Sweden Books

I am doing my undergraduate research on this woman, and I found this book to be extremely helpful. I loved reading every word and I couldn't put it down. The more I learned about this fantastic, bizarre woman in history, the more I wanted to know. Extensively researched with all of the major texts (as far as I can tell), its most definately an entertaining and informative book. Kudos to this first-time author!

This is a beautifully presented publication. Its padded hard cover and thick paper quality are matched by excellent colour photographs.

The choices of homes is good: from palaces to simple country cottages. The text for each home is limited because of space for translation into French and German, but its gives a personal background to each building and interior.

It has none of the frilly interiors or silly text that often accompanies the English versions of Scandinavian interior books.

It is an excellent companion to The Swedish Room, which gives a more comprehensive historical perspective.

It also contains a valuable introduction to Swedish history, culture and food.

Culture builders was one of the first anthropology books I read, and now some 6 years later, I still count it among the best ones I have read. Its importance to me was in the fact that it introduced me to the anthropology of lot of really interesting concepts: dirt, love, time, sex. Immediately after reading this book I ran out and got Mary Douglas's Purity and Danger. What Mary Douglas does for Leviticus, and in general, Culture Builders does for the 18th century Swedish middle-class. If you are interested in Douglas, then I would recommend this book for another application of her views.

I was checking out, and sure enough saw them there! These cards are pretty cool, great design and idea.

Years ago someone gave me a copy of The Nothingness Forest by this author and I was so impressed that I never forgot it. One day on a whim I did a search and discovered this little gem. Great short fiction on the human condition and especially at a certain age. Brings to mind Alice Monroe in the structure and detail.

To quote Aalto's 1940 obituary about Asplunds work: " his attempt to tie the threads of a living future with those of the living past"... cited by Anderson Todd, FAIA, Rice Univerity.

Very good history of Sweden covering the 400 years up to the 1920s. Emphasizes that Sweden has been always part of the larger European economy and culture. Details how Sweden was a good bit more backward than England & France a few hundred years ago. Goes some way toward explaining how it came to be prosperous in recent times. Recommended even if you're not interested in Sweden itself. This is an abridged version of a much larger work.

Reading this book will definately slap some respect and reality into people, especially the North American denizens.

Having some rules and ethics from other countries will disipline the world with cooperation and peace.

This is the second volume of The Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Like its predecessor, released in 1996, it deals with bands from the far side of fluffiness to the heavy edge of death/black metal, stretching out towards prog, blues and hardcore.

"Volume II" contains close to 1000 bands of which 660 are new entries and the rest are up-dates of bands from the first book. A chapter with names and discographies of the remaining 700 bands from the first edition is also featured. The information presented for each band includes hometown, members, biography, musical description and a discography including year, format, title, label and catalogue number. All of it topped off with nice photos and record covers.
