This is a VERY COMPACT yoga book. I was actually surprised to see how small it is. The idea of doing yoga in your tent is a wonderful concept for us enthusiasts, however I'm not so sure the poses would would work on top of an air mattress, which I use in the tent.

Excellent! I keep giving away my copy!

I keep on buying new copies of this book to give away - and can't seem to keep a hold of the one that I have. Her instructions are clear and understandable - the routine is straightforward, and as the title says can easily be done on a sleeping bag - I have! Wonderful!

This is a fabulous book! Great for those with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS/CFS) or possibly others who have cognitive disabilities. Very simple to use. Straight-forward, list-driven instructions on one page; great photo of the pose on the page facing the instructions. Really easy to use - which is great for those who get overwhelmed by too many words! 'nuff said! ;-)

I will no longer lay idle in my tent, zipped up like an eskimo baby, waiting out bad weather. Here's a guide to keep you active and relaxed no matter where you are. This book contains easy to do Yoga poses, so easy that all you need is your body and the space in your tent, or even your sleeping bag! Let it rain!

Marty Appel has a delightful writing style which drew me into this book and I'm not a baseball fan particularly. Mike King Kelly was quite a guy but how could we possibly relate to him? Well, the author has done a great job at giving us a feeling for that time in history (late 1800s) by painting interesting pictures for us of those times and giving great analogies in the present day. Appel has a great sense of humor, and even though this book is a serious study of Mike Kelly, there's quite a few chuckles to be had. Great introduction to early baseball.

Marty Appel bring us a signficant book about 19th century baseball, of which not enough is written. This book is also one of 27 that The Easton Press has chosen in its deluxe library of the 27 top baseball books. This books belongs. Many of baseball's present day problems can be traced back to the late 1880's when both players and owners rangled over such concerns as high salaries and the reserve clause. This is also the story of Cap Anson of the Chicago White Stockings getting fed up and ridding himself of the alcohol abusers on the team, Kelly included. Consumption of alcohol by ballplayers was considered to be a sign of manliness (how sad) and many of the players of this time died young and poor. We don't have many books available on 19th century baseball worth your time, but Slide, Kelly, Slide and a few others such as Where They Ain't (Willie Keeler and the Baltimore Orioles) and A Clever Base-Ballist (John Montgomery Ward), are exceptions. Appel's book will not disappoint you.

Thank goodness for Marty Appel. It is amazing how many people today have absolutely no idea of who Mike "King" Kelly was. How many of them know of Buck Ewing, Old Hoss Radbourn, John Montgomery Ward, Kid Nichols, Cap Anson, Dan Brouthers, A.G. Spalding? Without Marty Appel, this era in baseball disappears forever. If you read this book very keenly and see between the lines, you will see a stunning similarity to today's baseball. The greed and politics of baseball were just as rooted back then as they are today. The future of baseball was actually rooted deep in the game of baseball back in the late 1800's. Well written and researched with what little information actually exists from that era. A little difficult in spots to keep interested, but a solid and must read just the same. A must read for historian buff's.

As a longtime Alaskan, I feel fortunate to have had both Doug and Jill in many courses. The book Snow sense is now the required reading material for all Nat'l Ski Patrol avalanche courses, and rightly so. I read it at the begining of every season. True avalanche professionals. If you ever have the chance, come to Alaska and take one of their courses.

"Here's a book you should have. I know, I know, everybody says that but this is different. This book lays out what avalanches are and how they happen, and it will save your life. Now notice I didn't say this is a book you should have on your bookshelf. This one should be in the top pocket of your pack. Simply put,"Snow Sense" is a pocket guide to safe snow travel, whether you're hiking, backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing, or mountaineering in high risk areas.

Avalanches don't simply explode out of nowhere. The ones that kill people are usually started by the victims. This book will teach you that such catastrophes are avoidable. You can learn to recognize and evaluate avalanche hazards. You can learn to "read" the snowpack, "read" the mountains, and save your skin. "Snow Sense" is a hands-on, explicit, clear-thinking, hard-hitting field guide that teaches you how. By studying the book's "bulls-eye" clues to snowpack stability, hardness tests, shear block tests, weather analysis, simple physics, and hazard checklists, you'll come away with all you need to know about avalanches and how to avoid being caught by one.

Read it once. Read it again. Take it into the field and practice the skills it teaches. Every time I hear of another avalanche-caused death in the Rockies, I wish the victim had read this book. The survivors must read it.

Great book outlining various ripping locations across North America. A bit outdated as it was published a decade ago, but def has its relevant points that are still valid. I still pull it off the shelf every time I plan a trip. It's very well laid out, organized, and to the point info. It even caters to all types of riding, pointing out the ropes from novice areas to the best spots to find the pow for those advanced riders. No riders handbook would be complete w/o a section on the night life. Once again, a must have for the rider who likes to explore the resorts around North America... or Europe in the European edition.

After 7 years of snowboarding, mostly in the rockies and the sierras, I have yet to find a more organized and informative snowboarding guide. This book breaks down the different mountainsbased on location(Pacific, Mountain West, East Coast, Alaska and Canada). And it breaks them down in terms of freeride, carving, freestyle(park riding)and backcountry. It also tells a good bit about the town lodging, restuarants and things to do.
It gives detail history of snow amounts and all the statistics of the mountain.
Oh yeh, if you are a visual person this is the book. Lots of pictures. It has a mini-map of all resorts slopes.

It should be required reading for anyone who is planning a snowboard trip. This book has taken me all over Vermont, Quebec, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. As a coach and someone who knows the personal dedication it takes to achieve life's goals, this book confirms everything I have done in my life and teach to the players on my team. This book is more than a book about hockey. It spells out a recipe for success in life, in and out of hockey(or any team sport for that matter). Every page has something that will inspire you and remind you what is important in life. I am making this book required reading for my team because it confirms everything I have ever said in the locker room and to parents. While this is one man's journey through life to the NHL, the story is one shared by most people in the struggle to define who they are as the grow up and to achieve the goals that they want.

As the father of a 9-year-old, I am delighted that my son has selected Dan Bylsma as one of his role models. Dan (Anaheim Mighty Ducks of the National Hockey League), and his dad's most recent collaborative literary achievement, "So You Want to Play in the NHL" is an honest and straight-forward discussion about Dan's uncompromised determination to become a professional hockey player, is set against a backdrop of objectivity and seemingly insurmountable odds. The book embodies a wonderful and powerful message, that hardword and determination are the cornerstones of personal, as well as professional success. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring young athletes, their coaches, and parents.

I actually bought this book from the Dan Bylsma WEB site. THe book was sent autographed to my son for this past Christmas. Most of the content is directed toward kids interested in playing hockey and who have questions from how do I do a certain drill to what if my parents are embarrasing me. My 8 year old enjoyed the book very much and continues to read it again and again. I still pick it up as well. If you haven't read the first book "So Your Son Want's to Play in the NHL", another great read.

As the father of a 9 year old son, I am proud that my child has selected Dan Bylsma as one of his role models. Dan and his father's latest collaborative literary achivement is an honest and straightforward study of the role of athletics in a young persons life. The fire and passion of competitive sports at the highest level, measured against a backdrop of incalculable odds of achieving professional success is difficult, if not seemingly impossible to reconcile. Nonetheless, Bylsma's book "So you want to play in the NHL" deserves commendation for having done just that. I strongly recommend this book to any parent or child who participates in sports and who is fortunate to have the courage to dream.

Hockey With A Purpose

Review Date: 2001-02-22
After receiving the book, I read it throughout the day as opportunity presented itself. I hated to put it down when I had other stuff to do. I felt like I was being forced to leave the game before it was over. I was enchanted by the book as if I'd never read it before, thrilled to play a role by helping with it and to be mentioned in this wonderful contribution to amateur hockey. As I read it, I thought about my roles as a father of a young player, as a coach, and as a coaching educator for USA Hockey. Two overwhelming thoughts came to mind as I read the printed version of the book. The truth conveyed by the material and the fact that at times I fall short of the goals conveyed by that truth from a child's perspective. Even though I speak or write about and teach many of these things quite often, I found myself addressing my mistakes in each of my roles as I read the book. But, even as I found myself addressing my mistakes, I was simultaneously using the ideas in the book to reaffirm many of my beliefs or to assimilate these ideas to address issues from a different perspective. And as stated in the book, perseverance is a key to success. Taking responsibility is a key to success. Learning from mistakes or failure is what truly makes you better. "So You Want To Play In The NHL" has given me additional impetus in my goal to constantly strive to improve as a father, a coach and a coaching educator. Thank you for taking the time to inspire even us older hockey guys with a book written for kids, because really, we are all still kids at heart! By addressing the issues from a kid's perspective for kids, I believe you have succeeded in reaching adults as well. The heart of this old kid is much better as a result of the time and effort you have taken to share your thoughts with the hockey world. This new book, "So You Want To Play In The NHL", for kids, and the existing book for adults, "So Your Son Wants To Play In The NHL", set the standards by which all of us in the sporting world should continually strive to achieve. I'll admit to not being a huge sports fan. But the broadcasting side can be fascinating. Len Berman's not exactly a household name in my area. I can see why some might mistake him for Marv Albert. Still, this book might lead to some checking out his work. Who knows, maybe one day I'll join that group. There are quite a lot of big names mentioned. Others may not be familar to most people. But Mr. Berman shares the human side of sports. Players, managers, and journalists get praised and criticized. There are many photos. Scattered through these pages are various not-so great moments. Many were featured on his Spanning The World segment. His day as commish of sports would involve a lot of changes. At times he gets serious. How do you talk about sports scores after a President resigns? What about games cancelled after 9/11? Don't forget the issue of race. I wanted to give this book 4 1/2 stars. There are some occasional bad words. I caught one definite goof. Mr. Berman got criticized when he suggested having America The Beautiful at sporting events. The flak occured due to the author, Irving Berlin. Both are Jewish. However, Mr. Berlin wrote God Bless America! Who got what wrong here? Still, I highly recommend this book. Have fun.

Len Berman has been the epitome of a professional sports broadcaster in Boston and New York for many years. This is exactly the kind of book you would expect from him. Great stories about many of the personalities that he has encountered over the years including Dwight Gooden, Pete Rose, Wilt Chamberlain, Joe Torre, Don Imus and many others. Berman also writes about sports role in society and its relation to the more important and sometimes tragic events of our time like 9-11. Book ends with a bang as Berman tells us what he would do if he was commissioner of sports for the day. A great read.

What a revelation! We have been told for years that our mind harnesses the power to overcome all. In Ross and Ronn's book, these principles are succinctly laid out with techniques and exercises directly related to race driving. I recognized many situations in my own racing and have used their exercises to improve my performance and confidence on the race track. This book is a must read for anyone in racing (or in life)who wants to ensure consistency. For those who think racing is all guts - you are missing the boat (or shall I say the checkered flag) by not reading this book! PS - They also have a wonderful seminar too!

In the olympics, studies have shown that those who practice mentally (visualization, psychology, self-talk, etc) as well as physically (actual physical training) do better than those who just grind it out on the training field.

In a sport where there is a fusion of man and machine, it is even more important to "Maximize Your Racine Performance" by adhering to the strategies such as what Ross Bentley has outlined.

If you're a driver who has reached a plataeu and can't seem to improve, there's a great likelihood that it's not more practice or track time that's needed -- but more mental practice. And that's cheaper, too!

Ross outlines great mental techniques in this book that are easy to follow, and very applicable to the sport of race car driving.

For a bigger picture on Mental Training, I urge to to also look at Ken Baum's The Mental Edge. Then make sure you have this book by Ross to have mental training specific to race car driving.

The read is well worth the price even if you never use the voodoo doll and spells.

The book says Squirrel Wars but it's a book about keeping other creatures out of your yard/garden as well. I was hoping it would be more comprehensive but since it gives tips on other creatures, I thought it had more value. Haven't gotten thru the whole book yet...too busy trying to salvage the bulbs that survived the squirrel attacks.

An invaluable book for any homeowner who's ever had problems with squirrels (enemy number one), rabbits, racoons, skunks, possums, deer, cats, rats, dogs, even birds, etc. Each section is dedicated to solving a problem with your animal of choice. And that's just it. It could have easily been called "skunk wars" or any other "animal wars" mentioned in this book. I guess he chose squirrels because they seem to be the most persistant animals to invade our backyard. They are truly clever. However, there's another "Squirrel Wars" book that deals with squirrels only, written in 1996, and the author's attempt to outwit them from raiding his birdfeeders. It's funny and serious. I highly recommend both Squirrel Wars. Enjoy while learning.

Finally, someone has published a guide to dealing with my backyard foes. For years, master gardners, nursery workers, etc. have told me there was absolutely nothing I could do to protect my flowerbeds and bird feeders from squirrels, pesky birds and roaming cats. After reading this book, I know what works and what doesn't. This book not only tells me what to do, I now have some good insight into what's going on in the minds of those little critters (I wish more authors would do this). Yeah!!

My only complaint: the title is a little misleading. I got this book so I could deal with squirrels. This book covers many more backyard critters than squirrels such as cats, crows, deer, raccoons, and so on.

Many favorite wildlife species wreck havoc on backyard gardens: Squirrel Wars tells how to solve a range of problems, from birds which raid bird feeders and squirrels which are geniuses at food to creatures which nest in chimneys and dig holes in lawns. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, skunks and opossums are covered, with some remedies more effective than others.

As a teacher, scout leader, camp counselor and parent I can't place enough importance on preparing kids for difficult situations that may happen to them in their real lives. Steve Longenecker's book not only prepares kids for some of the MOST difficult situations (being a first responder in an emergency), but it does so very effectively. In all my rolls in dealing with kids, I have realized how important it is to communicate with kids in an effective manner. Steve's book is written so that the reader can easily pass on its important points to kids in a way that they can understand. This is perhaps the greatest asset of this book. The concept that this book deals with, namely teaching kids how to respond to emergencies, is one that I am surprised isn't taught more widely. Steve Longenecker couldn't have written this book too soon!!

Steve's WEMA book is very informative for small and large adults. Being able to cope with an emergency situation is a skill that all should know. We have no idea when one of Steve's examples or a real life emergency may happen. Being able to help other's or even save a life is something that will stick with you forever. I have had two chances to save a life and this is a "high" feeling you will carry in your "Minds eye" until you die.
Two lives were saved by awareness of my surroundings and quick actions, as Steve emphasizes repeatly in this book. Thanks for thinking and sharing your knowledge with us Steve!

I've been a Falling Creek camper for three years taken SFL's(Steves)WEMA course multiple times, and spent countless hours with him. I've read both his WEMA books and gotten both autograhed by him. something he always writes in, I hope you'll never need the information.I htink that's wonderful.
The book is packed with captivating stories and information that you never know when you need.

This is a superb book, funny and illuminating and empowering. Kids love reading it, and they come away knowing how to keep themselves and their companions safer in the woods as well as in the street.

Camp counselors, scout leaders, teachers and parents should make this required reading for the kids in their care. You never know: One of those kids could end up saving YOUR life.

The illustrations are great too.

Imagine: a scout leader takes a group of young boys mountain biking. Their ride covers rough terrain, and leads them many miles from the trailhead. Without warning, the adult leader hits an exposed root in the middle of the trail. Unable to stop his bike in time, he is thrown over the handlebars and lands (head first) on the rocky trail.

Adults teach children to rely on their advice and emotional stability during emergency situations. However, sudden accidents often claim adult victims, and others occur when adults are not present. Therefore, kids must be prepared to assume responsibility in situations that require immediate action. What should the scouts do to help their leader in the case described above?

Steve Longenecker's Wilderness Emergency Medical Aid Book for Kids (and their Adults) provides an outstanding resource not only for kids but also for those who teach them. In many emergency situations, a lack of preparedness could lead to serious injury or death. Through role playing and discussion, Longenecker prepares kids to make the right decisions should these cases present themselves.

Though the book encourages people to seek first aid training, bandages and splints are not its primary focus. It shows how children can respond to numerous injuries that call for immediate action, including stopped breathing, severe bleeding, cerebrospinal injuries, broken bones, animal stings and bites, burns, and even accidental amputation. However, rather than discussing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), the book focuses on "little cpr," or the giving of comfort, protection, and reassurance to an accident victim. It also discusses the challenges of contacting and communicating with emergency personnel.

Longenecker, an experienced mountain guide, outdoor educator, and WEMA (Wilderness Emergency Medical Aid) instructor, wrote the book with both teachers and students in mind. His many "what if" games scattered throughout the book challenge adults and kids alike by engaging the reader in "thought experiments" in a manner reminiscent of Newton or Einstein. The book's many illustrations add a witty, thoughtful twist to his user-friendly writing style. He also peppers the book with curriculum suggestions for those who teach.

Longenecker says, "A medical emergency requires the constant making and modifying of choices. The material and exercises in this book are all about preparing children to make positive choices when that time comes" (19). His book gives kids (and adults) the confidence, knowledge, and wherewithal to make sound decisions in emergency situations.
