Filled with stunning full-color photography, Majestic Big Game: The Ultimate Tribute To North America's Greatest Game Animals compiles insightful and respectful essays by a variety of individual authors, about great game beasts, unforgettable personal experiences while on the hunt, respect for the power and grace of nature, and much more. The collaborative effort of the Editors of Voyageur Press, Majestic Big Game is a truly amazing showcase, and an excellent giftbook for ardent big game hunters. Also very highly recommended as companion titles from Voyageur Press are Majestic Whitetails (0896585409); Majestic Mule Deer (0896584135); and Majestic Elk (0896583848).

I recommend this book to all kinds of outdoors lovers--anyone who ever loved Jim Kjelgard when you were a kid. The stories in here are really cool and interesting and span the continent. The audience isn't limited to hunters, though I think they'd especially appreciate the book. I particularly recommend the opening story by Rex Beach and the story by Rick Bass. Good stuff! And the photos are amazing.

No better guide for the directionless college student

Teachers, do you have a student who just doesn't know what direction to take in life? Do they remind you of a boat adrift without a rudder? Carol Carter has written an excellent book aimed at that student. Majoring in the Rest of Your Life; Career Secrets for College Students, is outstanding in filling the need of providing a good overall sense of direction for the drifting college student.

Many of us have been there, or know others who have been there: entering college with no clue what to major in. Or picture this scenario: a recent college graduate who has no idea where he or she will get their first job. This book seeks to deal with the situation in which those students find themselves.

Carol Carter is Vice President and Publisher of Student Success and Career Development at Prentice Hall. She is particularly suited to writing this book, with unique personal qualifications based on her own experience and her work at Prentice Hall.

The book walks through interest and ability inventories to help students discern strengths and weaknesses. Tips on obtaining first jobs, networking, and handling rejection are interwoven with advice on internships, time management, and resumes.

Succinctly, we can't think of a better book for high school seniors and college students.

Great Book!

This is one of my all time favorite career/college planning books. Along with MAJOR IN SUCCESS it is informative, while also interesting reading. The author makes the student want to continue on with the book, and the "learning" process is almost effortless. An excellent resource for all underclass college students and college-bound high school seniors. Mary Becelia, Mary Washington College Office of Career Services, Fredericksburg VA

If you are looking for a how to book on woodcock and grouse hunting look elsewhere. Valdene spends a great deal of time painting a picture with very fine brush strokes. As you read you will smell the smells, feel the ground under foot and see the enviroment as it really is. This is not a book about hunting as much as it is a book about appreciating something. I have read it several times (it is an easy read) and I am sure I will read it again and again. There are technical aspects to the book. When you are finished you will know pretty much all there is to know about woodcock. From the singing grounds in March through migration in the late fall. You will definatly have an appreciation for this simple little bird.

I will not be as lengthy as the other review (to date) because it is outlined and described well. What I will add is that I have read many, many books about change (throughout career and in Masters program at BYU for Organizational Behavior) and this one is hands down the most practical and applicable to real life I have found. You will NOT go wrong buying this book, even at full price!

Your Own Yellow Brick Road Awaits

One of the many benefits of visiting Amazon.com's "Books" section is having the opportunity to check out Customer Reviews, many of which include suggestions for other sources. The Amazonians themselves include a sub-section which I consult daily and greatly appreciate: "Customers who bought this also bought..." I mention all this at the outset because I think it is a serious mistake (or at least silly) to characterize any one book on a given subject as THE book to buy. This is especially true of the subject of change agency. Without any effort, I can immediately think of at least 10-12 which are brilliantly developed, eloquently written, and of enduring value. I include this book among them. Does it ask most of the right questions? Yes. Are all of its answers definitive? No. The subtitle is precise and accurate: This book offers a thoughtful and cohesive guide to "developing high-performance people and organizations."

After an introductory chapter ("Becoming a Change Agent"), the authors organize their excellent material within three Parts: Beyond the Smoke and Mirrors; then Philosophy, Practice, and Responsibilities of a Change Agent; and finally, Integrating Resources, Roles, and Competencies. By the time I reached the end of this book, I realized that one of the greatest benefits to be derived from it is especially relevant to owners/CEOs of smaller companies. A majority of those I have worked closely with are the only change agent in their respective organizations. This book will help them to develop change agency competence among many of those whom they supervise. Of course, the book will also be of great value to senior-level executives in large organizations, including non-profits.

For me, one of the most entertaining as well as informative chapters in the book is Chapter 4 ("Beware of Flying Monkeys and Poison Poppies") in which the authors suggest correlations between the adventures encountered by Dorothy and her companions en route to the Emerald City and what all managers encounter in today's business world. "Flying monkeys are those unexpected characters, events, and situations that jump up and attack you at the most untimely moments.....Flying monkeys come in all shapes, sorts, and sizes. They can be people, events, activities, and attitudes....Perhaps the most important potential monkey for you to be aware of is the cultural flying monkey. [As the authors have explained earlier in the book], culture is defined as the underlying beliefs, values, and assumptions held by members of an organization and the practices and behaviors that exemplify and reinforce them. In other words, 'the way we do things around here.'" In Figure 4.1, detailed information about "Miscellaneous Flying Monkeys" is provided within an ingenious grid. With regard to "poison poppies", the authors suggest that so many change initiatives fail because managers are "seduced by the promise of a quick fix", a short-cut, etc. Time and again when retained by a corporate client to help solve problems, I find that the client's managers are preoccupied with the symptoms of problems rather than focused on determining the causes of those problems. Stated another way, many managers seem to think that wet highways cause rain.

The authors begin Chapter 11 with a quote from John Kotter ("A good rule of thumb in a major change effort is: Never underestimate the magnitude of the forces that reinforce complacency and that help maintain the status quo") and then use Figure 11.01 to illustrate what they call a "Holistic Model for Change Agent Excellence" featuring the brain, the heart, courage, and vision. All are necessary to overcome the aforementioned "forces." More specifically:

1. Provide strong, highly visible, and personal leadership

2. Institute employee involvement early and often, at all levels

3. Build a clearly articulated, shared vision

4. Provide frequent, consistent, and open communication

5. Leverage talented, and trusted employees as co-change agents

6. Set measurable operational and behavioral goals

7. Celebrate successes and re-address shortcomings

The authors carefully explain each of these "Seven Keys to Successful Organizational Change" in detail and then shift their attention to what they characterize as a "list of absolutes in the quest to develop gained wisdom": Tap into the wisdom of the "elders" in the organization, build a wisdom war chest", patiently and progressively wield your wisdom-based influence on an organizational level, and finally, share wisdom with others on an organizational level. The authors no only explain how; they also explain why.

Appropriately, the authors conclude their brilliant book as follows: "As in [italics] The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's vision was to somehow return to her beloved Kansas. By casting her eyes on that goal, she was able to energize and solicit support for friends and foes alike along her journey. In the end, she achieved her goal, as you will in your effort to [italics] becoming a change agent." Through their book, the authors can accompany you on your own journey. The Yellow Brick Road to high-performance people and organizations awaits. Let the journey begin!

This is our first "We Both Read" book. Believe me it is not to be the last. The first time my first grader and I sat down to read this book, we were hooked. We ended up reading it 3 times that night, and twice the next night. My Son and I had gotten used to either I would read to him or He would struggle to read to me. This way he can read his part with no problems thus increasing his confidence in his reading. I highly recommend them for beginning readers.

This book is a great easy reader. Actually, the whole series is fantastic, as it allows the parent to read to keep the story momentum going, while giving the very early reader manageable bits of mostly decodable text to read. I recommend all of these "We Read Together" titles.

When I first received this book I couldn't put it down. It is a complete, unbiased well laid-out analysis of modern inline muzzleloaders. I was particularly impressed with the ratings they provided on a variety of products. Extremely thorough, taking far more into consideration than just accuracy. I brought it over to our gun club so other blackpowder enthusiasts could enjoy it, and I literally have a list of people wanting to borrow this book. But I guarantee that you won't want to loan this beautiful hard cover book to anyone. This beautifully illustrated book is truely a piece of art suitable for the den or library.

I bought this book when I decided to go back to work after a couple of years at home with my kids. I was honestly a bit scared about selling myself and convincing an employer to take my skills seriously, but The Mom Economy gave me the tools I needed to prove my worth, which also gave me confidence. I started a new job recently, and so far, it's all manageable. Anyone who's going back to work should use this book - it will make you feel like you have support in the process.

Elizabeth Wilcox has managed to address almost every issue that faces a mother who needs or wants to work. After reading this book, I was able to come up with an unusual way to make my job fit with my family obligations, and my boss ended up being impressed with the way I handled the discussion. I could do it because the book gave useful tools and taught me how to be prepared. It is rare to find books that are actually practical and how-to in this area, so this one really stands out.

This was a goldmine of info on a small, private company that doesn't get a great deal of press. I've had a hard time getting good info on this company, so it was a relief to get a hold of this guide. I had a couple friends of friends who've worked at Monitor, and so i knew the rep was a good one. But since I couldn't get in touch with these friends of friends, the guide was the next best thing. Plus it's current, moreso than the insight from these FoFs who worked for Monitor several years ago. Thanks WetFeet. I'll be looking at your website some more to help me get my resume writing, interviewing and other skills up to speed.

Most descriptive book I've read on utilizing a deer
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-15
This book tells me a lot that I've never read anyplace else about how to butcher a deer by yourself. Sure, you'll find diagrams here and there that appear to be helpful, but when you're out in the cold garage late at night trying to correlate a poor sketch with where exactly to make the right cuts, you really should have Walrod's book close at hand. He makes a lot of sense, and he goes on to tell us about how to make soap from the fat (tallow), then on to fishing lures, home taxidermy, antler craft, pickled tongue (no kidding!), and best of all, how to cook venison so well that even ordinary citizens will love it.

Excellent utilization of a deer!

Review Date: 2003-11-05
This book shows everything a deer can be used for, including (no kidding) making soap from the deer's tallow. Also, fishing lures from the hair, knife handles from the antlers, also how to use a soup-can to press saugage paddies. Also, home-taxidermy, home tanning, and the best sketches and illustrations I've ever seen for doing your own butchering in the garage. Walrod makes it look easy...I tried his method, and it works!
