"An invaluable book that everyone interested in education system of South Africa must read. Jordan highlights the fact that resistance against the notorious Bantu Education system did not begin during the 1976 Soweto Uprisings. In fact, the Uprising carried on a legacy that began in the early 1950s when a group of 8 teachers resigned from teaching under Bantu Education system. Jordan, was one of those teachers. A historical gem for all the new generation of educators in South Africa and beyond."

Dr. Schutte presents Race and Ethnic Relations in an open and fresh manner. He learned at a young age what it was to be a racist, growing up white in South Africa. Not only did he realize his mistake in taking for granted another human being early on but he took it further by learning to correct it, to understand it further, for one way to beat any demon is to learn and understand how it works.

You'll see race relations through the eyes and drawing of young children and in the thoughts and words of those who are racist.

This is a wonderful learning tool, to understand racism and Apartheid. I'd would strongly recommend this book to students, professors and anyone interested in learning how racists think and act. Apply what can be taught to promote racial harmony, no matter where you live, your age or color.

I'm surprised more people haven't reviewed this invaluable book. In Kruger National Park, you can drive quite a bit on your own; in fact, choosing where to go on the vast network of roads can be somewhat daunting.

Enter Nigel Dennis (the author), with practical advice on which areas are consistently productive, including what kind of game frequent the area and when that area is at its best. According to the bio, Nigel Dennis is a wildlife photographer who's worked in the park for years, so it's his job to know where to see the wildlife. In fact, when we got to Kruger we were surprised to see his photos being used in the National Park's game hides as aids to identifying different species. Clearly he's been successful in finding even the most obscure wildlife, and he's done a great job conveying his experience to those of us who don't get to live there.

An important partnership against apartheid

This is an absolutely first-rate book -- thoroughly-researched, gracefully written, and crucial for understanding how the war against apartheid was fought not only by South Africans at home and in exile but by a small, highly-committed group of Brits and Scandinavians. While the book's focus is on the untiring and often controversial work Canon John Collins did in raising funds through some clever and clandestine means to provide legal assistance for South Africans or to help with their families' needs, I found the most emotionally compelling part of this book to be the smaller, personal stories of the connections individual white Europeans and black South Africans made through years of correspondence with each other. There are some lovely, sad, and moving stories here. The long-term partnership between European and African, North and South, white and black is inspiring and a model of transformation for global justice today. I commend Denis Herbstein for this important, moving book.

This book is incredibly useful to any examination of the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony. Its examination of the Xhosa cattle killing is especially well done, and as a whole the book is readable, challenging, and useful for research.

NOW what is whiteness?

When change finally came to South Africa, it came fast. Whites are the focus of this fascinating study, because whether they fought for or against that change, whites find the carpet pulled out from under their old identities. Just like their black compatriots, they are redefining themselves. Melissa Steyn conveys much about the dynamics of personal and social change and describes some of the currents flowing in the new South Africa. The book is searching and objective, in keeping with its academic status, but it is accessible, with touches of humour.

Full of fun and amazing stories
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

This book consists of many short stories for the first half, and the other half is dedicated for Leo (the lion that they've raised at their park ranger's house).

Lots of fun and amazing stories of the wild visitors and temporarily adapted wild orphans while the author and her family lived in the park rangers houses in 10 years in south Africa.

The later half is about Leo - the cute and sweet lion. Some parts are heart aching but he'll eventually settle down fine in the comfortable environment.

The authors love of nature, love for her children, and great love and respect to the wild animals are beautifully written with lots of nice photograph inside.

One of my favorite books! I've read this book on the way to my safari trip in Africa.
