Excellent diabetes diet/nutrition resource
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-28
This is an excellent book and a "must read" for everyone who has diabetes or who plans meals/shops/cooks for people with diabetes. I am a registered dietitian who works in an endocrine clinic and I also have a private nutrition practice. I recommend this book to all of my patients/clients with diabetes. So many people with diabetes think in terms of can't eat this or can't eat that. It's time to think about what you can eat as well as debunk the myth once and for all that people with diabetes can't eat any sugar. This book was updated in 2007 and contains everything you need to know to eat well to manage diabetes. Also covered in the book are the lastest summary recommendations of the American Diabetes Association's 2006 updated medical nutrition therapy guidelines.

" Must reading" for all diabetics and those that love them.

Toss that Sanford...
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-01
This antibiotic guide is so well-organized, up-to-date, and thorough that I've thrown away my Sanford. When in the ED I don't have time to fumble through hundreds of pages of Sanford tables looking for the right drug - here I have not only the drug, but the dosage and course in a matter of seconds. Other features like pregnancy contraindications and even average pill costs are included which makes me, and my patients, much happier. I never start a shift without it.

Superb quick reference for antibiotics

The reason you should buy this book is because it is USEFUL. I am a pediatric resident who works a lot of shifts in the ED. I have sanford, pharmacopia , and this book. I definitely use this book the most because it gives me the specific antibiotic and dose for a specific diagnosis. The parmacopia lists the meds while sanford is too nonspecfic and cumbersome to use. I was treating a case of pyelo the other day, fumbled through sanford for about 3-4 minutes and found 4 antibiotic abbreviations, which took me another minute to find out the names, only to find out they were not peds weight based. I quickly opened the EMRA guide and found my answer in 20 seconds. I love the book because it is quick, easy, and accurate. A must buy.

50th Anniversary Maui Cookbook

If you are really serious about the Local cuisine that has developed over the last 100 years in Hawaii by the interaction of japanese, chinese, korean, filipino, portuguese, and puerto rican immigrant laborers living in "the camps" with native Hawaiians and haole managers, this is the book. Or on the other hand, if you had a great "plate lunch" in Hawaii and want to know how to make chicken long rice, spam musubi, or yaki manju - pie crust cookies filled with sweet black beans - this is the book.
When I was born in 1950, my parents lived in Waikapu camp on Maui, where my father was a County Agricultural Extension Agent (semi-fresh off the Iowa farm by way of war in the South Pacific, with Marine training in Hawaii.) According to my Iowa farm mother, after one month she bought a rice pot and never looked back, except for Sunday dinners. The women and men who worked on the semi-yearly versions, of which this book is a compilation, were the friends and co-workers of my parents, and taught them to cook these recipes. This book contains a whole history of mutual assimilation and appreciation of the working-class "mixed plate" that is Hawaii "ono grinds."

My husband's family is from Maui so I have had the privilege of enjoying many of these recipes (what a blessing to have a husband who cooks!). At first, when I read through them I thought the combinations of ingredients sounded bizarre (Pacific Rim Cuisine meets Down Home Cooking), but after actually sampling dish after dish, I'm quite impressed. The recipes are all written by different people (a couple are from my husband's relatives) so there's tremendous variety. If you enjoy creative, experimental (i.e. mad scientist) type cooking, you'll have a lot of fun with this book...or if you just have a diversified palate (or want one), I highly recommend this book to satisfy your tastes. If you're curious about the recipes, email me and I'll send you a couple to try out.

Finally a book by an attorney who really knows the perils that accident victims face! A traffic accident can be so devastating to the victim and their families. They face critical decisions as to the medical care. Then they are forced to face the reality of insurance company greed. Knowing your rights is the first step to protecting those rights! Robert Kraft has created an essential tool for every driver in Texas. I am so glad I was lucky enough to order his book!

A Must Read

As a former insurance adjuster, I have read Mr. Kraft's book with interest. He provides insight and information that everyone in Texas should have. Buy this book before you are in an accident so you do not make one of these 7 mistakes. Give them to your friends and make sure they do not let the insurance companies take advantage of them. I strongly recommend this book to everyone in Texas!

A clear, informative, interesting travel guide

Elizabeth Morris's Travel Guide to Paris, written under the auspices of Thomas Cook, is a wonderful and clear guide to the neighborhoods, museums, churches and monuments of Paris. It includes several day excursions out of the city as well. I would like to see it restocked because I don't believe I have seen a clearer depiction of what Paris has to offer anywhere else. Ms. Morris's walking tours are superb and informative. It's just a really good resource.

Took three guides with us, this is the one we used.

Just got back from five days in Paris; this is the guidebook we referred to again and again. The walking tour approach to getting to know neighborhoods is great to read in advance, and great for choosing a hotel (Cheap Sleeps in Paris for that task). The book is small in size so easy to carry. The best of the lot.

For a genuine traveller, ready to explore new territories, this road atlas is the best I've used during my trips all across North America. From detailed charts of major cities (the map of Washington DC helped me a lot) to comprehensive maps of practically every area of interest, this atlas has been with me through thick and thin.
I do recommend it to everyone, ready to go out there and still feel safe.

Ireland AAA Spiral Guide
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-29
After purchasing several guide books to Ireland, I went back for another look. This spiral guide jumped out at me...and it was exactly what I need for all of the information needed for my trip to Ireland. It begins with "arriving at the airport" and continues with "your first two hours". The suggested itineraries are in terms of "one day, tow day...etc". Without knowing exactly how far each site it from another...it would be impossible to map out my trip. The photos are superb..suggested hotels, B & B's, pubs.....it is all there. Every time I buy a new travel guide...these spiral guides will be the ones I will order. Thanks for finally coming up with the perfect guide!

Just enough information...

Review Date: 2003-03-15
This was the book we used most when traveling around Ireland in 2001. We found it had just the right amount of information, not too much, not too little. It is designed for at-a-glance reading, with a convenient spiral binding and color maps on both end flaps. Each part of Ireland gets a "in 3 days" list of must-see attractions, well illustrated with color photographs, followed by a list of "at your leisure" activities for those who have more time or particular interests. Hotels, B&Bs and restaurants are included for each region, though these lists are limited. Then there is a section on "practicalities" - money, how to use phones, etc..., and even some history is thrown in. We found that this book helped us get around without having to wade through a lot of extraneous text. We plan to use it again this year to see the rest of Ireland.

Fascinating tale of russian capitalism

Review Date: 2007-05-06
it is sad what has happened to the average russian as far as their living standards and the difficulties...but a select few(the oligarchs) like Abramovich have learned how to exploit the situation...although one oligarch(the richest one) did end up in a russian prison...this book details how abramovich achieved and how he has managed to keep the wealth by being apolitical and staying on good terms with Putin. A very good read.

This book is the only bio on the mysterious russian Abramovich. It gives the best glimpse you can get into the man and how he built his empire(although you never exactly get told how). Great read on an impressive figure. I strongly recommend to this read for the ambitious.
