I am already a person who "weaves the dream," so I got more out of this book in encouragement for not letting the day to day challenges of choosing to stay at home with my young son overwhelm my own need for creative reflection. I think DREAM WEAVING could be a terrific resource book for other women struggling to meet the demands of family and a creative soul. Susan Laubmeier

The wonderful insights in this book go straight to the heart of life. Emily L. VanLaeys presents an engaging story of her personal and spiritual development, set against the backdrop of compelling dreams. If ever you wondered about the importance of dreams, Emily's book provides dramatic testimony to how God speaks to us every night, and how our dreams help us to stay on course to fulfill our highest expression and good. - Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of DREAMWORK FOR THE SOUL and DREAMSPEAK: HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGES IN YOUR DREAMS

As far as quality of writing, this book is simple and easy to read. The writing is clear and descriptive. The stories about the author's life are vibrant and real. They bring a richness to the book and help the reader relate to what is going on with their own life. As far as dreams go, the interrpretations are very authentic and the author truly knows her stuff. Although the jacket cover may not catch your eye, the inside of the book is what counts and I think if you are a spritual seeking type of person you will enjoy this book!

Still the best, concise intro to e-learning

Although this book is now a few years old, it's still 100% applicable to the e-learning situation in today's workplace.

This book is still the most consise and most readable quick overview of e-learning. A busy person like me will find that an investment of less than a couple of hours will give you a comprehensive overview, and let you really understand the issues and the tradeoffs at stake.

After reading this, I feel I could hold my own in a discussion with experts that have years of experience.

Great practical guide to e-learning

Review Date: 2003-02-08
Henderson's book on e-learning is one of the most straight-forward, honest looks at e-learning that I have seen in recent years. His Q&A format allows the reader to quickly jump to points of interest without spending time on topics that do not pertain. As a person who has had to deal with business training "gone wrong", Henderson's suggestions for a successful e-learning environment make a lot of sense. As other reviewers have pointed out, I believe that this book and the concepts it describes will translate over to academia readily. Universities and Junior colleges would greatly benefit from taking a step back and focusing on the basics. Schools that are currently attempting online classes could be improved if the took to heart the topics that Henderson describes. Since his experience at IBM has given him a first hand look at how online learning can be done right, companies and learning institutes would be wise to pay attention to what he has to say.

By focusing on technical details, real-life cost, and the practicality of using learning on the web, the reader is able to quickly get up to speed on all the issues that must be considered when online training is attempted.

The practical guide was very useful; it was so easy to find information quickly that I am recommending it to my company's training division.

Allan Henderson's E-LEARNING tells how to make the most from an online learning environment. An exciting survey.

a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning

This book is a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning. The coverage is not deep, but very broad. This book tells what is e-learning all about; provides specific case studies and interviews with e-learning leaders; presents economical analysis; shows how to apply e-learning to your business; and describes the IBM 4-tier learning model.

However, I do not agree with the author's assertion that "Learning is work, not entertainment". A good learning is always pleasurable and amusing.

This title is easy to read, you may wade through it once and then keep it as your personal e-learning FAQ reference book.

Al Henderson does an excellent job of demystifying e-learning by describing the many facets of corporate e-learning in a style that is both informative and enjoyable. This book will appeal to a wide audience, whether the reader is new to e-learning or has spent many years in the field. The book can be used a reference, an introduction, or a guide to the capabilities and possibilities that e-learning has to offer. The case studies are useful in linking concepts to practical application. Readers will enjoy the perspectives on the future of e-learning provided by industry thought leaders.

If your organization is considering e-learning, I would recommend reading this book and reviewing the concepts with your stakeholders to ensure your are pursuing e-learning for the right reasons, and are approaching it with realistic expectations.

This book was given to me as a birthday gift from my mother-in-law. I absolutely love this book. There are many beautiful photos. There are places and subjects that I never knew had so much beauty. Because I am already a huge fan of art and architecture, it was fun to learn about the many influences to Filipino style. I liked it so much that I had to buy a copy for my father (Born in Las Pinas - Metro Manila, Philippines)

This book is a great book for young Filipino Americans who need some inspiration. As a Filipino American growing up in USA, I never really felt any connection with the Philippines. I was brought up by knowing only the stereotypes that sometimes make a Filipino American want to shy with embarrassment. Stereotypes are everywhere within any culture. By reading this book and flipping through the pages, I saw that Philippines is a beautiful place. Everyone needs take a look at this book. It's a great eye opener for Filipino Americans who have problems accepting their own skin.

I'm an Architectural Designer that lives/works in Jamaica and Bermuda and I'm also a fan of modern/contemporary architecture. I own a number of books on the subject, but few tend to address basic climatic issues that we in the Tropics face (and rightly so, since they are about projects north of the tropics). I've just received the book from my freight forwarder and had a chance to browse thru it. It really looks interesting and certainly provides inspiration for projects that can be successfully executed in our hot, humid climate.
The inclusion of architectural drawings (Plans, Sections, Elevations) is also welcome - too many books on Architecture neglect this very important point. I think this may be the telling factor for deciding whether this is to be another one of my coffee-table books, or a serious informative reference for ideas and inspiration. For now, I'm leaning to the latter.

I bought this book for myself. It's a true treasure trove of visual treats. Have you wanted to know how the homes of the rich and/or famous in the Philippines look? The variety of materials available for buidling and furnishing homes in the Philippines is astounding--rich woods, a wide spectrum of fabric, ethnic carvings and woven work. Linger over the detailed photographs in this book! Now I know what to get for my sisters and in-laws for Christmas!

What can I say is awesome and timely, finally truth. This book really opened my eyes to so much. I guess if I could single out one thing I would single out the part in the book when you were instructed to right down your struggles and you will see that people that struggle with homosexuality also have the same issues that people who do not struggle or rather participating solely in heterosexual sexual attraction. This was awesome to see how the devil will make one issue so huge and tie in other issues such as low self-esteem, no real good relationships with men, a bad self image, etc into homosexuality. What mainly blessed me was the truth of Apostle Youngblood. The coming out stage!!! It really is a process but we have to really stop hiding for the devil for real saints! JESUS nailed this sin to the cross and I don't know about you but I will be free because HE made me free! John 8:36 and that's it! Get the book and be blessed but most of all get the WORD in you in the BOOK!

This is the heart of God for me. I have been hiding in a large church for two years and a friend sent me word about this book. After reading it I know God was speaking to me. I would encourage everyone to read it. I have been in church since I was 3 and I am 22 now and I have never heard it like Bishop Duane wrote it and I pray God blesses him like he has blessed me. No more hiding for me. I have repented and know I am in a battle, but I expect to win. Get the Book.

I do not know how to fit all my thoughts about his book in this box but I must start by saying that I am thankful to God that he did not allow me to turn 25 without reading this book. I have spent 13 1/2 years messing with guys. After reading this book it is like Bishop Youngblood wrote it about me. I have been living with another man for 3 years and still going to church and until I heard this story I never really considered the life I was living. I went to church with a whole different attitude yesterday due to the book and rededicated my life to Christ. I encourage everyone struggling with homosexuality and trying to quiet that storm inside to read this book and be set free to become who you were born to be. I applaud Bishop Youngblood for being honest enough to admit his own errors. His honesty gives me hope and I know that God will use me too. Again, get this book and be blessed. Thank you Jesus and Thank you Bishop Youngblood

I sit in church every week listening to the preacher speak about everything in the world and when he finally mentions homosexuality and he speaks like it is some special poison and all homosexuals are going to hell. I am so glad that Bishop Youngblood wrote this book to help a young man like me understand the love of God and his expectations of me. I have accepted the truth that I am to be free and was not born to be gay. Through this book I have also accepted the fact that my associations have always been a problem. I thank God for this book it has blessed me and I encourage everyone to read it and pray for Bishop Youngblood

The best introduction to game theory ever written
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-07
Game theory is an area of mathematics that has a very short history; it began with the publication of the classic book, "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern in 1944. It is a very dynamic field, having applications ranging from parlor games to economic competition to potential warfare between nations. Straffin covers all of these areas in a manner accessible to anyone with a mathematical bent.
To me, the most interesting games are those that rely on the unpredictability of human behavior and there is nothing better to illustrate this than the prisoner's dilemma. Two criminals are captured and kept in separate rooms. If both keep silent, there is no evidence against them and they are released, but if one talks and the other doesn't the talker gets a reward and the silent one gets two years. If both confess, then each gets one year. In the standard model, the fear of being the fall guy causes both to confess, even though it is to their mutual advantage for both to keep silent. Straffin covers this situation in detail.
As some of the examples point out, free markets, where each participant pursues their self-interest are not always the most efficient way to allocate resources or make decisions. Cooperation between the participants where each gets something less than the potential optimal can be the superior way to make decisions. This occurs when the payoff is high when only a few can take advantage but is negative or low if all try to take advantage.
There is no area of mathematics that can match the fascinating consequences of game theory. It is about the complex interactions between humans, both individually and in groups. In my opinion, it is impossible to understand sociology if you lack understanding of basic game theory. This book is the best place to acquire that understanding.

This is a good first book about game theory for those who are not afraid of math but not mathematically inclined. The book is full of math but the simple explanations and the way the author builds up to the theory makes it simple to follow.

I read a couple of books on game theory. This is one of the better books... but it also has one small advantage... it's small. I carry it almost everywhere and read its short chapters (another advantage) without getting too tired. It's also quite difficult to get tired reading the book as the author keeps his explanations fairly simple, lively, and to the point.

A good spread of topics and examples too!

I planned to do a talk on the subject of the mathematics of a particular game, called Snood, and I had to learn Game Theory quickly to do so. This book explains things well, and the exercises, while easy enough to do in my head, still cement everything very well so that I can honestly say that I have a solid understanding of the subject even though I just picked up a single book.

Very good.

Four years into the Christian life (1958) I was given this book. How did I like it? Thus far, in July of 2008, I have bought and sold or given away over 1100 of them. There is nothing else like it. It permeates every aspect of life. Children, grands and greats learn how to live and raise children who do not rebel, having no law to rebel against. We evangelize using the principles of grace. We grow older with no stress, all thanks to what Chafer has written and what God has provided.

Grace: Chafer's Theological Thread
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-02
This book was a life-changing read for me. Chafer's exposition of grace displays probably the clearest exposition of a classic presentation of dispensationalism and its position on the difference between law and grace. It presents lines of discontinuity in the drastic way it is needed in today's church. Law is not Grace - Grace is not Law, to confuse the two is tragic. Beyond anything, Chafer makes sure we understand how foolish and dangerous it is to infuse and confuse law with grace and confuse the two. Luther clearly saw this great discontinuity in the bible between law/grace (more so than the Reformed churches), truly bringing freedom to the person dead in sin. This is not to imply that Luther was dispensational, clearly not so, its just that both sides see a clear contrast in the law/grace economies.

I could comment on all the distinctives Chafer applies from this system of discontinuity such as the Sermon on the Mount, the Sabbath, the Christian Life, etc. but I'll leave that to your reading. What is clear is that Chafer sees a drastic, drastic difference in these economies, sometimes I think a little too discontinuous. This is not to say Dr. Chafer is wrong, just that he seems to emphasize the differences to the extent that it misses the continuity between the dispensations and the progress of history and God's revelation. I think this is a bit problematic even though I am a dispensationalist and love Dr. Chafer's works very deeply. This has already been revised in expression and corrected in dispensational teaching (see Ryrie's 'Dispensationalism', Renald Shower's 'There Really is a Difference') for quite some time, but it is still important to know that it has been corrected.

I think its very important to understand this since Christians from other views (primarily Covenant teachings) have given solid, solid critiques of the 'classical' understandings of Dispensationalism (as taught by Scofield, Chafer, Brookes, A.C. Gaebelein, etc.) and Dispensationalists have listened (please see the great dissertation by Todd Mangum titled 'The Dispensational-Covenantal Rift, 1936-1944'). Poythress is a high suggestion, also Hoekema's 'The Bible and the Future', and Hans K. LaRondelle's 'The Israel of God in Prophecy'. Please steer clear of foolish and error filled critiques such as John Gerstner's book, 'Wrongly Dividing the Word of Truth' and many others. Though I am still a dispensationalist, these (former) works are important to help us to understand that both 'extremes' lead to an imbalanced perspective. When I say 'imbalanced' I mean that the Classic Disp. position tends to be almost dualistic in its thought of earthly/heavenly which is problematic and I do thank others for those kind of critiques. However, the other side (such a Covenant teachings, etc.) when very consistent upon emphasizing that everything is a spiritual shadow, type, etc. seems to err on the side of a metaphysical problem in the Christian faith. Clearly we don't want that either.

Also, one last slight critique; Chafer holds to a view of Christian filling of the Spirit that is an either/or on/off teaching. I think the view errs slightly because you are not filled with the Spirit simply by confessed sin and repentance in the life of the believer. I believe the filling of the Spirit has to do more with a walking of obedience than an instantaneous experience of spiritual filling/spiritual life. Though this is minor, it has been critiqued by others and I feel they are correct in their critiques of Chafer on these points.

However, with all that being said, Chafer's work should be read by every Christian because it is so clear and thorough on the teaching of grace as the thread through which the history/progress of revelation is seen. It truly brings the bible together for a Christian who has applied themselves to the study of the scriptures. It sheds so much light on the scriptural truths of justification, assurance, growth in grace (progressive sanctification), and our expectation of the return of Christ. Truly a monumental work by Dr. Chafer that is vital for the growth in grace of every Christian. Highly recommended.

This book reminded me of Einstein's "Theory of Relativity." It starts with a quick summary of simple absolutes about the concept of the grace of God, and then blows your mind with their implications.

After reading it, I wonder how those who think they are still under The Law, or those who think you can lose your salvation, define grace. I doubt they've thought through the implications of their beliefs or tried to reconcile them with the concept of grace, supposedly the foundation upon which God deals with us.

I can't recommend the book highly enough. For those unused to reading early 20th Century proper English, it's worth the investment of time and effort.

It is very helpful in validating the more 'minor' Meniere's symptoms your physician may not have explained to you as being due to this disease. It will also give you options that range from traditional to holistic treatments. Should you reach the surgical level, this book diagrams and explains the options, risks, and outcomes to result in an informed decision. I was on the fast-track to surgery, but after reading the book, I found the drug betahistine mentioned. I discussed this with my specialist, and he consented in giving it a try. While this drug therepy dosen't work for everyone, it gave me my life back. Might I have found this therapy in another book? Maybe...but I didn't.

If your investments are sluggish or you're a general interest library seeking a wide-ranging personal finance guide that won't age quickly, THE NET WORTH WORKOUT is for you. It tells how to build financial strength through a blend of diversity and cutting out the 'junk' investments which drag down a portfolio, and tells how to use existing financial options to strengthen a position. The focus allows for a powerful investment tool that embraces the ideas of the portfolio as a whole, analyzing its individual components and their contribution capacity.

Susan Feitelberg, the author, is a JPM Chase Financial Adviser. This book is product of seminars she has given to her clients to provide guidance on improving their financial situation and wealth. The book provides a logical, step-by-step approach to managing your finances in an organized fashion.

As a competitive athlete, who needs to be physically fit, she explains that individuals need to get financially fit to be able to maximize their wealth. She compares getting financially fit to an athlete getting ready for a competitive event. Preparation, practice and a game plan are necessary for both to achieve success.

According to Feitelberg, individuals need a plan to handle their finances today and going forward. She uses athletics as a metaphor to explain how goals, vision, persistence and success apply to individuals in developing their financial plans. She recommends that you become your own financial trainer.

The crux of the book is composed of separate chapters on the Four Quadrants of Wealth:
- Earning (equivalent to metabolism)
- Spending (caloric intake)
- Saving (strength training)
- Investing (cardio fitness)

The author also delves into the importance of having a positive attitude in order to reach your goals, and therefore suggests that an individual first prepare a net worth statement, decide on the short- and long-term goals, and revise them as necessary.

In the area of investing she recommends that a list of current investments be prepared with your investment goals for 1 and 3 years. She then covers compound interest, dollar cost averaging, tax reduction and retirement funding, diversification and tax deferral. In the savings area, the author reviews CDs, MMAs, 529 plans, retirement plans, and the importance of coordinating savings with other quadrants.

Overall, the book is an excellent primer on what is needed to have a sound financial future.

The United States Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is a required text for training all of our seasonal ocean lifeguards. As an Operations Lieutenant for the City of Newport Beach the book has been an invaluable reference with general information, concepts and specific procedural techniques. There are photographs that depict various aspects of modern lifesaving and example report forms. A lifeguard agency or public safety agency that engages in open water rescue is remiss in not having this book for their students and as a reference. Renowned lifeguard experts from around the United States contributed to this excellent book. The book could also have significant impact internationally if a beach had to start a lifguard agency where one does not exist today. If one wants to become a lifeguard, this is a must have text. I am glad that this book exists and am hoping for a new edition that will be even better. Buy it today, you can't go wrong.

The manual ocean lIfeguards have been waiting for.

Open Water Lifeguards now have a manual written by veteran lifeguards who have put a lifetime of experience into easily read text. Used in combination with local training plans and protocols the USLA manual provides the supplementary material necessary for the complete training and retraining of open water lifeguards..Chapters on professionalism, the aquatic environment, meteorological considerations, preventative lifeguarding and surveillance, emergency planning and management, lifeguard health and safety and many other related topics provide a depth of training keyed to the open water environment unavailable from any other resource. Appendices providing useful beach management forms, an extensive glossary, surf boat rowing techniques and a thorough index complete usefulness of this valuable reference.

Open water lifeguarding in the 21st century requires thorough preparatory training in techniques and procedures as well as mental and physical conditioning. This manual provides an excellent tool for establishing a training plan that will develop competent lifeguards in accordance with contemporary standards of care emergency management guidelines.

USLA Manual Used in Hawaii

The USLA Manual of Open Water Lifesaving edited by Chris Brewster is the basic textbook used in the training programs for the following agencies in the State of Hawaii: Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division, City and County of Honolulu, Aquatics Division, County of Maui, Water Safety Section, County of Kauai, and the Aquatics Division, County of Hawaii. These agencies are responsible for providing ocean lifeguard services for their respective counties (each Hawaiian Island is considered a county, with Maui County including Molokai and Lanai and Kauai County including the island of Niihau.) All of the mentioned agencies are certified by the USLA under the Agency Certification Program. The USLA Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is the only manual of its kind that addresses the ocean/open water environment and the skills and knowledge essential to become an open water lifeguard. The manual is the result of the collaboration of lifeguards from across the country and provides historical as well as up to date information on open water lifeguarding. Descriptions of environmental conditions that the beach lifeguard will encounter and methods of dealing with these conditions are included in the text, as well as excellent chapters on drowning, prevention, rescues and equipment, and emergency medical treatment. An appendix which includes sample forms used by lifeguard agencies is also a valuable resource for those who administer lifeguard services. The textbook is well written, clearly organized, and serves as the fundamental resource for our agencies in the Hawaiian Islands.
