This is a wonderful compliation of short stories by a master story-teller. Chapralis captures the imagination of anglers world wide with the antics of a mouse, a hippo and truly speaks from the heart. I'm sorry he couldn't have autograhed my book.

This book is typical of John Riggs. It seems like you know who did it but the twists and turns make it uncertain as who is really the guilty party. And there's always a surprise at the end. His novels aren't long but easily merit a "hard to put it down" status. Give him a try but be prepared to want every book in this series of mysteries. Thank you.

Bellamy's employment of language is intoxicating: her sentences swirling around like smoke in a fat-bellied glass pipe, the body of her work crackling with the brilliance of a heretofore unknown substance. This modern-day vampire tale set in San Francisco pounds a stake in the heart of literary conventions--transcending form and sexual orientation--and sends my blood rushing. _The Letters of Mina Harker_ is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary literature.

The Lights at Death's Door
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-05
For over one hundred and fifty years the lighthouses of Door County, Wisconsin have kept mariners safe from harm on a hazardous coast. In fact, this county once had more lighthouses than any other in the country. This little book tells their tale and that of the men who kept the sacred trust of keeping those lights burning.

But, this book is also much more. It is an excellent introduction to the history of the peninsula from earliest European discovery, to the settlement of the Old North West, to the industrial boom days, to the modern day. Separate chapters are devoted to famous lighthouses in world history, as well as, the history of American lighthouses and the Lighthouse Service. There is also an excellent chapter on the history of shipping on the lakes with descriptions and illustrations of the types of vessels involved in hauling timber, stone, iron ore, passengers, and in fishing.

Virtually every surviving lighthouse is covered in this book with detailed data on location, access for viewing, history, construction and design, height of tower and of light above water level, and current ownership and administration. Excellent line drawings of the towers and associated buildings are provided (the architectural complexity and variation is remarkable.)

A section describing the current maritime museums, as well as functioning shipyards that offer tours, in the area is included in the back.

Note: "Range lights" are a set of lights that are lined up to indicate a safe channel (usually a taller aligned with a shorter beacon.)

Charles Webb is a poet of surprising versatility who has the sense and timing of the comedy stand-up performer but, just when one accepts his comedic self, touches one's heart with his thoughtful,"Inheritance" and "Chapel in the Pines" and "Floating Loin," as well as the title poem "Liver."

Collaboratively researched and written by the husband and wife team of Michael Squires (Professor of English, Virginia Tech) and Lynn K. Talbot Professor of Spanish, Roanoke College), Living At The Edge: A Biography Of D. H. Lawrence & Frieda Von Richthofen is a thoughtful and searching biography of one of literature's most famous married couples. The vital relationship between D.H. An excellent reference especially meant to complement literary collections of Lawrence's work, Living At The Edge is highly recommended reading for students of D.H. Great Book to see How She Truly lived her life
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1998-05-10
Gilman was a woman who went through much pain and suffering this book tells of her life being taken away from her by her Psychiatrist whom she hated for the rest of her. She speaks of being put on the Rest Cure for Post-Pardom Depression and how the doctors told her not to have anymore children. She speaks of her 8 years being locked up in her own house and in an insane asylum and she tells how her doctor put her on a regamine for the rest of her life. She also speaks of how she was not able to write and generate what she loved most--writing; because her doctor told her not too. She speaks of her publication of her first short stories and "The Yellow Wallpaper" and many others of her stories. She also or the author also speaks of how Gilman commits suicide in the end. It gets really depressing, but you really see how Psychologists thought in the 19th century and how a great writer had to live her life.
