This is an unusual, beautiful entry in the world of cooking and cookbooks!

This hardcover volume features a color cover that will look as good on your coffee table as in your kitchen.

Enjoy Southern favorites such as dishes featuring Green Tomatoes and Vidalia Onions, and a recipe for curried shrimp for forty!

The section on "Moveable Feasts" includes Saint Timothy's Cake, and Wild Rice and Chicken Salad. Pork Barbecue for 50 men? It's there, along with Venison Burgundy, and Low Country Quail, in "Men's Gatherings."

From Receptions and Celebrations to "Deadly Sins" - it's all here: "Death by Chocolate," and "Bishop's Pudding", with recipes to serve from four to forty! Try the recipe for "Gumbo for a Crowd" - you'll have 60 quarts of delicious soup.

This volume even includes a heavenly choral blessing to be sung before meals by groups large and small.

"Past & Repast" also includes remembrances and photos from the life of Saint Paul's Church, the Mother Church of Augusta. Founded in 1750 by the Church of England, this Episcopal Church has been called "the symbol of Augusta" by noted historian Edward J. Cashin, who wrote the forward to the book.

Culinary sections are introduced with historical overviews from the Colonial Period, Post-Revolutionary Period, the Victorian Era, and "New beginnings", the period following the Great Fire of 1916 which consumed much of downtown Augusta.

Visit the Garden City and golf capital through the eyes of the more than 200 contributors to this beautiful book who capture the flavor of Augusta.

Veteran cookbook editor and published food critic Julie Badger has outdone herself with this one!

It is a pleasure to recommend this book. The Peculiar Democracy is an interesting survey of Southern Democrats. It makes important distinctions between populist-minded Jacksonians and elite-minded Bourbons. It points out that Jeffersonian ideals associated with yeoman farmers and self-reliance were not fulfilled by the arrogant slothfulness of the plantation aristocracy.

a must read for coaches
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I enjoyed this book not because I am a former bulldog but because of the inspiration and ideas it gave me as the coach of high level athletes. My college bound high school gymnasts seemed to be missing something that I just couldn't put my finger on. Suzanne's experience and suggestions of how to train both the body and mind of gymnasts as they enter into adulthood was just the inspiration and insight I was looking for.

Key to understanding the southern conservation movement
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-10
Pharsalia is a plantation located in piedmont Virginia - one of the best-documented sites of its kind thanks to papers and records left by the Massie family owners. These enable PHARSALIA to be presented here as a case study of how white southern plantation owners employed capitalistic methods to cement their ideas of independence. Any college-level holding strong in Southern history or regional environmental history will find PHARSALIA key to understanding the southern conservation movement as it follows its owners' agricultural pursuits and environmental assessments.

Every once in a while an author comes along who establishes themself in their genre as the definitive master.

detailed accounts, eye witness accounts, archive reference, original reports reproduced, period photographs of aircraft, targets etc.

everything you need is here in a large hardback reference.

An Artist's Love of Savannah
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-28
Chistopher Aristide Desbouillons Murphy (called Charles AD Murphy for most of his 71 years) was born in 1902 in Savannah, where he actively played and explored and walked throughout the city he would later depict and define through his art. His parents were interested in art and Chris Murphy, Jr. studied art in Savannah and New York.
At the time of this review, "Picturing Savannah" is a handsome accompaniment to the more than120 of Murphy's works from private and public collections now on exhibit at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah.
Murphy knew the city intimately, not ony its landmark buildings and outstanding architecture, but also the city at work, its more humble homes and its busy waterfront. He has portrayed all of this in his paintings and sketches and the book also includes a section of his portraits and still lifes.
It is Murphy's genuine love and respect for Savannah's many sides that allows him to capture the essence of this extraordinary southern city.
"Portraits of Savannah" is perfect for those now living in Savannah who love the city and its history and for those who have visited Savannah and wish to remember and re-capture the feel and allure of the city.
This book is a rare talisman of Savannah.
