myself knowledgeable in materials and derivative uses. Yet I learned from this book about utilizing milkweed for pillows and how natural scrap fabrics can be applied as garden mulch. I'm hoping for a third edition." -Delia Montgomery, Chíc Eco Directory Author

In this book, Eric Bergman surveys some of the most influential and thoughtful people in the user interface design world - Don Norman, Chuck Clanton, David Haitani (designer of the Palm Pilot) and more. Their comments are insightful, practical, and visionary at the same time. I particularly liked the chapters by David Haitani and the one by Chuck Clanton on computer game design. This book will be helpful to anyone who has designed software user interfaces for desktop machines or web sites and is now wondering what the brave new world of wireless devices might look like.

I find that I like read the chapters in order of what interests me, not necessarily in the order they are bound together in the book. And that is a strength of the book - it acts more like a reference than like a novel. In this way, it reminds me of Brenda Laurel's excellent book "The Art of Human Computer Interaction."

Many information technology designers forget that the purpose of product design is not to display technical virtuosity, it is to help their users solve problems in the real world. This book, alone among those I've read, confronts this issue in a compelling and useful way. It's a "must read" for anyone thinking seriously about how to design information products.

Well written and interesting to read, Information Appliances & Beyond is the lone book (at least that I've come across) that helps product designers create Information Appliances. The Interview with the creator of the Palm Pilot is excellent, as are the examples of the Nokia 7110 mobile phone, and the i-opener. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the future of consumer computing.

The Lundberg's book "I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better" has been a great resource to me as a church leader and counselor. When their new book "Married for Better, Not Worse" was released I bought it without hesitation. It is well researched and they have carefully integrated their own ideas with concepts and articles from many others. The real test of any book is if it can help stimulate a positive lasting and permanent change in behavior and understanding. In order for that to happen it must be easy to read, offer hope that conflict relief is achievable, and contain common sense solutions to everyday problems. Although there are many books available on this popular subject, it has become my book of choice when counseling couples in trouble. I have already witnessed some very positive results with its use.

The Lundbergs first book, "I Don't Have To Make Everything All Better" has been a great resource to me as church counselor. When ths new book came out, I purchased it without hesitation. It is written in the same easy to read and common sense approach. The chapter on improving communication reminds the reader the importance of validation and teaches this important skill. The chapter on sexual intimacy is very direct and to the point. Other chapters address specific tasks and exercises to help restore romance and nurture each other. It is well researched and carefully integrates important material and ideas from many other articles.

There are countless books out there on this subject. The real test is if it has the capacity and content to help troubled couples make permanent and lasting changes in their relationship. I have already used this book several times in counseling settings with members of my congregation, all with very positive feedback and results. It has become my book of choice when couples ask for reading material to help solve conflict or enhance their marriage.
