great wreck divers guide
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-08
This book has a ton of info on hundereds of dive sites in the great lakes! Primarily focuses on the fascinating wrecks that can be found in the lakes.
Major sites have a small blurb about the history of the wreck and a small black/white picture or map/drawing. LORAN location and lats and lons. Suggested dive profiles.
All sites have a depth and suggested experience level for the dive and a brief discription. Sites are grouped together by location and international borders are ignored - great for both US and Canadian divers! Some info about dive operators and accomodations to certain areas.
Overall, an excellent resource! I'll never be able to dive all the interesting sites in one lifetime. Provides enough info to spark a desire to explore the site but doesn't give too much away.

Couldn't put it down!

I read almost every book on the history of underwater exploration that is released, but this one was one that I couldn't put down. The author was part of or witness to some of the greatest moments in diving history and he tells abount them and some of the simpler moments with both humor and outstanding detail. I don't back as far as Albert Tillman does, but I can remember well the days when we were making equipment in our garages. It gave me great pleasure to see that even famous divers like Mr. Tillman have done some of the same stupid things that I did. One chapter of the book of particular interest was that short biographies of personal moments that he shared with other famous divers (not to mention famous actors, astronauts, and royalty). I would rate this book right up there with the adventure stories of Cousteau and Hass.

This is a great book for everyone that wants to get certified. It has lots of insteresting pictures. I really easy too understand to. It starts out with learning how to use a snorkel then it gets into deeper stuff like how to deal with a diver who has nitrogen narcosis. Its a great book for the price.

I bought this book a few weeks before I went on my first live-aboard trip, and what a tremendous help. The book reminded me of all the little details I would have forgotten otherwise. I actually physically used the checklists provided! Lots of good tips on where to go, choosing a live-aboard, tipping, meals and tons more.

This is, literally, one of the best books I've ever read. Beautifully written, full of adventure and information. Takes you back to the early days of the Calypso, and details the invention of underwater photography, archaeology, oil prospecting, bathyscaphe diving... the goodies just keep coming. A great world tour of the oceans both above and below, told through the words of oceanographers who are as much poets as scientists.

A Diver's Cookbook

Diving and Snorkeling in Belize is for divers - as a pictured cookbook is for hungry people... A very good source for divers, novice through advanced. The Book starts by covering some basics for every tourist to Belize, then moves on to an overview of Belize as a scuba-diver's wonder-world. Following, all sites are described explicitly. The site descriptions include easy-to-follow rankings of expertise required and characteristics, as depth, currents, visibility, etc., and directions to unique attractions in each site. Throughout, beautiful pictures enhance this coverage. The book definitely played a part in the decision to visit Belize, and for divers - is a recommended addition to the Lonely Planet reference to this region.

Excellent Overview of Little-Visited Sites

This book is an excellent and still pretty up-to-date book on PNG's many and varied dive sites. Good way to plan a dive trip, by seeing which site descriptions most appeal to you. PNG's dive sites are very variable; fabulous visibility one day can be down to murky on the next. Little explored country in terms of diving, new sites are being identified all the time. Hopefully they'll update the book in a few years to include the many sites not known at the time it was first published. All in all, a very helpful and thorough book.

The Most Spectacular Wreck Diving in the World
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.

I purchased this book as part of my preparation for a diving trip to Chuuk Lagoon. It contains many excellent colour photographs of wrecks, coral, artifacts and local inhabitants. I found the brief history that accompanies each of the wrecks featured especially interesting. Likewise the diagrams of some of the wrecks, along with their various inclinations on the lagoon floor is fascinating.

Invaluable for such a trip are the scale maps of the lagoon and islands which pinpoint the location of the wrecks and other major features/landmarks. Further, the book grades each of the featured sites using the Pisces Rating System for Dives & Divers and the Dive Site Icons, both of which I found gave an excellent feel for the dive.

Finally, the overview of the area given in the first few chapters is a nice touch. It contains a brief history of the area, information for travelling to Chuuk, items to bring, weather, food, shopping etc.

In this book, author Tim Rock, has improved greatly his previous work on Truk Lagoon in 1994. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to Chuuk, or, who simply wants to read about The Most Spectacular Wreck Diving in the World (In my opinion).

The photo's of Mutley scuba diving with the fish is really amazing. When my book arrived, Grandpa, who is 72, read it from cover to cover. It sits on our coffee table and everyone that picks it up is spellbound by the excellent photo's. To Mutley and his 'daddy' Gene, keep the books coming.
