Tons of beautiful tracings of prehistoric art and some beautiful photographs. The tracings are just as exciting as the photographs. I've barely glanced at the text, but it's an art book - who reads em?

With 185 black-and-white figures and 36 color photographs, this book is a treasure trove of ancient art. Since I bought this book mostly for the graphics, I was well pleased. 176 pages total

My son loves this book

We found this at the library and it is the only one of it's kind I have ever seen. There are many books about going to school and preschool written for children but so far this is the only one I've found just for homeschoolers.

As we read this book my son kept piping in with "Hey, I do that." Although we know many homeschooling families and many of his friends are homeschooled, for some reason reading this in a book really excited him.

This is an enlightening book about a controversial subject!

A refreshing, insightful look at a day in the life of a homeschooler. The photography enhanced the lively style (and country life) of author, Julie Voetberg and her children. These are fortunate children, whose education includes the discovery of owl pellets (small blobs of bone and fur that the owl burps up after eating an animal) along a country path--the trail leading on to the library for books and science videos about owls. Fortunate children, indeed

This book is very informative and I really enjoyed reading the detailed descriptions of what the ledger drawings are believed to illustrate. There was one error (a typo?) regarding the year that Agent Charles Warner lost his position as agent (page 3 states 1881 and page 4 states 1882). Overall, this book gave me an appreciation for the perceptive eye that the Native chroniclers possessed. In a way, it helps give credence to their oral history.
Highly recommended.

Scott Thompson finds buried treasure

For anyone who likes the history of Native American Culture or military history, this book is an interesting find. The pictures found in the "cash book" by Mr. Thompson in 1990 illustrate a hidden viewpoint of the Nez Perce War. An unknown Indian warrior who traveled with the Nez Perce during their flight from the U.S. Army recorded some brilliant pictures in full color. These pictures, preserved by Indian Agent Charles Warner, are first shown to the public in this book. The pictures are not only full of cultural symbolism, but also portray historical figures. If you have interest in what happened in America's wars with the Indians, Chief Joseph, or the Pacific Northwest this book is worth looking into. I think that it is interesting just to see the pictures. Although the book is an academic publication with footnotes and all, it is well written and reads easily.

Fair-minded biography by Rockefeller's speechwriter

Review Date: 2008-02-26
Persico was Nelson Rockefeller's speechwriter for over a decade, and he sheds an even handed light on the former governer and Vice president. While it isn't always flattering, it strives to be fair. Moreover, Persico wrote the tome with a voice that most readers can relate to, which is an understandable awe at the vast resources of the Rockefeller family, and how the fortune is almost the rosetta stone of modern philanthropy. Beyond that, the book is an observation at the brilliance, generousity, obtuseness, egocentricity, & exasperating proclivities that made the late governer such an enigmatic figure. 90% of the material is from his election to governer onward, so you won't get much of his upbringing, but you'll have ample insight of those years to give the later years context. You'll see how his governership shaped NY State today, for better or worse. A very worthwhile read if Nelson or the Rockefellers interest you.

An Excellent Biography!

This was a very good writing of the life story of Nelson A.
Rockefeller. This book tells you of the wealth that Rockefeller was raised in. It then takes him to adulthood. His years of government service are well covered by the author. His four terms as the Governor of the state of New York are documented. His term as Vice-President of the United States is also in this
book. His being dropped from the Republican ticket is also told
in detail in this book. Rockefeller's life is well covered in this book. His service is unquestioned. You will also notice that
Rockefeller was the force that brought several good people to government service. Buy this book and read it. You will not be
dissapointed.

i saw this show in san francisco, and, as an artist, i was moved to silent reverie. the works are astonishing! whoever asssembled them deserves the thanks of anyone who has known the cold, stark beauty of winter and kept its memory in their souls. the artists who captured these moments in time are unmatched in contemporary painting. simply, i thank god for their lives and work. as one who still believes in the power of beauty upon the human spirit, i walked away from this show elevated and in awe. most particularly, i was enveloped by the works of gustave caillebotte --- so little known in america; so wondrous in the realization of his vision and his time. this show is serene. and this book comes close to reflecting its essence.

Fantastique!

Add this gem to your art book collection. As a screen printer, I have been increasingly seduced by the "winter palette". This wonderful volume compiles the best of the Impressionists as they, too, came to appreciate and explore the unique light, the effects of the weather, the shapes of hibernating nature, the muted hues, and the brooding melancholy of Effets de Neige.

A Period in History Every American Should Know About
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-19
This is the true story of a married couple who were sent to separate internment camps during World War II. It is a heart-wrenching, but heart-warming story, told mainly in his letters to her, as she was too depressed or too ill to write much of the time. All Americans should know the full details of this shameful time in our history. This book shows how a man can love his wife under any circumstance. Highly recommended!

In this simple, lovely paperback the life & times of two quiet, introspective pioneers come alive. They left the land of their birth for Seattle in America, arriving in the 1919. There they thrived within their community & their church. Until that fateful day when Iwao was snatched away shortly after Pearl Harbor. The World War II correspondence of this Issei couple throughout the dark years of their separate internments is the heart of this biography. Yet the memorabilia & superb black & white photographs of the NorthWest region give a greater insight into these quiet, devoted Americans. Truly an inspiring study in forgiveness & endurance. ........................

I was given the original hard back by my father Richard W. Walton Sr. (Great Grandson of Col. J.B. Walton, Commander in Chief of the Washington Artillery). Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down, finished it in the same afternoon. I would have enjoyed reading it over and over through the years, but could not due to the age and condition of the original (copyright, 1885) I have read everything that I could get my hands on involving the American Civil War. After reading this book, I feel that I owe thanks to William Miller Owen for taking me back in time. I felt the experience as if I were there. As I came to know the men of the Battalion from day one upon their depature from New Orleans enroute to Richmond VA., I felt remorse in reading of the death of so many of them.

Very well written account of the Washington Artllery's engagements during the Civil War. Describes all major actions from the First Battle of Bull Run to the final surrender at Appomatox. You feel so close to the lives of the troops; makes you marvel at all the struggles and hardships that were endured. A must read for all Civil War buffs. First published in 1885 by Ticknor and Company of Boston. Reissued in a limited edition that is an exact reproduction of the original, with a few additions (an Introduction by Kenneth Urquhart, three additional illustrations, and the list of present-day officers) by The Pelican Publishing Company of New Orleans, June 1964.

I was blessed to have dined this year at the Inn at Little Washington, which was an enchanting experience and a delight to all the senses. This book captures the experience well, and describes in detail why the place is a bargain at any price in terms of perceived value. I have given copies of this book to friends, so that they can begin to understand why I rave about the Inn. It is also a book about excellence, and should be mandatory reading for any who own a business or restaurant. The attention to detail and staff training should be instructive. This book, however, is not only for business owners and those who dine there, but should be a wonderful read for any lover of food. I also recommend the O'Connell book.

This is a delightful book that, while it includes recipes and numerous photographs, is primarily a history of the restaurant, and its owners' goal of dazzling every customer. Their success and world-wide recognition speaks for itself. Despite modest beginnings in rural Virginia, the owners have tried from the outset to provide not just outstanding food, but also a memorable dining event. The lengths to which they will go to accomplish this provides lively reading, and a compelling desire to share the experience.

Essential to read before you see these memorials
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-13
Fresh and original, "Inscriptions of a Nation" fills a hole in history and travel books. This slim volume contains the inscriptions on Washington, D.C.'s major monuments and memorials. The author, Clint Ensign, prefaces each featured memorial with a brief synopsis of the monument and why it or the person it commemorates is significant to our history. However, the book's main purpose is to present the inscriptions on these memorials.

By truly reading and understanding these passages, the purposes of the memorials become even clearer. Usually, a tourist doesn't have time to appreciate the wisdom and strength of Abraham Lincoln's words when confronted by his massive memorial, but careful study of the quotations leads to understanding that a monument is more than a massive statue, but rather a tribute to an idea.

Ensign admits this is not a comprehensive work, but the prominent monuments as of 1994 are featured here. This book sorely needs to be updated and put back in print.
