A comprehensive guide to Men's Health
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-14
There is a recent surge of interest in the subject of Men's Health as it is well- known that on average women live longer, and have lower rates of mortality from major diseases, excepting Alzheimer's. This comprehensive guide presents in its opening sections a guide to healthy living, including a detailed covering of such topics as diet, exercise, dealing with stress, avoiding risky behavior etc. The aim is to enable the reader to understand how to improve his own life- style. The second section provides a medical guide to the 'systems of the body'.
The work is not focused on simply teaching us to try and extend life but rather how to make our lives healthier and happier.
My sense is that almost every reader will find some tip here or there which will improve in some way their health.

This is an important book and a terrific guide to all health issues in a man's life. It answered every health question I had and more - on fitness, aging, and sexuality - and since this guide is from the American Medical Association, I know I can trust the information. I'll certainly recommend this guide to all the men I know and their families.

Developing a Care Plan

My brother and I take care of my eighty-year-old mother. She has
diabetic neuropathy and can't walk. But she's a good kid and
we take care of her. This book has helped. Although the object of the book at first seems to be to develop a care plan; it really is a book of primary skills that you need in caregiving.
The book is best because you are not overwhelmed with 465 ways
to help your loved one. This is a primary and basic skills book.
Buy this book if you are new at caregiving and don't know where to start. Because the American Medical Associarion wrote it, I imagine that it would be good for all caregivers to buy it. I just love this book. It's like a Boy Scout manual. It's user-friendly for your brain. And sometimes simplicity can do more good that needless complications and theories. Thank you and I wish you luck.

This book is a must-have for anyone responsible for realistic decision making about his/her ability to provide health care at home, as well as an excellent how-to guide for those who accept the inherent responsibilities of the caregiver. I consider it the one "best" guide of those available to meet the needs of the growing number of home caregivers.

There is simply no comparable text that is as comprehensive and readable. The reviews of both the basic science as well as the clinical literature is a remarkable feature, and is extremely well integrated.

Not Quite What I Expected, But Very Enjoyable
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-18
Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what I expected when I checked this out from the library, but it sounded interesting, so I thought I'd take a look. The story was fairly slow-going at first. In fact, I would say that it wasn't until about 1/2-way through the book that the plot actually got 'moving' so-to-speak. That's not to say that it wasn't interesting, it just seemed like there was lots of information that wasn't really connected to the plot. There were also times where I felt that certain scenes were written just to display the authors' historical knowledge, which isn't something I find particularly appealing in novels.

Also, although touted as a historical fantasy, this book is probably about 80% historical, 15% fantasy and 5% alternate reality. Honestly, if I had known nothing about Elizabethan England when I read this I would have been completely lost and, while reading, I still felt out of the loop occasionally. There were a lot of historical names and places, and it was difficult keeping them straight in my head, especially at the beginning. I can't really recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have at least a little previous knowledge of this time period, but I can say that it would be worth it to do some research for the sole purpose or reading it.

If you don't want to read about the time period, take a look at these two movies: Elizabeth w/ Cate Blanchett and Shakespeare in Love w/ Gwyneth Paltrow. They will give you a historical basis to work off of and both will give you most, if not all, of the names you need to know.

Historical fantasy as it should be!

Review Date: 1998-08-23
This is the best work of historical fantasy, and one of the best works of historical fiction, which I have ever read. Although the universe (an alternate history Elizabethan England where magic works and where Sydney and Marlow survived the events which killed them in our time line) is fantasy, the approach is basic science fiction "what if", extrapolated on a magical rather than physcial technology. Rather than overlaying modern concepts of magic onto their characters and history, the authors present magic as it was understood by the various classes of Tudor England, and in so doing create a world that feels like reality and avoid the one-dimensionality common to much contemporary fantasy. All this, and a great read, too.

Like fantasy? Like Elizabethan England? This is for you!

This is a very well-structured, well-written book set in an alternate version of Queen Elizabeth I's reign. The settings are finely drawn, the characters are engaging, and the plot is gripping. I reread this book about once a year just for the pleasure of it, and I snapped up this hardcover when it came out. If you like alternate history and fantasy, and don't mind them mixed together, read this book. If you just want to read about people living in Elizabethan England, read this book. And if you just have to have any book with Shakespeare as a character... you, too, have some reading ahead of you.

I still like it!

Review Date: 1999-03-12
I'm the cover illustrator, and I don't always like everything I read. Often, even if I liked a story the first time, I don't like it when I have to read it about the fifth time to check on the color of someone's shirt. Or I start noticing the lapses in historical detail or logic or characterization.

This book I still read for pleasure, even after I finished the cover. I read a lot of alternate history, and this surely ranks among the best.

Necessary Reading for the corrections officer
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-28
There are very few pertinent, to the point publications regarding the cons and games inmates will try to pull off on corrections officers. The veteran officer learns by trial and error, and over the course of years comes to know when a 'con' is being played on him/her. The rookie CO knows it will happen but not the lengths that an inmate will go to to work the con. As a new CO this book provided me with invaluable insight into the games that inmates will play and the cons they will try to use on a CO. I've only been in corrections a few months but have already been able to catch the prisoners trying to work me and get personal information. If I had not read this book, I may have given out too much personal info, thinking the inmates were just making conversation, or being friendly. My eyes have been opened and I'm much more careful with the info I divulge. I feel this book should be a must read for all CO's, new, veteran and those considering going into this field! It's very easy to read, does not weigh down with too much psychobabble, but is intersting and to the point. I highly recommend this book!

God bless the people who have been taken in by inmates trying to con you. I work in a prison and it is a daily part of life there. I wish I had read this book before starting. I think it does a good job of scaring you just enough to be more careful. I found myself marveling at the ingenuity behind some of the cons. If only they would put that much time, effort and thought into other things...But what is really scary is the number of people who have been taken in by them. The advice is practical and indispensible for anyone working in the corrections field. It is easy to think it won't happen to you, but it happens to many people each year. This well written and easy to read book helps you recognize the con and thus protect yourself against it. Real life examples and responses help make the teachings more concrete. It also offers a brief analysis of why inmates try to manipulate.

If you are a fan of "My Utmost for His Highest", you will love this book. It was written during World War 1 and it definitely goes into great depth about God and our relationship with Him during difficult times. Oswald uses the book of Job as an example of extreme trials and isolation.

This is a smaller book, broken up into short chapters which would make it an easy devotional type book.

The reading is not for the "faint-of-heart"; it contains some real wisdom and amazing depth.

Sometimes the healing process can hurt. Job was a person like us and all of us can see a little bit of Job in us. Chambers masterfully brings out the fact that suffering IS NOT the curse of God or because we have committed wrongs. Job is shown to be moving CLOSER to God in his tribulation rather than further from God [which some modern commentaries do]--suffering, trials and problems ARE a part of human existence and better is the person who will see God ABOVE it as they must travel through it.

Baffled to Fight Better is EXACTLY what postmoderns need to lessen the anger against God when rough times come. God is NOT the author of confusion.

Good Doctrine
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-07
I think Mr. Chambers's book is exciting because unlike most people, he actually read the book of Job. He uses Job's experiences not as a springboard in to general, vague, and platitudinous ramblings about suffering in general, but he discusses Job's suffering in specific. His loyalty and love of the text is reason enough to buy this book.

The book is divided up into several small lessons which takes several chapters and provides several paragraphs of commentary and sermons about the subject matter. I love Chambers's prose. It is powerful and direct. You do not get the marshmallow emoting, and greased truism that you would find in other books. If you do not know what good doctrine tastes like, buy this book an feast.

A last piece of advice: if you loved this book, and are electrified by chamber's power, then I strongly exhort you to buy the "Complete Works of Oswald Chambers." You will love running along side this man's mind and heart.

I found this book unexpectedly in Grandma's house, and, as I've decided to start reading more, I read it. It was terrific. Leslie told exactly how he felt, and he told it well enough that I felt it too. What happened to him may as well have happened to me, reading this book. His narration took me directly into the North Woods. And, once I was there, there was no lack of a story to keep me moving along. I watched the three cubs become his family; I watched them grow up; I watched them through fun and hard times. The forest was rich with detail and poignant occasions. I am staunchly against crying, but at the end I seriously thought about considering it, and that's not something that is easy to make me do. All in all, I have to say that you really need to get your hands on this book.
