This book first masterfully puts the events which transpired into their context in mid-19th century Wisconsin. It then sets out excerpts from the fascinating transcript of the murder trial of DuBay, a "half-breed" of high repute. The trial arose out of DuBay's killing of a Californian who moved into Wisconsin and took DuBay's land, with DuBay alleging self-defense. In addition to presenting a historical and colorful true factual story, the book is highly interesting for the insight it offers into the criminal justice system at this time.

You won't find much of the information in this book very easy to find anywhere else.

A close read of this book along with Gregory's book on T'sung-mi would surprise many people.

Glenn Trewartha gives the student, scientist, or casual weather enthusiast the perfect primer for an understanding of complex and confusing weather phenomina on this planet. His explanations are easy to read and understand; and are presented in a perfect regional mode so as to make any dilemma simple to solve.

Jane Hieb has done an excellent job researching this fair Midwestern town. I'll recommend this to anyone interested in this particular town's history, or anyone who might enjoy learning more about the hard work and sacrifices that everyday Americans face when trying to build a functioning community. Also, if you can get a hold of it, a must read is Jane Hieb's "Country Roads and Other Trecherous Paths." You may have to directly write the author to get a hold of it, but this hillarious collection of real life stories is well worth it. Some of the most enjoyable and heart warming non-fiction comes not from celebrities or politicians or New York Times bestselling authors but from hard working Americans who happen to have a great gift for writing. Get both of these books and you well surely treasure them.

This is really an excellent Civil War book written in 1905 by this Civil War veteran who was an officer throughout the entire war, first in the Eastern Theater in 1861, then in the Western Theater the following year, including his last campaigns in Sherman's armies, 14th Corps, all the way through Tennessee, Georgia, South and North Carolinas. His discharge was June 8, 1865, returning to Milwaukee as a brevet colonel. He also reviews the four best Civil War generals, Grant, Sherman, Thomas, and Sheridan. I highly recommend this for Civil War history readers.

The Elderberry Thicket is a great book that really can keep you reading late into the night. The story is about a girl who is growing up in Wisconsin in the late 1930's. She and her mother and her siblings have to learn to live without there father when he is suddenly fired from his job and has to move out west to look for employment. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in history and realistic fiction.

This book is packed full of great recipes from the best Inns in Wisconsin. Grace Howaniec does a very fine job of reviewing each of the wonderful places she has visted. I had read one of her columns in the Milwaukee Journal for Apple Pancake, which my husband and I had the opportunity to try at a B & B out in Spring Green, and it was out of this world. Grace makes these recipes very clear to follow and portions are all sized down to the family table, plus tips for leftovers.....BUT....will there be any? You will find lots of recipes to love in Encore Wisconsin.
