A Civilian's Interpretation
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-22
Is this book only for clinician's and other practicing therapists? No! Of course, they'll understand it on a level denied me because I lack their credentials, but it's still a "good read" for the lay public, if only for its poetic language. Surprisingly for a scholarly work such as this one there are no footnotes! However since all of the references are contained in the text the words flow without interruption. (There's a complete bibliography at the back of the book.)There are many other plusses such as wonderful graphics, ie, tables and diagrams, some of which were supplied by Dr. Plutchik's son, Roy. Plutchik covers the fundamental questions of "Who Am I?","What Are My Goals?", and "Fear Of Death". A major surprise was his assertion that emotions are not usually considered when dealing with patients/clients. In exploring the literature of psycho-therapy he found few instances where they were taken into account. (I, apparently, am one of the fortunate few whose emotions were considered by my psycho-therapist over 47 years ago.) The most interesting chapters to me were Chapter 8 which deals with existential issues and Chapter 9 which showed me why the "why" questions we often ask of others are not generally productive. You'll have to read the book yourself to discover the reason. In the Epilogue, on page 170, Dr. Plutchik writes, "Therapeutic communication is an extremely complex process, and there is still a great deal that is not known about how it works best. I hope that the ideas in this book stimulate others to continue the process of filling in the missing parts. I hope that the future mosaic will be a design full of beauty and elegance and powerful in its ability to affect human life." This book reveals the very humble man who, despite all his knowledge, he must be.

A Celebration of Emotions

This vibrant, compelling book is a celebration of emotions. Dr. Plutchik skillfully guides us through the theoretical underpinnings of the role of emotions in psychotherapy with brilliant clarity and simplicity. Using his psychoevolutionary model he blends solid theory with practical implications. In so doing, he demonstrates how a thrapist might use emotions and personality traits to affect change. He presents a vision of emotion that is exciting and that represents an elegant synthesis of the field. This gem of a book is an invaluable source for clinicians, students, researchers, and those with curiosity about the role of emotion in life.

A honeypot of sweet problems in geometry
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-23
Geometry is such a sweet science and this book is a honeypot. Ross Honsberger is one of the best in creating crafty, delightful problems. In reading this book, you will be amazed at how hard the problems appear when stated and how simple and elegant the proofs are.
Some topics are relatively obscure. I am sure that Honsberger is quite correct in stating that few modern mathematicians have heard of the symmedian point of a triangle. I certainly had not. However, the level of the material is such that even teachers of high school geometry will be able to find some suitable exercises. College instructors will find it essential. Problems are given at the end of each chapter and detailed solutions are included in an appendix.
It is hard to read this book and not understand why the Greeks were so captivated by geometry. Properly presented, as is done here, it is addictive.

Ross Honsberger presents the articles of modern euclidean geometric properties in a way that is easy to follow and understand. The method of proofs and development of ideas illustrate different solving strategies which is valuable for self-studying young students. With the help of simple diagrams, I found no difficulties in understanding the articles. Problems are well-graded with solutions are well-presented at the back. A MUST-READ book for students participating maths contest!

Below is a copy from the Table of Contents of this CD-ROM. If you were to buy all these books individually, it would cost maybe even a few hundred dollars. This is a great way to get all the Alice Bailey books and have the books even take up very little room. There is an index that allows you to research various subjects and you can also use all the search tools on a standard web browser (a browser is needed to access these files, since the html files).

Alice Bailey claims to have channeled information from a Tibetan Master and talks about the coming of the Maitreya Buddha back into the world. There are parallels between her writings and the Kalachakra teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly since both teachings have an elaborate Astrology behind them. Much of the information is practical and relates to how to work with spiritual energy.

I have found the teachings valuable. They are not perfect teachings. You have to use discernment to pick out what is useful and important. But the teachings have a more advanced and more mature flavor than many spiritual writings. Perhaps this is why many people still find them useful when much written during the same time has gotten a little dated. Every book AB wrote has an encouragement to take only what makes sense to the reader and let go of the rest.

This CD-ROM used to be freely given a while ago, but is now out of print. Maybe it will be reissued again.

I found this book to be a fabulous resource with many fantastic ideas for teachers to incorporate into their writing programs. I was amazed when my students showed such enthusiasm toward their writing assignment. More amazing was thier eagerness to share what they had written. Every writing teacher should own this book.

Inspired Writing Lessons

Essential Ingredients, by Sandra Worsham is filled with creative and specific lessons for teaching writing to our most reluctant learners. I purchased the book on Friday, read it over the weekend and was ready to present my first lesson to my retained third graders (most reluctant writers!) on Monday. My students were motivated by the imaginative (yet specific enough for them)ideas. A sixth grade colleague implemented Sandra's "Helping Circle"--her technique for revision--one day, and by the next all students were busy making their own revisions before coming to the "Helping Circle". Experienced teachers will certainly be inspired by the lessons, and new teachers will find a terrific model for creating a safe writing atmosphere while teaching the complete writing process. You will find actual student writing samples that are helpful in explaining key points. Sandra also shares her Southern Hospitality with her readers through Mama's recipes. The brownies are terrific! This is an important addition to an educator's professional library.

I bought all 6 of the Essentials of US History both to prepare for a state test and to use in the high school classes I'll be teaching. The books do an excellent job of creating a framework that clearly ties US events to the larger world stage. Unlike most history books that weigh the reader down in details, these concise books emphasize cause and effect. The reader is able to retain much more information because history is made a logical process rather than bits to be memorized.

Included: The Treaty of Tordesillas, The Spanish Conquistadores, English and French Beginnings, Gilbert-Raleigh-and the First English Attempts, Virginia, New France, New Netherlands, The Pilgrims at Plymouth, The Massachusetts Bay Colony, Life in the Colonies, Bacon's Rebellion, The Salem Witch Trials, The French and Indian War, Grenville and the Stamp Act, The Townshend Acts, The Return of Relative Peace, The Tea Act, The Intolerable Acts, THE WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE, THE CREATION OF NEW GOVERNMENTS ... much more.

More Amazonian bungling!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-18
Yet again the folks at Amazon have bungled matters. The other "review" of this book is in fact a review of (or a puff for) the Penn series of translations of Greek tragedy, not of Euripides' "Selected Fragmentary Plays," a scholarly edition offering Greek texts, English translations, and detailed notes on several of Euripides' fragmentary plays. It should also noted that the book in question is the recently published---and long-awaited---second volume of a work whose first volume appeared in 1995. Eventually, there will be a Loeb Classical Library edition of the major fragments of Euripides, but it is unlikely to replace these volumes of Collard et al., for their very full notes will remain invaluable.

Review Date: 2003-04-02
I went to Columbia, with the most prominent 'great books' curriculum still in existence. 25 years later, I'm finding myself re-reading and discussing many of the titles. The Penn Greek Drama series is a handsome library of new translations that give fresh takes on the classics. It's useful to have Euripides on the shelf when you return home from the recent bravura performance by Fiona Shaw as Medea--it settled an argument too on how it 'originally' ended.

If You Want to Be Creative

An outstanding book. It has given me new insights into creativity. Having read many books on the subject, I feel its consideration of Asian as well as Western ideas about creativity supplies a fresh perspective. It also taught me practical ways of improving my own work, an almost-finished historical novel about British India, the field of my Harvard Ph.D. in history.

Which brings me to another strength of the book: It is accessible to a non-psychologist like myself. It has a minimum of jargon, a fine bibliography, and lucid style.

The importance of creativity

Review Date: 2007-10-07
To solve our age-old problems we need new ways of thinking. Ruth Richard's very valuable collection of authors on everyday creativity show us that creativity is a force that is alive, fluid and interconnected with everything in the universe--it is truly revolutionary. It shows us new ways to think about the world and create a healthy future.
