A story about the lost innocence of a family.

Salvador's Children by Lea Marenn is a HHHHH book that touches the soul. A new family tree By: Lindsay Rogan "I knew that my daughter was not only herself, not only Maria de Jesus. She was all the things that her parents were; and their parents, and theirs. She was the people from her village. She was the countryside where they gathered their food and washed their clothes. She was the flowers and grasses, the mountains and rivers she had known. She was the images and the stories. All that lived on in her, even when someone else was gone. I knew she would change, but somehow in her the past would become lodged. Somehow, I knew, all of it would live on." This passage from chapter 19 in Salvador's Children by Lea Mareen describes the entire journey of the book. Starting in the cruel heat of San Salvador, a female, North American college professor adopts eight year old Maria de Jesus and quickly learns that language is not the only barrier between them. Maria, having lived through the death of her parents, disappearance of two siblings, and responsibility of taking care of her younger brothers, is mature beyond her years and ready to tell her story. Slowly as she opens up to the narrator, her story of pain, poverty, love, happiness and joy are slowly brought to life creating a new dimension to her family portrait. Now that Maria has added her life to the picture, is there anyone left to carry on her history? Will her new mother understand the importance of family? Could she love Maria the way her mother did or would she also die, leaving Maria with another loss? Does she care enough to carry on the history of a different family? Was Maria a part of her family? Each of these questions plague Maria as the narrator learns more about her past, cops with Maria's fits of silence, and opens her heart to her new daughter. This book will teach the importance of communication, love and letting go of the fear of being unloved. A journey that begins on the first page, this book is bound to lasts forever in the heart.

Fall in Love with Brush-McCoy

I began collecting McCoy pottery over one year ago, and have several books already. This book however, is absolutely wonderful if you're into collecting the wonderful older lines by Brush-McCoy.

Great history given on the different lines. Super explanations throughout! Excellent pictures shown with many catalog reprints (the detail from these reprints is harder to see), but I have an older 1978 book as well, and these reprints are super! I don't even need the other book now!

I, also, had several pieces that had remained unidentified thru other sources, but found in this book! Great reference, super learning tool, and a seperate value guide (although I find it hard to use, as it keeps falling out of the book). I find myself looking through it over and over again, as the pictures are super, detail is great, and I just might find that piece of unmarked pottery from having this book handy! Now to get Book 2!

A wonderful encyclopedia for the collector...

This is a great book. It contains hundreds, perhaps thousands of images of this great art pottery. The photos cover everything from the jardinieres to garden ornaments, from kitchenware to novelty planters, and vases of all sorts. The Sanfords include a number of old catalog sheets, which give us some perspective on various lines, and a pricing guide in the back (which one needs to bear in mind will be affected by the impact online auctions have had on all reference works price lists.)

All in all this book is well worth the investment, especially if you are a fan of this wonderful pottery.

Best Test Prep... Ever
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-19
I usually don't rave about test prep books. They always seem to be filled with mistakes, and their effect on my scores have a history of being very minimal Anyway, I had to find a second SAT II to take, and decided on US History because I had taken a class way back in tenth grade, from which I remembered, I soon learned, almost nothing.
But with this book and about 2 months of some rather diligent studying, I got an 800 (after getting a 680 on my first US History practice test.) I can't sing the praises of the layout and content of this book enough. The numbers don't lie. I would bet that anyone could get a 750 just by reading the book through 3 or 4 times. (One minor quibble- it can go into a little too much detail, for instance listing a full page's worth of FDR's alphabet agencies, which were a pain to memorize and didn't show up on the test.) Your college application can't afford not to have great scores (well, mine can't.) And that's reason enough to get this book, ASAP.

Inspired by the future of our world

I saw this book sitting on a coffee table and read through it with my 1-yr old daughter. Understandably, it was advanced for her but I greatly enjoyed it. I am purchasing it now for my home and a couple of copies to give as gifts. I am completely inspired by the vision that children have of our world. I make efforts everyday to save and protect our environment and I am excited that we have children growing up that will teach us how to increase our efforts.

In an effort of full disclosure, my niece is one of the authors. She is quite modest about this accomplishment. When I saw it on a coffee table, I had to ask her about the book before she shared the story of being an author.

Carefully observed and simply expressed. Greek/Eng.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-11
Carefully oberved and simply expressed visions of the human condition.

Written mostly in a time of war and turmiol, the language is sparse and unflinching in its portrayal of everyday life. Each poem is set within lives discreetly lived in plain veiw of the observer. Yet with each superficial glimpse of the woman next door, or the hunter, or the deaf mute on the bus, the observer contemplates the roots of human perception and motivation and the interaction between the two. "Perhaps in this way he learned the deep secret not even he must reveal."

Small gestures can have monumental signficance in human interactions. This book will remind everyone who reads it of the poetry all around us: in the people we see on the street; in the passing phrase that takes its context in accidental occurences; in the gesture of a stranger standing far away.

This poetry reaffirms life in all its shades and colorings. It never forgets death is inevitable, but it reminds us there is a lot of poetry in between.

Detailed drawings and descriptions of plants in winter
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-13
This is a very unusual book. Reading it is like walking through a winter woods with a very knowledgeable botanist - plant lover who is willing to give you endless time to talk about plants, but without all the discomfort that involves. Black & white and color drawings by the author of hundreds of familiar and unusual wild plants of the Northeast United States, in the way they look in winter. (Usually one sees drawings only of spring, summer and fall foliage and flowers)
Detailed description and discussion of each plant are on the opposite page from each drawing.

Ohio poet David Young weaves together poetry, natural history, autobiography, and food in a wonderfully imagined and executed series of twelve monthly chapters, each rounded out with a gathering of recipes based on what's in season and influenced by an adept mingling of native ingredients and Italian technique. He'll send you out in search of wild mushrooms and inspire a hunt for his own well crafted poems and translations. Highly recommended.
