Sweden Books

A rich variety of houses, some grander than the others, but all well-to-do peoples dwellings. Some of the manors featured aren't very well known even in Sweden, but they certainly deserve their place here. The few I do miss are featured in "The Swedish Room" e.i. Lay-out-wise it is by now perhaps a little dated, but the auther knows his subject very well and the accompaning photos are mostly marvellous. When a Swede writes on Swedish interiors the result is accurate as this book shows.

I am a decorative artist specializing in custom painted furniture for decorators and designers and have found this book to be a great resource and very helpful in my work.

This book is a treasure of neoclassicism in Sweden. It is supported by sensible (not gushy interior design talk) text and is logically sequenced.

The pictures and additional material is excellent; although the lighting in some of the photographs is less than perfect.

This is an inspirational reference for the topic.

Lily Lorenzen was my cousin. Third cousin five times removed or something like that. When I was an aspiring writer of about ten I went to a family reunion (where yes they served lutefisk eeeewwwww) and took the book and mom introduced me. I think she (Lily, not mom) must have been in her 70's or 80's then. A very very sweet lady. As I recall she did her best to talk to me as a semi peer. And she signed my book and now I can't find the thing.

~sigh~ I read that book so many times. I'm sure some of it was beyond me, but for a ten year-old "reader" it was highly readable and remained interesting as I grew older. Guess I'll have to break down and get a PB copy so at least I can read it again.

This fine book is a compilation of the life experiences of wonderful old and new traditions of the people in Sweden. The author dedicated her life to the instruction of Svenska (the Language) and the everyday happenings in Sweden. Though is was written several years ago, it is timeless and always in fashion. The tome is divided into many chapters that are easy to read in that myths and maps as well as traditions and festivities are all introduced to the reader. Ms. Lorenzen was my beloved teacher in Minnesota, where she taught at the University and the American-Swedish Institute for many years.

Although of no Swedish descent, I enjoyed this book thoroughly; since I like to read about different nationalities. But of course the Swedes must like it more for some of the language, which only they can understand.

This book is aweosme! it's a really fun read! Personaly I don't like to read but this book was great. I was a really fun book that you didn't want to put down. Pippi goes on lots of fun adventures and you learn a lot about her personality. She is a very funny character! I really think that you would love to read this book and other books by Lindgren

There is a crazy girl in this book! Pippy Longstocking is a very funny and a strong girl. Her friends are great. Her two best friends names' are Tommy and Annika.
Pippy loves buying things for kids, but never buys things for herself. She always says she's "rich as a troll." Pippy is really crazy; she even has a monkey as a pet. I love the books Pippy Goes On Board and Pippy Longstocking because they are full of excitement. I am just like Pippy, because she is always asking questions. I ask questions all of the time. I hope you will love them and read them too.

This book was a great novel, sequal to Pippi Longstocking, Pippi Goes On Board is an extremendous book. This book explained of Pippi and her friends venturing an island. If you live adventure stories, this is on book you do not want to miss! It's a very funny, adventerous, couraging, fun book! You will not be able to put the book down once you start reading it. This book is a favorite book of many childen in the United States. If you loved Pippi Longstocking, you'll love this great sequal. The beginning, middle, and end of the book are all great words! If you're kid doesn't like to read, or doesn't want to, sit down and read this book to them! They will enjoy this book more and more. Then they will want to start reading other books by Astrid Lindgren. Astrid Lindgren is a very good author. Read all of the favorite Pippi books. The author has done a great job!

This book is amazing. It leads one through a clearly stated and easy to follow discussion comparing two recent populist movements. But not only is it political theory, it also has possibly the most romantic dedication, from the author to his wife that has ever been written. A must read for any political enthusiast or even those that couldn't tell H. Ross Perot from an armadillo.

Probably the best book on Populism ever written

The author really took me there with him in his experiences. This is an older book, and I wish there were something more current like it. I know that things have changed since it was written. Also, being a woman, I would wish for something similar from a woman's cultural perspective and reality.

This book is wonderful -- it paints a vivid picture of modern Sampi, of both the landscape and the people. As well as the bugs and mice and smoke and wind. It is full of rich details and captivating anecdotes. It is never dull, never dry, but always beautiful and human. I loved every page.

This is a well written account of a thoughtful outsider's experiences and observations of the Sami reindeer herders. Dr Beach participates in the culture and gains insights into Sami ways and the problems they encounter. A great story of the realities and hardships of a culture under great pressure to change their way of life. The author did his research in the field and it resulted in excellent data unobtainable through other methods. Very enjoyable reading, I recommend it highly to those interested in culture in the far north.

This book is another example of Benno Thoma's excellent control of his technique. He uses only natural light, and his subjects tend not to be over-pumped models rather the younger 20ish (just) type of guy who is still shy and unsure, yet yearning to be outgoing.

Thoma collects all that and more from his subjects in the truly wonderful book. The appealing youthfulness, the searching eyes, the inspired poses. You will love this book, especially if you like monochrome pictures.

This is now one of my favorite male-nude photography books. It's right up there on my Top10 list. This may be because I'm of Swedish heritage, but I know that's not the real reason. The real reason is that this is an absolutely breathtaking photo album of erotic young-looking men photographed outdoors in the stunning landscape that is Sweden. These photographs take advantage of the natural soft light, course landscape, and bright sunlight that is part of the changing seasons in Sweden. It's amazing how well the models managed to stay relaxed, sensual & erotic looking during this cold & snowy winter photo shoot. It's very unusual to take images of nude male models under such harsh conditions and have the models still look erotic, sensual and happy at the same time. The sensuality, erotic mood, and sex appeal of each model does come across on each page of these black & white and color photographs. I think this photo album is as great as it is because of Benno Thoma and all of his handsome young models who made it possible through their positive interaction together. The scenic landscape & natural lighting were an added bonus.

Benno Thoma has worked in fashion and advertising photography for many years, and now is also well-known for his male nude photography. He has several male nude photography books to his credit including: "Young Companions" (1995), "Edition Euros #3", and "Somos Cubanos" (1998). These other photo books are awesome and true to his very creative and different style of photography, but I believe "Absolute Sweden" is my still my favorite. This is definitely a collector's item for your library, so make sure you get it before it's too late. I look forward to his next collection. Highly Recommended!

This is a wonderful book about a pattern of abandonment that goes throurgh the family. Beautifuly written and well described. This is a must read!

Este libro trata de una niña (Nora) a la que se le mueren los padres y se va a vivir con la tia de su papa que es la mas joven, ella tiene un hijo que se llama Dag con el que vive varias aventuras mientras que el la ayuda a descubrir quién y por que se estan comunicando con ella desde el pasado. Este es un libro buenísimo yo lo lei por primera vez a los 11 años, ahora tengo 14 y sigue siendo mi libro favorito.

Her books on each country are so wonderful-not just for viewing the photos for decorating ideas, but to get an all-around feel for that particular country's lifestyle and how to create it yourself. These are not just your average home decorating books, they make an excellent read as well. You won't be disappointed.

If you're into swedish country, you have to get this book! It's been my decorating bible! I love the beautiful photographs, but the text is even better. It explains the origins and purpose of the color palette, flooring, furniture, window treatments, room layouts, fabric and accessories used in ths style. It also discusses the influence of King Gustav, Carl Larsson and Josef Frank. The only part of this book I don't find useful is the recipe section. Other than that, I use this book constantly! It stays on my coffee table so I can browse through whenever I want.

Aside from the fact a reader will gain new appreciation for the Larssons and their art, a reason to purchase this book is that it is gorgeous. Good paper, excellent color reproductions, a nice heft. If you admire Larsson and Scandinavian culture, this book is a "must have."

I ordered this book sight-unseen as a gift, and thought "well, I like Carl Larsson's paintings, I'll get one for myself while I'm at it." I'm so glad I did! I realize that, before reading this delicious book, I had never really "seen" a Carl Larsson painting before. I didn't know that all those happy Swedish ninteenth-century domestic watercolor scenes actually documented Larsson's home and family, and I had no idea that his wife Karin was the creator of the fabrics, co-creator of the furniture and equal partner in what is not only a beautiful and original home environment, but one that has influenced interior design to this day, a hundred year later.

The text is written by different experts. I am not really sure that I come away from it with much sense of the Larssons' personalities in a detailed way, but the work speaks for itself and I consider this book to be more than just a valuable addition to my art library, but also as a great read and, even more -- a great "look".

Karl XI is one of my favourites in the Swedish history, Upton's biography gives a fair view of his too short lives. That without leaving his shortcomings as person and ruler. Karl XI may be less well known as his father Karl X Gustav and son Karl XII but far more interesting to study for a modern reader than the warriors. He stands in the history toghether with Gustav Vasa and Axel Oxenstierna as the builders of the early modern Swedish state.
I will recommend this book to everyone interested in Swedish or 17th century European history.

Swedes tend to jump from Charles X Gustav to his grandson Charles XII, forgetting Charles XI. But this was one of Sweden's greatest kings. He broke the aristocratic oligarchy, shored up Crown finances and reorganised the civil service, the army and the navy. Most of all, he kept the peace for 25 years when Sweden was large but poor and all its neighbours were anxious to lay their hands on choice parts of it. Many of his reforms lasted until well into the 20th century and some are still relevant today. Charles XII may have been glamorouos, but he foolishly lost an empire. Charles XI may have been a bore, but he preserved it all his life!
