I have read a number of different books on where to fish in the Virginia area and loved the coverage here. I typically do not go back to the same place in the same season in order to spread the pressure. David's book provided a large number of options that allow the reader to go to a new place each week and still have places left over for the next season. He includes hatch charts, directions as well as local references on hotels and restaurants. The info is up to date with the 2006 revision. Good work!

Genealogies of West Virginia Families is a consolidation of all the family history articles to have appeared throughout the complete run of The West Virginia Historical Magazine Quarterly, from 1901 to 1905. Though a rich source of West Virginia genealogical data, this short-lived periodical is very scarce and, moreover, has never before been indexed. Clearfield Company is delighted to rectify both of these shortcomings by reprinting the genealogical meat of the magazine and by adding a complete name index of more than 5,000 entries. If your West Virginia ancestor came from one of the following main families, Genealogies of West Virginia Families is a work you won't want to overlook: Cameron, Clendinen, Doddridge, Duke, Elting-Shepherd, Hansford, Henderson, Henshaw, Hite, Houston, Lewis (Samuel and John), Lovell (Joseph), McWhorter (Henry and John), Miller, Morris (William), Nourse (James), Patrick (Virginia Harvie), Ruffner (Peter and Joseph), Rumsey (James), Shepherd, Stribling-Hereford, Teays, VanMeter, Van Metre-DuBois-Shepherd-Hite, and Yates-Aglionby.

THE GIBSON AND RELATED FAMILIES
With Related Families and with Royal Ancestors
THE GIBSON AND RELATED FAMILIES book traces several Gibson and some of their Related Families to some of the most famous of early European Royal Ancestors. See below for a Partial List of the Related Families. Some of the Related Families have special sections devoted to them and start very early. We begin the Jeffries Families in the 1600s, the Hall Families in 1700s, the Marsh families 1700s to current, the Peterson Families 1700s to 1900s, the Lowther families year 940 to late 1800s, the Coburn families in 1600s, the Means families in 1700s, the Kemper families in 1600s. See below for a longer list of the Related Families.
We have also included in the book some information we found during our researching that did not connect to our Gibson families. Some of these are; Thomas Gibson b1485 with five generations for him; John Gibson born early 1600s with five generations for him; Jonathan Gibson came to Virginia in 1720 with one generation for him; Nicholas Gibson who was born 1765 lived in West Virginia with several generations and lots of information about him.
The Gibson families in the book begin with William Gibson, died 1813 age 98, lived on Broad Run, Fauquier Co., VA. His occupation was a Weaver. We tell about his famous Royal Ancestors. His descendants moved to KY, Ohio, Western Virginia (WVa), and to many other states. His son William Jr. moved to KY. Many descendants of William Sr. are traced into the late 1900rds through church, courthouse and other records we found during our research trips to VA, WVa, Salt Lake City, Wash. DC.
The book is 5 ½ x 8 ½ in a blue and silver hard cover. A beautiful addition to your bookshelf. It is full of family information about these Gibson families and their related families. There are 728 pages of generations, genealogies, history, marriages into other families, their births, marriages, deaths, and many other things. We tell about some of the many places named in honor of those with the surname. It has facts about the origin of the surname. It has maps and information about some of the places they lived, showing the territory at the time they were living there.

Great memoir

The author describes her fascinating childhood in which her family moves around the country, following her father's dreams, staying ahead of law enforcement and bill collectors, and living the family's carefree attitude. While her father's dreams are what sustains the family for many years, slowly the four children become disillusioned as their father continually fails to provide all of the things he promises them. The father's inability to hold down a job and stay sober forces the family to live in destitution, and while the mother is continually writing and painting, this does not put food on the table. The four children learn to fend for themselves, take care of each other, and determine what is really important in their lives.
Quote: "As Brian and I watched, the hole for the Glass Castle's foundation slowly filled with garbage."
This was a really excellent memoir, which raised excellent questions about family, prioritization, dreams, reality, and the power of perseverance to overcome whatever challenges a person faces. The author relates her inner struggle when she wants desperately to believe in her father's big dreams, while having to scrounge in trash cans to find enough food. Although it was a bit slow in the beginning, things picked up rapidly. The book moved quickly, particularly because it is organized into short chapters. I thought the most significant portions related to the siblings holding together while they were growing up and making the most of difficult circumstances.

Hemingway, Bowles, Oderman

In this subtle, beautiful novel about the adventures and misadventures of four Americans in Granada and Morocco, Kevin Oderman steps nimbly in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway, Paul Bowles, Graham Greene, and other writers who have explored the exotic. What is perhaps most impressive about Oderman's book is its restraint. Even as it juxtaposes the hand-to-mouth life of a transsexual runaway with the lives of the privileged Americans, even as it considers the terminal illness of one of the American characters, it never veers into sentimentality. Even as it speeds toward a dramatic finale, it never succumbs to melodrama. And while Going could be called a thriller, it's also a thinking person's novel, with rewarding insights into, among many subjects, Art. Well worth the modest price of admission.

A Must For Researchers

As Continental forces and Virginia militia units were engaged in winning independence, American quartermasters and provisioners struggled to provide these units with all the necessities of life, from meals and guns to meat, fodder for horses, the horses themselves, firewood, and every other type of material. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution. These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. This series is an extremely important genealogical tool for searchers in Revolutionary-era materials.

I loved Hancock County (images of America)! The book is a great read and the pictures are extremely fun to check out. Local history can be a bit of a sticky wicket, the trick is to find the universal in the local. This book succeeds. If you are from this area and even slightly interested in history, buy this book. But I'm not from Hancock County and don't know much about this area, but I couldn't help but to see my great-great and great grandparents reflected in the pottery and steel workers reflected in this book. Sure, my family weren't pottery workers, but who among us didn't have laborours among our parent's parents or parent's parent's parents? Also, seeing the slow progress of the countryside from empty to industrial revolution chic was quite eye opening. It's important, though not always fun, to learn about history. This book makes it fun. Too often, I read history without really knowing what anything looked like. This book gives the flavor of the recent past.

In this pictorial history book the author truly captures the essence of Harper's Ferry, West Viriginia: bucolic and rustic scenery mixed with a violent past. The historic information in the captions enlighten the reader. A must-have for all those who visit or want to. A++ for entertaining and educational value. I really enjoyed the Jefferson Rock pictures as they remind me of happy family picnics.
For my guests I will have this book readily available for my day trip to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
