This book is inspired. And it's not just for 'ad-folk', but anyone who appreciates how much influence kids has on the future of branding. The message in BRANDchild is super-powerful. Just see how beautifully the examples in this book elucidate the idea, taking it beyond ideology to reality backed by tons of data and research. If you want a how-to manual on the future of kid's communication, you've found it. If you're anywhere near business, you'd better wake up and listen to Lindstrom's advice in BRANDchild.

This is an excellent book about marketing to children. Based on extensive research into the attitudes, perceptions, emotions and preferences of children around the world, it tells you in no uncertain terms how to target one of the biggest and most influential consumer populations on earth. Children between the ages of 8 and 14, dubbed "tweens" ("tweenagers") by the authors, are a curious group. They are also a lonely, insecure group with an engaging mix of naiveté and sophistication. Devilishly hard to capture, they are a rich economic prize, controlling an enormous amount of money of their own, and strongly influencing their families' purchases, even of major appliances. This book shows you what matters to these kids and what false notes to avoid if you want to tap into their buying power. We acknowledge that some readers may be uncomfortable with such tactics as setting up a web site that pretends to belong to a friendly child in order to attract kids and start buzz about some brand, but the book's reporting is accurate, practical and forward looking, for good or ill.

This book is the secret weapon for anyone who markets to kids or wants to. Lindstrom manages to make the subject entertaining and engaging while teaching you a pile of indispensible techniques to capture a kid's heart.

Not only does the book teach you how to market products better, it gets you thinking different. Suddenly, you're developing products and strategies with kids in mind, and you understand why certain products are big hits with kids.

Another funny thing about this book...it helps you to understand kids better. For readers with their own kids, this could be the greates value of all.

Great Book!

Martin Lindstrom does a great job letting the reader know that the root of success when communicating with kids is understanding kids, their lives, dreams and hopes. He not only analyzes data from 7 countries, but includes his own experiences with working with kids and with kids related brands. He is able to get his point across without being boring, looking at the subject form different angles.
I also checked out the MartinLindstrom.com site. I think it is a great site, with tons of brand info related to kids and general brand trends. Well done!

"Finally! A credible and definitive guide to the inner workings of network marketing that demystifies the whats, whys and hows of the corporate side of the industry. Angela Moores Building a Successful Network Marketing Company effectively lays out the crucial concepts, components and systems that separate the here-today-gone-tomorrow schemes from the long term successful network marketing companies. The approach is professional, the content rich and it provides an invaluable resource to start-up and mature direct selling businesses and executives. This book is a must to put the form and function of network marketing management into perspective. It is at the head of my client "required reading" list.

A number of books have been written by networkers and industry executives that address the subject from varying perspectives and degrees of experience. Each of them add their contribution to the literature base, but none gives a more complete treatment and clear picture of what it takes to establish and operate a successful MLM business. This book can save readers immeasurable time and expense. The thoughtful reader will find the breadth of content makes this a vital resource reference book for every department and executive/staff member of their business.

Ms. Moore writes from a wealth of personal experience, yet judicially accesses the experts in those areas where here experience can be strengthened by collaboration. Her access to the industrys top advisors and executive professionals further speaks of the breadth of her experience and understanding of the operational elements of the business.

While the treatment is focused on the corporate side of the industry, direct selling distributors and network marketing leaders will find the information enlightening and will be better able to form the field to company partnerships that supercharge their own and the corporations success and longevity. Field leaders will do well to study the text to better understand the critical support service dimension of the business to better create the synergy of field and corporate relationships.

Thanks Angela. Building a Successful Network Marketing Company will undoubtedly help many companies do just that."

Easy to read, full of insight, with step-by-step guidelines from someone who has built and led successful sales teams and business organizations.

Great MLM Business Book...

This is probably the best book I have read on the multilevel marketing industry to date. Although small in size, it is absolutely packed with valuable information.

Despite the title's name, this book is valuable to everyone who is involved in MLM, not just those contemplating starting their own MLM company. Its straightforward writing style and well researched text are a refreshing change from the many mindless motivational books available in the MLM industry today.

Although the book is pro-MLM in general, it does not gloss over any aspects of the industry, or try to sell it as a get-rich-quick panacea. It mainly seems to be aimed at businesspeople new to the industry, who are trying to understand it for the very first time. It's not written for "MLM junkies", but for professionals who actually want to learn the real ins and outs of the business. An informative background of MLM's history is included, as is a look at what differentiates MLM's from traditional business models.

Probably the most fascinating aspect of the book is the insider's view it gives on how MLM's are formed. It lays-out the requirements for an MLM to be successful, as well as explain the elements that all (successful) MLMs have in common. It practically gives you a blueprint of how all MLM's are formed, and how they are successfully run. This isn't the type of information you will find in typical MLM books.

Other valuable parts of the book include a look at the legalities of MLM, most common mistakes made by MLMs, structuring the sales organization, compensation plans, product selection and more.

If you buy only one book on multilevel marketing, this should be it. It is well written, well researched and contains a treasure trove of valuable information.

A MUST for any suppliers to Network Marketing Companies.

This is a great book and I agree with Mr. Leeb. However, I remember the 1970's and Mr. Leeb likes to compare today with what happened in the 1970's and assumes things might happen the same way in our next oil crisis. From 2008 to 2030, this is a very different type of oil crisis, this is about depletion of the world's natural resources. I have paid for Mr. Leeb's newsletter for several years and have made money. He gives good advice and I think he's right. It's a very good read. Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.

A Bold Book and an Excellent Read

Review Date: 2008-05-10
This book is definitely an interesting read as it has an unorthodox approach to something that almost all Americans feel the effect of: rising oil prices.

Dr. Leeb is clearly a very intelligent individual and wrote this book about continually rising oil prices when oil was around $65/barrel in early 2006. That prediction alone is impressive and the book follows the believable premise that this trend will continue and oil will cost at least $200/barrel in the next few years.

He gives us reasons why this coming crisis is being ignored, where we should invest in the next few years, and what effects this economic collapse will have on the economy and the world if it is still ignored. The book also covers some basic economic concepts such as inflation and outlines possible US government action to control and deal with this crisis as it unfolds.

The book is easy to read and written on a level that I could easily understand. I recommend it for the ideas it gives and for the several points that really made me think and consider our current economic status and what it might lead to in the near future.

I agree with most of Dr. Leeb's positions in what he addresses in this book, namely that the situation he outlines for the future will come to pass if nothing is done. I also realize that he is writing from a well-informed and experienced position, and that is worthy of respect from everyone. There were only a few things I didn't understand about the book.

First, this book is repetitive. There are maybe 50 pages of content in a 196 page book. He could have written an excellent small booklet or a series in a trade journal but seemingly opted to make the same project into a full book. The information is good; the presentation is much too long.

Secondly, he has a chapter entitled "Planning for Survival: Alternatives to Oil." This chapter outlines several well-known alternative energy solutions (natural gas, nuclear, wind, etc.) and boldly states "One of the most promising alternative energies...is wind" (page 133). This sounds fair enough, but if you add up his numbers on page 143 you would find that (by his estimates) we need 800,000 windmills in the US to provide us with all our electricity needs. Dr. Leeb implies that we should commit to this immediately, so probably he has already invested in wind power. I am not an engineer, but I have seen these windmills and I cannot imagine where you could put them or where the concrete, metal and labor (and energy!) resources required for a construction project like this would come from. I may be wrong, but I would have liked to see more evidence to back up the statement that wind is the best alternative energy available.

Despite these points, I think this is a really excellent book. I am more of an optimist than Dr. Leeb, and I think that when the crisis hits it will not be with such doomsday results that he outlines. Humans, the most adaptive creatures on earth, will figure out a way to deal with it that will minimize damage and we will recover even if it takes a few years with a slower world economy. However, his advice and non-conformist ideas are excellent and only time will tell the true impact as the economic and political status of the world seems to change yearly. In the meantime, I recommend reading this book and considering the financial advice and predictions that Dr. Leeb offers. It should not take long to read and I learned a lot that I would never have thought of before.

This is Important Stuff - We all wish that the world would stay under control, but reality will not be denied. Leeb is to be admired for saying it like it is. It's too bad that most Americans will not read this book - a cold logical look at what the future will look like.

I just happened to pick up the audio-book version of this book before thumbing through the hardcover.

This is first book of its kind that I've found that recommends stock options and an investment strategy for surviving the coming economic collapse. Dr. Leeb presents a strong argument for getting your finances in order. The basis for his book is the 1970's, a period very familiar to me, the time of "Stag-flation." I believe that with a few adjustments for problems he missed ¯ academic studies such as these tend to be rich in details and highly accurate but myopic. Dr. Leeb is primarily worried about inflation. The basis of his book is that the government will flood the market with dollars to counter the political fallout from collapsing demand. Maybe so, if it can.

Unfortunately, when this book was written, the mortgage crisis had just begun to show up in the media. Where will the money come from when the government is broke? I'm just guessing but I think you'd want to hedge a little more towards deflation than inflation and Dr. Leeb takes this into account.

Another minor flaw with the book is a lack of appreciation for the economic impact of the environment. He sees this as a problem that is 50 years away. As a practical environmentalist and a chemical engineer, I see it as a problem we must address within 10 years or so or we, as a species, will be dead. The American Chemistry Society (ACS) has provided ample warning for years about the rising unhealthiness of the food we eat -- like the warnings to everyone, not just pregnant women, not to eat fish (those on the top of their food chains).

The EPA now warns pregnant women not to eat shark, mackerel, tilefish, albacore (white) tuna or swordfish because of mercury; in truth, their credibility is not gold leaf anymore. Better advice would be to not eat walleye, salmon, pike, or trout and this goes for wild fish and farm-raised. The reason why government agencies such as these are not reliable is because of protection of government interests, such as Canadian and American commercial fishing. But, that, to use an old author's ploy is another story.

Dr. Leeb misses this converging phenomena. One reason may be the cost of damage to the environment. This cost is largely un-measureable and is usually ignored in economic analysis. I should know, I'm a engineer. We have trouble accounting for inflation in our calculations let alone the economic impact of improvements in quality, safety or the environment. I am sure that DuPont would have taken more care not to destroy the Chesapeake Bay if they could have weighed the economic cost. Certainly, the government accountants would have reminded them with stiff penalties.

Or, maybe, Dr. Leeb assumes that if the effect of the environment is severe enough, the health system will collapse altogether. Imagine a world without health care. He alludes to this towards the end of the book.

All in all, this is an excellent book. Like the others in this genre, he warns about inflation. I think Dr. Leeb has chosen the correct path by avoiding the temptation to tell you how bad it could get and focusing on how you can improve your lot during the collapse. At least, Dr. Leeb has some investment ideas for your survival.

I own most of Jean Pares recipe books and use them all everyday. The recipes can be made with common, everyday ingredients. The books are easy to follow with step by step instruction. The only problem I had with Soups and Sandwiches is that some of the soup recipes use a store bought can of soup as its base. I prefer to cook from scratch.

I found many of the therapists' comments unexpected and refreshing. It helped the couples to look at their situations differently, and gave them hope. Being in a group with other couples felt awkward to the participants in the beginning, but turned out to be very beneficial to each of them - a sort of positive peer pressure. The continuing sessions over a short-period of time (rather than short sessions over a long period of time) helped reveal personality traits and made it more difficult to hide emotions.

Obviously the DNA of Relationships principles were applied. But you will need to get their other book to have the principles spelled out. I did not read the other book first and still got a wealth of information out of this book.

scriptural guidance to avoid becoming a doormat

Very useful ideas, very powerful book. I enjoyed getting a "fly on the wall" perspective on what group couples' counseling might look like -- makes for an engaging read, which is a refreshing change from many self-help books.

In a lot of ways, the best-fitting program for a marriage that's in trouble probably depends on what the core problems are. Gary Chapman's "The Five Love Languages" is a great book, but probably more helpful for marriage enrichment than for marriages in crisis. Willard Harley's "His Needs, Her Needs" and related materials can be for enrichment or a marriage in crisis. (Harley's work is very good too!) "The DNA of Relationships for Couples" speaks to marriages in crisis -- and while the messages would be helpful for marriage enrichment too, the stories are about marriages that are in significant distress. I'm not sure how I would respond to the book if I were in the midst of a marriage that was rolling merrily along.

The ideas about the Fear Dance, as well as scriptural mandates for self-care were very thought provoking and eye-opening for me. It's a scripturally-guided perspective that comes at marriage from a perspective I really did not expect. Instead of talking about endlessly sacrificial love, they do a good job of pointing out where "sacrificial" runs the risk of turning into "doormat." They make a good case for valuing oneself as a child of God, and setting appropriate, God-honoring boundaries in relationships when needed. They also do a nice job of emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in marriage. The doormat message was one I personally needed to hear, and that makes the DNA book a very good fit for me.

I've read many, many marriage books, but none has compared to the depth, wisdom, hope and authenticity of this book. Because of the expertly woven stories, I identified with each couple's struggles. I cheered when they realized where they'd gotten off track and I cringed as I saw myself in their desperation. And through it all, I learned amazing truths about myself, my God and my marriage.

Everywhere I go, I hear about the impact of this book and the principles within. If you're struggling in your marriage, longing to see relational health, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this book. Dr. Bob Paul and Dr. Greg Smalley's proven and surprising insight will, if you let it, revolutionize the way you interact with and love your spouse.

Bought this as a gift and he loved it. A great collection of info and photos on the one and only Big Daddy. Great shots of him througout his life and career, up and down, (my favorite shot was of him sleeping on the side of the road beside his car on his way to a show). Lots of photos of his wild cars. Great book for all his fans.

For me, a guy, who lived and breathed the hot rod, surf and music scene of the 60's, this book brings back a necessary component of the time. Relive and remember the essence of the time through Ed Roth who's artwork and cars seemed to be on the tip of everyone's tongue. We all knew the "Rat Fink" and we all knew "Big Daddy". Now he lives forever in this definitive work.

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was a real renaissance man of the 1960s: creator of Rat Fink, builder of creative custom cars, and a Mormon beatnick who refused to fit in anyone's mold. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth: His Life, Time, Cars, and Art is an engaging and informative biography that charts his rise to fame in general and his skills building custom cars in particular, and comes from an author who met Ed in the mid-1970s and regularly covered his exploits. Nearly 300 photos - many new to this collection-charts his creations and his art, and will appeal to any who know his name.

A thought-provoking treatise on creativity and intellectual rights

I may not have been McCartney's target audience here; I buy knockoffs of things all the time. Or should I say, bought. I always figured that you simply couldn't protect intellectual property if there was a cheap way of someone stealing it and making a profit, and furthermore, why should I pay a huge premium for the real thing just to have some brand name on it?

But reading this book was a great experience for me; Sarah personalizes exactly who and how it hurts for me to purchase knockoffs of nearly any product. She talks about exactly what pushes our brand buttons and tries to show us that the things pushing our brand buttons are often worth paying extra for (to buy the real thing). She also makes the point that though counterfeits and knockoffs are a cheap way of buying instant chic - we can try the newest styles at bargain bin prices - they not only compromise us morally but in many cases don't really satisfy the things that we are initially attracted to in the styles or designs. They can be cheaply made or of low-quality fabric, neither of which is really satisfying to wear, and in addition, many of the people who'd think you were cool for wearing something so stylish would know that you had a knockoff by the poor workmanship.

One of the most convincing points for me is the argument that the more of everything we buy, knockoffs and fakes, the more we have to work to pay for these items, and the less time we as individuals have to develop and enjoy our own creativity, and the experiences involved in making our own interesting clothing/ clothing combinations and exploring our creativity in other ways. She makes the point that the trade in knockoffs going on at stores contributes to all of us looking alike in a lot of ways, and that true creativity in design is becoming less common as people realize they can make money off other people's ideas without ever coming up with anything new themselves.

I don't want us all to look and dress alike, and so this was especially thought-provoking to think that maybe there is another model for thinking about what to buy. Well-made, interesting designs from smaller craftspeople can be less expensive than branded items but still of very high quality, and everybody and their mother won't be wearing anything similar. Do-it-yourself and items from small vendors are becoming the new chic in my eyes. I can feel morally good about the choice to spurn items that steal intellectually from others while supporting small businesses and artists, and the kind of cutting-edge creativity that makes the world a more interesting and satisfying place.

I bought this book because I know Sarah's writing as Auntie Pamela from the Lush Times catalogue (Lush.com), and I love her fun and down-to-earth voice. This book was a satisfying read and gave me some philosophical things to chew on as well as some solid information about marketing, business, the trade in knockoffs, and what exactly is driving me to buy. Highly recommended.

This book was a great read. What was the most fascinating to me was reading about other cultures. Sarah McCartney, you can tell, put a lot of time and research into this work, and it really shines with each chapter. Never one to buy fakes myself, this book gave me even more reasons not to do so. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever questioned themselves when buying real or fake luxury goods.

I read this book with a great deal of interest; the scale of knockoffs is both amazing and alarming, and Sarah McCartney's analysis is insightful without being preachy. Books on esoteric subjects are not always a good read, but this one is, and I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in economics or fashion, humanities or capitalism.

Thought-provoking as well as informational

For those of us who wonder why on earth anyone would buy cheaply-made Gucci knockoffs - much less who would actually go to the trouble of creating one - this book is a revelation. Ms. McCartney goes beyond the obvious motivations of greed and envy to present us the cause and effect of a not-quite-Louis-Vuitton fashion world. It's an interesting, well-paced book that I heartily recommend.
