As the head teacher of a school for ADD/ADHD boys this book has served as the most valuable tool that I currently use. Many of our boys have been labeled ADD but in reality have never been made to persevere through challenges, or have never been made to complete a task with diligence. This book not only discusses practical ways to help all students of education, but it discusses the guiding principles behind all true education. America will never find the solution to its problems with education as long as its view of education is limited only to an intellectual study of science, math, verbal skills, and reasoning skills. As quoted in EDUACTION pg. 13, "Our ideas of education take too narrow and too low a range...It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. IT is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers."

Broadens Your View of Education

The book Education broadened my vision of what true education is really about.

This book has been in my library for years - from when I was a student in high school. Later when I had children, it became yet more important to me in developing guiding principles for their educational process.

I have found that I use Education as the standard to keep from wandering off track with trendy theories, or to lose sight of what true education is meant to be.

For parents, for expecting parents, for teachers and educators, for home schoolers - don't miss reading this book!

A Very Broad View of Education

This is the book to read if you want a broad, Bible-based view of education. For example, the first paragraph reads:

"Our ideas of education take too narrow and too low a range. There is need of a broader scope, a higher aim. True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come. "

There is much in this book for everyone who would like to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Historical, Pictorial Information of Brownsville and Matamoros
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-17
The historical information, both narrative and pictorial was eye opening for someone that was born and raised in the area. The stories of a port Bagdad all of a sudden became real. The accounts of the rise and fall of goverments in both sides of the border provide an exciting window to the past, a treasure of local history, a tale of two sister cities, which has not been dutifully explored by the locals. The accounts of steamboats on the Rio Grande and the impact they had on the economy of the area at first appeared surreal, yet the oportune historical photography of the 1860's and Thompson's accurate narratives transport the reader into the era.

Civil War And Revolution On The Rio Grande Frontier: A Narrative And Photographic History is the story of the bloody fighting that erupted in Zapata Country only days after the shots fired at Fort Sumter initiated the American Civil War. Featuring more than 125 vintage images taken by a skilled Prussian photographer Louis de Planque and his followers, Civil War And Revolution On The Rio Grande Frontier is a captivating illustrated history that relates the deadly toll of war. It covers not only the Civil War itself, but the guerilla fighting that continued long after the official end of the war, and the murderous raids and mercenary armies that pillaged both sides of the border, as well as the "justice" that would sometimes amount to indiscriminate hanging. A highly recommended contribution to American history and reference shelves.

A Keeper on My Nightstand

I am not a teacher, nor a poet. But, this book speaks to me! The first night I read the entire collection of poems. I related well to the bittersweet emotions one experiences while preparing for a major life change; in the author's case, retirement. I continually read 'Snow Day' to remind myself, a mother of two small children, to preserve my "downtime" for reconnecting with myself. "House cleaning and bill paying [can always] will wait awhile." This collection of poems is brilliant and heart-warming!

A Worthy Read

This is an engaging personal account of a high school teacher's thoughts and preparation on the eve of retirement captured in 25 tightly written, emotion-packed, image-rich poems. Apprehension collides with anticipation, nagging uncertainties, numerous possibilities:

"Sometimes my brain brews a mix of chemicals
That washes over me like a toxic tide.
What will I do if I made the wrong choice?
Retirement feels claustrophobic.
The attraction of being unfettered and free
Opposes the fear of isolation and loneliness
Like combatants in a wrestling match.
I am ambivalent."

Mr. Margolis' choice is met with conflicting advice; his brother counsels against retiring. It would be worthwhile reading for anyone contemplating retirement, especially so for those in the education profession.

Beyond his retirement dilemma, he offers a refreshing but perhaps antiquated philosophy on education:

"I believe children are responsible for their learning...
Homework is intended for students...
Children should adapt to teachers...
Schools can demand good behavior...
Sometimes, failure is the best teacher.
Students who are always propped-up will never
Grow strong enough to stand by themselves."

In his Introduction, Mr. Margolis posits that "I do not think of retirement as rest." One is naturally curious to see how his retirement evolved. Has he been as prolific as he was in his last year of teaching? Perhaps the author will offer a sequel addressing how he fared in retirement. Given his gift for expression, such an enterprise would be profitable for readers.

A Review of Charlie Margolis' Class Dismissed! A Teacher Says Goodbye

Review Date: 2007-04-03
As a poet myself, I am generally fascinated with the subject; nonetheless, at the present point in my life, my time is often not my own and I no longer have time for much pleasure reading. I am wary of the same old thing, and the new and the avante-garde is too often just rubbish repackaged as the unique or ultra-modern. Thus, if I'm going to take the time to read on my personal time, it had better have merit. One work I've recently made the time to peruse and I have enjoyed reading is Class Dismissed! A Teacher Says Goodbye. Charlie Margolis' collection is concise (just 25 poems), not overwhelming nor overly sentimental, and yet the topics examined are weighty and worthy of more than one read. Charlie's poems have a simplicity and forthrightness that is charming, and it is that overall charm that forces us to keep flipping the pages. Maybe it is that Charlie writes for his own soul, without the confines of anyone else's ideas of how poetry should be presented; in short, he is not out to impress what we might term the "poetry establishment." His words are directed less by form and function than by the free-flowing yet carefully-crafted "stream of consciousness" spirit of a man facing the closing of one door and the opening of numerous others. Still, Charlie is an artist. He was a teacher of art for many years, and Charlie has a respect for the craft of presentation, whether he is sharing his drawings, his photography or, in this case, his poetry. Charlie's poems speak to the heart of the reader; his lines are delicate and lyrical, passionate and dynamic, yet palpable. Class Dismissed! is accessible to a diverse audience, not necessarily only to teachers or to students. The Connecticut Education Association chose to publish Charlie's work likely because of Charlie's insight (as a CT public school teacher for 35 years) into facing the prospect of retirement. Charlie wrote the poems included here as a chronicle of his thoughts as he goes through his last year of teaching. He takes us through poetic examinations with titles such as "Indecision," "Open House," "Inservice Day," "Rules," "Unemployment Opportunity," "Counting the Days," "Days Like These," all leading up to the inevitable "Goodbye" and then "the Mourning After." Any teacher of any age can surely relate to the myriad of emotions Charlie faces during his last year of employment in the public schools. If you are a teacher, this is a book that deserves a place on your bookshelf. If you know someone who is heading to retirement, this work would be a very appropriate gift. If you think you too may have a retirement somewhere in your future, then you will surely relate to the themes of this book. I think Charlie has done a terrific job, and I encourage you to add his work to your home library.

Coach Allan Trimble has a 111-9 record and six consecutive Class 6A state championship titles. And his winning list goes on and on...

His book is a step by step guide on how to start and maintain a successfull football program.

This book covers the I-formation (power running game with a wide open passing attack) and a versatile multiple defensive system. Which, he used to win a 32-2 career playoff record and 25 consecutive playoff victories.

This book is very user friendly. Coach Trimble uses tons of pictures and diagrams. If you do not understand what he is talking about, all you have to do is look at the pictures. If you are looking for a play book, here it is. This book is great for youth to college level.

This is an excellent resource for trainers. It has many original exercises as well as clear guidance on what to do with the matierla. Also the introductory material gives a clear jargon-free explanation of the value of coaching. It is the best on the market, as far as I can see.

Very Valuable Material

I have found this material very valuable for developing managers as coaches. The big plus for me is that the exercises are mostly based around real work. I find that managers do not like artificial exercises that seem too disconnected from real work. Also the provision of the material for use in workshops is first rate. Finally I liked the fact that the authors have given guidance on how to put the materials together to produce a coherent workshop.

Practical resource

Review Date: 2002-04-05
This learning resource is an excellent addition to any developers' library of materials. It has clear, practical advice on how to develop effective coaches as well as a collection of fine exercises. The exercises are mostly based around real life practice. Too often these kinds of collections are full of exercises that look fun to do but are disconnected from work. This pack does not fall in to that trap. The exercises are graded - from easy to use to those that are more advanced. However the authors give very clear guidance on how to use them and show some examples of how the exercises could be put together to create workshops on different aspects of coaching.

I would recommend this pack unreservedly. It meets a real need - organizations desperately need to develop the coaching capability of their managers and this material will really fill a gap in the market.

I have been using this book a lot this year (2007-2008) and it has inspired me quite a bit. What particularly has inspired me is the strong case Judi makes for linking the library to literacy. It perhaps is a simple message in the introduction, but one that has guided me this year and given me a steady and sturdy focus. The best part of these lessons is that they dive deep into books, and the books she weaves her lessons around are some of the most wonderful out there.

Teachers Working Together

Review Date: 2008-02-26
In the day-to-day world of school library work, planning specific lessons is very time consuming. Judi has already done most of the planning for us in her book. All we need to do is revise her lesson plans a little and recruit a collaborating teacher to work with on the lessons. The lessons that have been included in this book are timely and relevant to the work that teacher librarians use. The format of the lessons make them easy to follow and implement. Because they tie so closely with the research skills that librarians are trying to review with students, they work very well. The suggested titles selected for use on reading nonfiction and note taking skills are fun and interesting. These books help motivate students to read the materials and we all know that great literature can be a key motivator! I would recommend Judi Moreillon's book to all teachers and teacher-librarians who need ideas and guidance for collaborative lesson planning to help make the greatest impact on student achievement.

Implementing even one lesson of Judi's with your classroom-teachers will instantly increase your credibility as an educator in your school's professional learning community.

Bosman is THE literary genius of South Africa. By turns, funny, ironic, sad and engry, he reveals all the foibles of South African rural Afrikaner life in the first half of the 20th century. If you can read only one South African writer, make it Bosman, you will be well rewarded.
The challenge is that Bosman is so little known outside South Africa, yet he remains perpetually in print in South Africa.

I grew up with Bosman on the family bookshelf, and launched into his tales of South African life at an early age - my family have teethed on his stories as he attended the same high school as my father, which therefore makes him almost part of the family I guess!

He gives a unique insight into the humour and pathos which characterised that country in the days before the second World War. Although he is best known for his short stories and poems of South African life, there are two of his book-length stories included in this Collection - Mafeking Road (perhaps my most favourite) and Cold Stone Jug (from his time spent in jail).

Some of the short stories are depressingly sad, but no matter whether they are sad or filled with humour - they do give you a realistic impression of what life was like in the years of apartheid in which he lived. Bosman has not always been popular with his fellow countrymen, mainly, I think, because of his ability to scratch below the veneer of their life-surface and expose their soft uderbelly. He pokes his finger with a toungue-in-cheek look at South African (mainly Afrikaans) life and relationships between the different colour and ethnic groups.

I was sad to learn that this book is out of print, as my copy is badly in need of replacing now ... might be worth a re-think by the publishers, perhaps!

This is an excellent, PRACTICAL, guide for communicating and negotiating in all facets of life. Imagine being a salesperson and receiving requests from 90% - 100% of seminar attendees for individual appointments (and closing on 90% of those!) This may sound unbelievable, but it's true. As a salesperson I was able to put many of the techniques in this book to immediate use. Beginning with the first chapter on becoming a better listener and better questioner, I have improved tremendously in my ability to hear what my clients and/or potential clients really are looking for - versus my preconceived ideas of what they should have. I have also seen a definite impact by using "Sensory Communication".

I feel this book is very easy to understand and non-intimidating. The concepts are readily put into practice and immediately useful. In hindsight, I wish I had had these communication skills many years ago as a public school teacher. I know I would have reached many more students!

This book is a must read for everyone.

A Communication and Negotiation Breakthrough

Review Date: 2000-06-20
I was really impressed by this innovative book. It will replace "Getting to Yes" as the reference guide for the negotiating industry. This book is practical and easy to use. The topical index and 21 step process are perfect when you are pressed for time and need a quick reminder. The alphabetical lists of tactics and countertactics are the first of their kind. Learning the tactics gives you the ability to identify the strategy of others, leaving you with the advantage. Also, the author's simple techniques to improving communication between employees and employers, spouses, and children is revolutionary. The ten steps to listening, covered in three pages, conveys what it takes other books chapters to address and it does it better. Just this chapter alone makes the book worthwhile. It makes listening easy. This book is also perfect for teaching, learning how to better communicate with customers or design marketing campaigns. This makes it essential to everyone in sales.

This book is an investment that you will want to read or refer to anytime you have to communicate a message or negotiate. It is well worth the price. It will pay for itself financially and personally, many times over and is designed for the novice as well as the expert. I have saved hundreds of dollars already and resolved family disputes with the help of this book. This author goes above and beyond by offering to answer any questions about the text for free after purchase, by accessing his website www.communicatenegotiate.com. I strongly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
