Conflict of Alternative Realities

This is a staggering commentary on the conflict of alternative realities as expressed in the visionary populism of Nietzsche and the homespun Americana and Unitarian-style individualism found in the writings of Emerson. The contrast of these two by the brilliant, but erratic, Professor Mikics IS one of the great misunderstood (not to mention unjustly ignored)intellects of our time and this book, so far, is his magnum opus.

magnificent art pottery that depicts a vanishing America

Rookwood Pottery from Cincinnati is highly collectible art pottery. Think Antiques Roadshow. Rookwood was founded about 125 years ago and was known for pottery that featured floral decoration.

That changed for a bit between the years of 1893 and 1903 when a new director of the pottery works tried to attract more male buyers. He decided to feature portraits of native Americans on pottery. The line was popular up until about 1900 then it was eventually discontinued.

These gorgeous Indian motifs were marvelously executed and are now highly sought after by collectors. There is also a political subtext to the story that will fascinate readers.

The book includes two highly compelling essays about the crossover between pottery and politics. The photos of the pottery from this collection are also superb. Highly recommended!

An Astonishing Novel

This book took me up by the first page and then steadily moved deeper and deeper, taking me into the lives of an immigrant Jewish family, generation by generation, and also into the social history of this country, as both family and country became more open to "outsiders" even while the challenges of being "safe" remained. Sometimes heartwrenching, because you see the reality of the lives at stake. Always an eye-opener! And the writing is beautiful.

Outstanding book. This is a well written biography about a compelling person. Reverdy Ransom was one of the most significant religious and social leaders of the 20th Century and Annetta Gomez-Jefferson does an excellent job of telling his story. Her historical as well as her personal perspective on the subject brings a richness to this biography that few others could have brought.

A story about the lost innocence of a family.

Salvador's Children by Lea Marenn is a HHHHH book that touches the soul. A new family tree By: Lindsay Rogan "I knew that my daughter was not only herself, not only Maria de Jesus. She was all the things that her parents were; and their parents, and theirs. She was the people from her village. She was the countryside where they gathered their food and washed their clothes. She was the flowers and grasses, the mountains and rivers she had known. She was the images and the stories. All that lived on in her, even when someone else was gone. I knew she would change, but somehow in her the past would become lodged. Somehow, I knew, all of it would live on." This passage from chapter 19 in Salvador's Children by Lea Mareen describes the entire journey of the book. Starting in the cruel heat of San Salvador, a female, North American college professor adopts eight year old Maria de Jesus and quickly learns that language is not the only barrier between them. Maria, having lived through the death of her parents, disappearance of two siblings, and responsibility of taking care of her younger brothers, is mature beyond her years and ready to tell her story. Slowly as she opens up to the narrator, her story of pain, poverty, love, happiness and joy are slowly brought to life creating a new dimension to her family portrait. Now that Maria has added her life to the picture, is there anyone left to carry on her history? Will her new mother understand the importance of family? Could she love Maria the way her mother did or would she also die, leaving Maria with another loss? Does she care enough to carry on the history of a different family? Was Maria a part of her family? Each of these questions plague Maria as the narrator learns more about her past, cops with Maria's fits of silence, and opens her heart to her new daughter. This book will teach the importance of communication, love and letting go of the fear of being unloved. A journey that begins on the first page, this book is bound to lasts forever in the heart.

Fall in Love with Brush-McCoy

I began collecting McCoy pottery over one year ago, and have several books already. This book however, is absolutely wonderful if you're into collecting the wonderful older lines by Brush-McCoy.

Great history given on the different lines. Super explanations throughout! Excellent pictures shown with many catalog reprints (the detail from these reprints is harder to see), but I have an older 1978 book as well, and these reprints are super! I don't even need the other book now!

I, also, had several pieces that had remained unidentified thru other sources, but found in this book! Great reference, super learning tool, and a seperate value guide (although I find it hard to use, as it keeps falling out of the book). I find myself looking through it over and over again, as the pictures are super, detail is great, and I just might find that piece of unmarked pottery from having this book handy! Now to get Book 2!

This is a great book. It contains hundreds, perhaps thousands of images of this great art pottery. The photos cover everything from the jardinieres to garden ornaments, from kitchenware to novelty planters, and vases of all sorts. The Sanfords include a number of old catalog sheets, which give us some perspective on various lines, and a pricing guide in the back (which one needs to bear in mind will be affected by the impact online auctions have had on all reference works price lists.)

All in all this book is well worth the investment, especially if you are a fan of this wonderful pottery.
