Inventing the Grand Canyon

Imagine being able to invent one of the great natural wonders of the world. This was practically the opportunity of the first
park rangers to live at the canyon. Famous explorers and scientists had come and gone from the Grand Canyon and written their
reports, but they seldomed stayed there any length of time. The rangers who came with the establishment of Grand Canyon National
Park in 1919 were the first naturalists to live their lives there, and there was still plenty to explore, plenty of unknown
geology, biology, and botany. Within a few years after 1919 these rangers were writing down their discoveries and experiences
at the canyon, basically figuring out what this place was all about and how visitors could best experience it. 1919 was also
much closer to the age of Humboldt and Muir, when natural historians were adventurers and heroes and seers, expected to speak
both science and poetry. The "notes" in this book are the record of those first park naturalists as they come to terms with
a great natural wonder, and they are also notes in the sense of musical notes, a song of celebration.

If you love the Grand Canyon, you will be delighted with this selection of naturalists articles written in the first half
of the past century (!). Easy to read, most of the writing consisting of articles of a few lines to a few pages, you can open
the book anywhere and transport yourself on or below the rim, at a time when a lot fewer tourists visited the canyon. The book
is divided in three parts, Earth sciences (geology, river, sky and seasons), Life science (flora, fish, birds, mammals,) and
Human history (archaeology, ethnobotany and history). Nice little B&W drawings throughout the book, this is a very good complement
to a visit to the Grand Canyon or to any coffee table picture book on the Grand Canyon usually thin on writing.

Forget all those established names: Barron's, Princeton review, Kaplan...this book is written by less well-known publishers,
yet it definitely deserves its money. The French grammar is thouroughly explained, beginning from the very basics to the harder
parts. The vocabulary strictly relates to what is actually tested. The sections are well written and you are learning something
you won't be tested.
There are 6 tests which ressembled up to 95% the actual test. You can clearly rely on this book for the exam. I got 800 from the first shot! So, you're not going to regret having bought this book!!!

Take it from someone who was toiling down in the trenches chasing the bad guys, this book is a first hand account of how the
Reagan administration and Speaker Wright fiddled while the savings and loan crisis burned. It explains how, and why, the
government for years did not try to stop the corporate criminals who went on one of the largest financial crime sprees in
the history of the United States. This is an important work, not only for its historic value in explaining this particular
outbreak of white collar crime in the savings and loan industry, but also because it carefully lays out the patterns of control
fraud that will continue to recur in different corporate venues as long as people are willing to steal and lie to try and
gain an economic advantage. This should be required reading for every financial regulator in the United States. Alan Greenspan,
who recently argued that personal reputation in business practices should be more important than enforcing rules, should read
it twice (or as many times as it takes until Mr. Greenspan can remember why he trusted Charles Keating).

William Black's book, The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One,is on the one hand an act of courage, and to an excellent journey
into the morass and collapse of the Savings & Loan industry. Bill Black should know better than anyone, as he was one of the
inside attorney's trying to coral bankers gone wild on highly speculative ventures...
Mr. Black walks us down the chamber of horrors of the Savings & Loan collapse, and gives us a bird's eye view of bank corrupt.
What is most interesting is that Mr. Black finds the trends within in the industry itself, that it was actually CONTROL FRAUD were bankers, accountants, appraisers, bank executives and politicians colluded together to bring an already shaky and weak industry down. Everyone who wants to understand that the Savings & Loan was the first cracks in the empire, civilizations have always been brought down by poorly run fractional reserve fiat currency bankig systems.
What was the cry from people from Alan Greenspan was for more deregulation, and at the time, Greenspan, a banker who was with Morgan Stanley prior to his excellency/chairmanship/ at the Federal Reserve System, was that the Lincoln Savings & Loan, was one of the best run S&Ls in the country...
What resulted was deregulation and desupervision... Attorneys and accountants for hire, audits performed on Savings & Loans which made them look like a picture of financial health when in fact the S&L industry had terminal cancer...Massive insolvency, virtually no reserves, coverups, and famous politicians genuflecting to the Savings & Loan industry, the Keating Five; John Glen, John McCain, Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, Donald Riegle..All pressuring the Bank Board for leniency...
Every American should read this book...this control fraud of the eighties in the Savings & Loan industry makes Enron look like a game of childrens marbles..We learn little, we remember little in this United States of Amnesia..
The Best Way To Rob A Bank Is to Own One, by William Black is a true sign that there is a crack in the American empire's treasury.. A recommended read if your really want to understand what happened in the Savings & Loan collapse, which the AMERICAN TAXPAYER WILL PAY FOR $200 BILLION OR MORE.
As Thomas Jefferson once said, "Banking Establishments Are More Dangerous Than Standing Armies." Hats off to Bill Black.

Excellent resource for cuisines of Caribbean Latino population

Review Date: 2008-07-29
Beyond Rice and Beans focuses on the Caribbean Latino population, composed of individuals from Puerto Rico, the Dominican
Republic, Cuba, and countries in Central and South America.
The book is written in both English and Spanish and begins with a simple overview of meal planning, discussing the differences between the types of carbohydrates and suggested serving sizes. Most helpful is a deeper explanation of the different cuisines of the Caribbean. Each section includes frequently asked questions, the most prominent foods included in each cuisine, and tips to reduce the fat and calories in many of the dishes highlighted.
The book also includes practice exercises to further understand the information discussed. The chapter titled "Putting Together Your Meal Plan" includes examples of how to individualize a meal plan by allowing the reader to participate in choosing what he or she already eats and incorporating it into a new meal plan.
The book is filled with helpful lists and tables of common foods eaten in the regions, utensils used in a Latin kitchen, and a practical list of what to do during holidays and special occasions. There are several chapters that described the fruits and vegetables of the Caribbean. The author describes the foods in great detail, giving pronunciation where applicable, providing some historical background about the food, and listing health tips as well as stories of when she lived in Cartagena, Columbia. The book includes a very personal touch, which makes it very easy to read, and the information is well researched and includes very practical information regarding the use of the foods and where to find them.
This is a wonderful book that provides excellent information regarding the many cuisines of the Caribbean Latino population for those who are already part of it or for those who want to learn more about it.

book hard to destroy and a great value.

My son loves this book. It's about his favorite cartoon Rescue Heroes and it has great action in it. Every page has a wheel
you can turn to make for action (ie: like the strobe of flashing lights, a cat being rescued, a boy throwing a basketball
toward the hoop, etc...) My son loves all of the different Rescue Heroes and this book has a lot of them in it. And who
doesn't love a happy ending!

this book is a must. It not only tells you where to go, it also gives you a detailed iteneray, tells you when to go, and
tells you how many day to plan for your trip. If that isn't enough, it refers you to other more detailed birding books to
help you plan your trip.

You see so many books on pet cats and dogs so it is refreshing to hear about a pet cow! As a preschool teacher and a lover
of kids books this is a lovely true story. Ultimately it will show kids that it's ok to think 'outside the box. Actually
it shows adults that as well! I personally wouldn't have thought of traveling with my cow but now I wonder, "well, why not?"
So now our grandchildren and other special kids in our life will be getting a copy of this book. It makes a great little thoughtful gift!
