My 17 year old daughter read this book to me and we both really enjoyed it. Full of interesting details, the book was obviously written from the heart and is enlivened by a counterpoint between the energy of youth and the experience of a mentor. The reverence for nature and the "high country" comes across with feeling and catches you up not only with the beauty but also with the rigor and difficulties of experiencing nature and life itself.

I read this exquisite book in two sittings as I was torn between not wanting to put it down and wanting to stretch it out. It is beautifully written and weaves in significant details about ancient history, modern issues and spiritual understanding in the context of coming-of-age and appreciation of the wilderness all without sounding pedantic or preachy. It certainly deepened my understanding of hunting. It is the sort of book that would appeal to teenagers (the protagonist is a boy) and adults.

A teens' self discovery is portrayed in the backdrop of the beautiful Rocky Mountains while hunting. The story of Peter Atkins unfolds as he learns an alternative to the urban consumer-driven existence we call everyday life. In flashbacks and exciting present-tense mountain action we learn how one can step outside the mundane to experience a higher level of awareness and meaning.

A quick, thoroughly enjoyable read.... Be sure to pick up Wapiti Spirit and spend a few days winter camping in the Rockies learning lessons of quietness, ruggedness, freedom, independence and compassion. In Wapiti Spirit Michael Houston shows how allowing an animal to live a free, wild, life and be taken as quickly, humanely and unexpectedly as possible... providing pure meat... is much better than putting creatures through misery for the sake of cheap burgers... But that's just one of several neat themes in Wapiti Spirit...

Our book club, consisting of 12 mature readers (ages 50-82), found Wapiti Spirit an enjoyable, thought-provoking story which led to many lively discussions. The discussions included the importance of mentoring, remembrances of those who mentored us and how we have passed these lessons forward, respectful hunting practices and rituals, urban vs rural understanding of the food-chain, and wildlife management. We highly recommend this book to everyone especially kids who live in urban settings.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has been retrenched, made redundant, involuntarily exited from the workplace or simply disillusioned with his or her workplace. A step by step manual on how to transition or transform yourself and make a comeback. Full of tips and suggestions, if you are a career hunter, it would be useful to have this text handy. Its got some stories of individuals' experiences and therefore this should be helpful in enabling you to make a move, if you are hesitating.

I found this to be an excellent read - a real motivational book, especially for someone coming out of the .com craze. This book told of all the mood changes and feelings of anxiety that come from being downsized or from a company that has gone out of business. It also contained a good list of resources relating to where you were in your search for a new career.

Loved it. Recommend it to anyone on the edge.

Are You a Corporate Refugee? is an excellelnt resource for people who are being downsized, EAP professionals, and Outplacement experts. This book proves to be a guide for preparing for an imminent layoff and describing steps to take after the layoff. The author, Ruth Luban, does an excellent job in not only presenting a very practical guide, but addressing the full range of emotions attached to such a major life changing event.

As a career counselor, I am always searching for resources that are both informative about the psycholological impact of change and pragmatic enough to provide concrete guidance for persons navigating a career transition. This is the book I most often suggest to clients who have been laid off or are otherwise in the middle of a job change under challenging circumstances. I highly recommend this book.

On the brink of layoff, I found this book at the library among the usual collection of books on resume' building, interviewing and job search. Reading the first chapters about downsizing I could see that this book was about my story, starting with the "On The Brink" experience of knowing something drastic is about to happen soon. Turns out the book is about the internal challenges and transitions involved in loosing a job, dealing with "what to do next" and how to make the journy to the next job a rewarding one.

Now I have my own copy from Amazon which I use most every day. It is very helpful.

I am out on the job market after a 25 year career at GM. While I interviewed and hired employees, there is nothing quite the same as your own job interview. This book is a must for anyone wanting to brush up on their interviewing skills.

After re-writing my resume using the competency format, the interviews started pouring in! Good examples and guidelines. Have organized all my competencies and interviews are much easier.

Also recommend the full book on writing interviews.

All the other books I tried were nothing like the interviews I was actually having. Instead of having to memorize rote answers, this book helps you to understand what the interviewer is looking for and why. It is not only helping me prepare for interviews; it is helping me understand how I can improve my on-the-job skills so that I am even more appealing in the future for jobs or promotions.

This book is a must if you have a targeted selection or competency-based interview in the near future or if you are planning to change jobs in the near future. In fact, even if you don't plan on searching for a new job within a year, I still recommend this book due to the planning advice it gives.

This is by far the best all-in-one book for targeted selection or competency-based interviews. Ms. Kessler is an excellent author and she breaks down the process on how to prepare, how to perform during the interview, and how to follow up after the interview.

As a Columbia MBA student, I found Kessler's book really helpful. I've found interviewing at business school very difficult because I'm surrounded by amazingly well-qualified competition! Interviews are one of my weakest points and I've read a bunch of interview guides in the hopes of finding out what I'm doing wrong. Until this book, I found these guides kind of useless and a waste of money (e.g. the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews). But this book was great. It has changed the way I view interviews and has made interviews considerably less scary. While other books talk about what and what not to say, she focuses more on the approach to your answers. I found this more applicable and practical.

Instead of focusing on you, Kessler focuses on the interviewer. She gives the interviewer's perspective and examples of what the interviewer might have in front of him or her during the interview. This gave me a better idea of what interviewers are looking for and how I should structure my answers. Building answers around competencies has made my answers more strong and concise.

Kessler also has a section of interview examples and her critiques of the candidate's answers. I recognized a bunch of mistakes I made when I was interviewing for jobs after college. I wish I had this book back then! I'm sure it would have opened a lot more windows of opportunity (or at least ended the job search sooner).

These kinds of books tend to stress me out. Kessler's writing is clear and the pacing was just right for someone like me. It was easy to absorb the main points and see how I could apply them to myself. I still got a panic-y feel in my stomach, but much less than I usually get. The summary tables at the end of each chapter were great because they helped me make sure I got what I was supposed to get out of each chapter.

I highly recommend this book. It's helped me get a better idea of why I haven't received offers for jobs I know I was well qualified for. Now instead of just being frustrated about it, I have a way to deal with it!

The perfect job is never going to simply fall into one's lap. "Courting Your Career: Match Yourself with the Perfect Job" is a guide for the ambitious to find the job they so desire - and how to find out if that career they desire is truly right for them. Taking a satirical outlook which makes an analogy between finding the perfect job and finding the perfect mate, "Courting Your Career" blends equal parts of wisdom and laughter. Highly recommended for community library career collections and to anyone looking for their perfect job.

Job hunting is like dating: flirting with potential employers, making the best first impression you can, hoping to find a great match. This is the premise of Shawn Graham's book, "Courting Your Career: Match Yourself with the Perfect Job."

Shawn is associate director with the MBA career management center at UNC-Chapel Hill. He knows that job searching isn't always fun for students and young professionals, so he decided to use the dating metaphor to make the process more palatable. It works. Shawn's tone is friendly, knowledgeable and detailed, and the dating metaphor is clever (e.g., cover letters as pick-up lines).

My favorite part of the book is the sample scripts, where Shawn outlines exactly what to say in various situations, such as calling a networking contact or approaching a recruiter at a career fair. He also provides some tips I haven't seen elsewhere, such as a guide to the best places for men and women to buy interview suits (helpfully ranked by price).

Recommended for Gen Y job seekers looking for expert advice combined with a fun twist on the career search process.

My only regret with this book is that I got my hands on it merely weeks after I had already accepted a job! While I'm thrilled with my career choice, this guide could have saved me a lot of heart ache (no pun intended) during my job search. Shawn presents such an obvious and sensible idea that it's a wonder we all hadn't thought of it before. The text itself is an enjoyable read on top of being incredibly insightful- perfect for college students who are quite unwilling to read anything not absolutely necessary. Career changers could also benefit from the blatant honesty that Shawn's comparisons expose. Early in the book, Shawn relates "accepting any job that will pay the bills" to "settling for any date who has teeth." Yes, that made me laugh but also made me realize it's quite silly to settle for just any job if its going to require at least 40 to 50 hours of your week. Looking back, I also fell into the trap of "dating someone just because they lived down the street from me"...in other words, restricting my job search to one major city. In short, this is the first piece of career advice literature that I've enjoyed reading. Succinct and realistic, it is a must-have for anyone looking for their first job, a promotion or a career change.

As a recent MBA grad and an even more recent single guy, I found this book informative and entertaining on multiple fronts. I especially liked the author's philosophy on where to meet both networking contacts and potential mates - "everywhere but police stations and prisons." Funny, yes, but there's a sincere truth to that advice as well.

The word "networking" used to make me cringe, because I associated it with something artificial and forced. This book helped change the way I thought about networking - it made me realize that networking can be done anytime, anywhere. It doesn't have to be so different from what you do in other parts of your life. Who you know, and perhaps more importantly who knows you, is just as if not more important that what you know when it comes to opening doors.

In addition to its advice on networking, "Courting Your Career" provides a wealth of guidance regarding self-awareness, which is the foundation upon which any successful job search must be built. After all, if you don't know what you want it's very difficult to figure out how to pursue it.

I would recommend this book to those who are considering or are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs of any kind, as well as anyone who is contemplating a career change. Mr. Graham's personable, approachable writing style makes this an easy and enjoyable read.

This is the first job search book that makes sense! Shawn's approach takes the edge off and removes the intimidation associated with applying for a job. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a fresh and relatable approach to help them with the job search!

This book not only provides stories on real people who have escaped, it is a wealth of on-line information. It definitely inspired me to consider hanging up my corporate hat. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt that they didn't belong in the corporate world but were too afraid to try something different.

Pam's approach to escaping corporate America is realistic, direct, and is almost as if she's walking you through the process while standing right next to you and making sure you tackle every step without any obstacles. Her approach is extremely practical and doesn't even need to be read by the corporate worker; anyone looking for some sort of job change (or even a book for leisure reading) will get ideas and inspiration from Skillings's detailed writeup of how you can take charge of your career, find happiness, and pursue your dreams.

A well-written, well-researched book with great personal stories. Escaping corporate America is a hot topic, and this is a hot book. Read it. Enjoy it.

I thought the book was well written and well organized. I liked the 5-page quiz entitled "Are you a corporate casualty? The author has invested 12 years in corporate America. And then she bailed. She now operates her own consulting shop. She says she spent 3 years talking to 200+ people in order to research this book. And it shows. The book's content makes sense, sounds like it has been well researched, and provides value to anyone who is thinking of following the author's lead and "escaping."

Since I am a SCORE (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) counselor who helps members of this book's target audience on a daily basis, my favorite chapters were 8, 9, and 12. Those are the topics I usually discuss with my SCORE clients. But this book covers all the basic options available to someone who is tired of the rat race and wants something different. 5 stars!

Skillings' book addresses a dream that many have and that many have made come true: getting out of that cube and into the best job in the world. She presents the case for and the means of escape in a variety of ways: sound advice, case studies in success, gradual approaches to leaving the rat race, and resources for the legal, tax, and other factors that go into creating a business. Through it all, she maintains a bouncy optimism that could well be contagious. Various chapters deal with the problems of the corporate world, the attraction of 'solopreneur' life, and the steps needed to bring the vision to life. Others deal with "corporate jobs that don't suck," careers in the nonprofit world, teaching, and other ways to find satisfaction without the many (and possibly under-represented) problems of going it alone.

One thing stands out in many of these success stories. So many of them start with person X leaving a six-figure (or higher) paycheck that it starts to sound like a pre-requisite. In many cases, starting your own business will go through a lean year or two or more, so any savings you start with will help a lot. In others, the costs of equipment, materials, trade shows, sales trips, and a gaillion other things have to be up-front money, before you see your first nickel of revenue. So, what about the man or woman who starts with less, maybe lots less? Some of the advice here, like starting the new thing months or years before leaving the old, will help the startup starting with less. Still, this book might not be ideal for those who haven't already made a pile elsewhere. This book's other weakness lies in near-zero mention of the publicity campaign you'll need for selling yourself. There are endless opportunities there, including writing reviews at Amazon! (My current job came because of an Amazon review, and my brother has been invited to add to a forthcoming book based on one of his reviews - it can happen.)

Despite minor flaws, Skillings does a great job of motivating the reader to get on with her (or maybe his) dreams. She acknowledges that change can be scary, especially when it means a dramatic down-sizing of income, possibly to zero or less, during the startup phase. Well, fear isn't all bad. The right kind has amazing power to focus your attention, and one message comes through consistently: focus and dedication are two things needed to live the life you dream, and might be the only things needed.

I first read this book in 1979 and have been able to get job interviews for any job I wanted. I have shared this book with many people, who also got interviews or job offers. This is the only book that really shows how to market yourself.

A friend recommended this book when I was laid off twenty years ago. It helped me get the job I have today. In fact, there were 80 applicants and I got the job because my "inventory" was exactly what they wanted (as explained in the book). I had two copies of the book I kept circulating among my friends and it helped every one of them to some degree. A friend from college was disenchanted with her job at Arthur Anderson. She read the book, followed the advice and became the CFO of a $100M company!

Even though not marketed as such, I personally believe this book is really good for everyone, even those just entering the job market.

Actually I have used this book back in 1977 after I finished my MBA and I was new to this country. It helped me to write a resume which landed me two jobs. I have used Cover letter format resume too. This is fantastic book for any one and not just for executives. After reading this book can help you in selling your accomplishments during interviews.

The author explains many job search methods. He provides sample
broadcast letters and explains how candidates should
distinguish themselves. He spends a lot of time on how to
get interviews and conduct them successfully. The book is
a good investment for anyone planning a job change or
casually surveying the market. The key to a successful job
campaign is to distinguish your experience from the other
potential candidates.

Mr. Boll originally wrote this book in 1963, and revised it in 1980. It is my favorite guide for job searching. It is better than networking, better than any colored parachute book, or any professional job placement specialist. They all cost you fortunes, and this book is less than [$$$]!! Share it with friends, but make sure you get it back!!

This was a great book. Simple and straight forward. His writing style was quite engaging as well. I am new to grouse hunting and this book helped point me in the right direction in terms of where to hunt and how to hunt.

I have a library with every book I can get my hands on related to grouse hunting. There are resources specifically on Ruffed Grouse, guns, gunfit, shooting techniques, and every other aspect of the sport. The grouse hunting guides tend to get a read once or twice and then stay on the shelf. Not so with Walrod's book. It is the one hunting guide I have found myself referencing repeatedly. He has great comparative statistics and charts for locating birds depending on the conditions. It is a very enjoyable read and an excellent resource for the dedicated grouse hunter

From habitat and food to identification he tells it all. Having never hunted grouse before, I found it to have very good information. However I did not find it to be as humorous as a prior reader states. I actually found it to be a bit dry. All in all it is a keeper book to add to my library.

This book is loaded with information that will make you a better grouse hunter. The author truly understands this game bird and is able to take his insightful observations and perfectly convey them in this book. This book is sure to make you a better grouse hunter. The information on the grouse alone is worth the money and throw on top of that the information about guns, loads, dogs, and success rates of other hunters just makes this a must buy. I highly reccommend this book. I bought a few other books on grouse and this one is head and shoulders above the rest.

Being (apparently) the state advocate and completely tired of all the hunting books which cover only the eastern part of the United States, I found this guide to be a great book no matter where you live and hunt.

A great picture of a Ruffed Grouse taken from the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington state shows that the authors detail of habitat and other tidbits of hunting information apply in each and every covey around the country. What weapons to use. The appropriate ammo. The right choke. Statistics, opinions, and hard facts. Did I mention the book covers habitat? Oh! I can't forget to mention the recipes! Think of "Fried Grouse with (Wild) Mushrooms" and if that doesn't make your mouth water then check your pulse (or just read all the other recipes - there's some good ones).

If you have grouse near you, this book will help you find them and hunt them successfully - no matter where you hunt.

Hunting the King, by Peter Clenott, is set in modern Iraq after the US coalition forces overthrew Saddam Hussein's regime. The blurb on the book's cover is "The race to uncover the most prized archaeological find of all time: the tomb of Jesus Christ."

This is Dan Brown light. Fast action, fast paced, details are not in-depth, the story facts are woven in with the real facts for a seamless, believable, whole. It is a good, easy read with mystery, dreams, visitation from the past, and puzzles. It is believable enough for you to wonder how it happened (You need to read the book for the 'it'!). Clenott, like real archeology, does not provide all the answers. So in my few quiet times, I can ponder back on the story line and wonder about meanings and futures.

The tomb of Jesus, where his mortal form was last laid to rest only the vanish three days later. "Hunting the King" is a race between archaeologists to uncover what could be the biggest discovery in their history, the tomb of Jesus Christ. Set during the height of the Iraq War as the army still marches against Hussein, Molly O'Dwyer is on the verge of discovery, but must face against rivals, the military, and a Muslim cleric all with their own agendas but in Molly's way nonetheless. A captivating thriller from first page to last, "Hunting the King" is a top pick for fiction lovers and community library collections dedicated to them.

HUNTING THE KING is a fast-paced story of the search for the remains of Christ. And if not Christ's remains, at least those of his family members. Throughout the complex compilation of characters from academia, religion, the military and the past Iraqi regime, you wonder what will happen to the faithful if Christ's temporal remains should be found. The story is very well written. Clenott keeps the numerous characters and their stories clear and interesting and the dénouement is clever. I highly recommend this book.

One of the joys of reading 'first novels' is the pleasure of discovering a mature writer who is able to construct a book with a strong idea, a solid cast of varied and wholly credible characters, and the ability to pull it all together with elegant writing. Peter Clenott seems to have the qualities that define a writer of class - a rich imagination, a commitment to research, a facile way with words, a sense of the arc of a story line that is as smooth throughout the curve, and a style that manages to make a complex story very easy to follow.

Mysteries about the origins of Christianity have been a popular topic for the past decade or so - was Jesus crucified until dead and did he rise from the dead and in resurrection ascend into heaven, or was there more to his important life than tradition and the Church would have us believe - questions that to some casual reader of a book jacket may sound heretical but to others who love historical investigation open new paths of exploring, and even enhancing, our belief systems. Clenott writes with authority and yet with a profound respect for all religions as he traces a mixed group of archeologists, clerics, historians, politicians, Intelligence experts, and military personnel from varied countries in a search for the possible remains of a buried Jesus and his 'earthly family' - all from insights provided by the Book of Hannaniah (the daughter of Jesus and Mary Magdalen) excluded from the Bible. His cast is lead by a fascinating Dr. Molly O'Dwyer who is convinced through her sessions of 'Regression therapy' by a Catholic priest turned professor that she has inhabited the character of Hannaiah and is obsessed with discovering the burial site of Hannaiah and possibly even the grave of Jesus. The book follows the expedition team gathered from various countries to Iraq, a timely current and well-managed proscenium arch for the story. Clenott manages the various aspects of this story by breaking his chapters into fragments that serve to transport the reader to various vantages of the involved and very disparate characters, allowing the story to flow without disruption while at the same time giving the reader a depth of understanding about the forces involved. His knowledge and research is evident on every page as we learn the terrain not only of Afghanistan and Iraq but also of the Vatican and the US and tenets of the world religions. And to keep the novel grounded in credible reality Clenott manages to introduce sidebars of love interest and profound friendships as well as the brutalities of war and conflicts that enhance this story while successfully questioning historical Biblical accuracy.

To offer more of the plot would spoil the adventure for reading Peter Clenott's fascinating tale. HUNTING THE KING is a very fine, very successful work of literature - a book that, once started, is quite impossible to put down. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 08

One more book in the "just like Da Vinci Code" genre, but the only difference is, this one is good.

In 2003, as America is invading Iraq, a discovery is made that leads Molly O'Dwyer to believe that Hannaniah, the supposed daughter of Jesus, is there and Molly must find the remains before they are lost forever. Being an observant Catholic, she battles herself over the bigger picture. If she finds and reveals them to the world, what will happen to the Christian faith? With a long list of characters that had me a bit confused at times, Molly and her fellow scientist's race through Iraq and Afghanistan following clues that Hannaniah herself left in her poetry. Climaxing in a battle of good vs evil and who can outwit who, Clenot has you on the edge of your seat until the final pages.

The brutality of the time and place are not lost on the reader, Clenott manages to carry the reader through Abu Ghraib and into the beauty of the country that protects their traditions and will fight to withhold them.

What I respected Clenott for was his implying but not really coming out and saying who the mother of the child was. Mary Magdalene's name had been mentioned in the book as a follower, but it was never said outright that she was the mother of Hannaniah. I'm glad he didn't get caught up in the current hype and let the reader reach their own conclusion. The one thing that did caused me to mark the book down one star was the fact that the lead character was a diabetic, but yet was able to go long days without eating and only needing one insulin shot. I don't know why Clenott included this tidbit about his character since it really wasn't necessary and for me, drew me away from the story. Having lived with my father, a diabetic for years, this didn't make sense to me and kept drawing me away from the story.

Apparently, this is the first in a planned series and I look forward to see more from this writer and Molly O'Dwyer.

My hat is off to Joe Hutto. I have bought this as a Christmas gift for a turkey hunter, and I have no doubt he will enjoy it. But the story resonates to any animal lover or parent for that matter who has watched children come into their own. Joe writes in a style that is comfortable for the outdoorsman and yet tugs at something inside us that back porch naturalists can respond to. Thank you Joe, for sharing.

I loved this book about Mr Hutto spending a season with wild turkeys and befriending them. I read an earlier version of this paperback the year before last and I loved and absolutely enjoyed it. There should be more kindhearted animal loving people in the world like Mr. Hutto. I also loved the illustrations in this book. They are phenomenal. I loved the story and the photographs. Well written. If you love a book about wild animals, or animals period, this book is for you. Not only is this man a great writer but also a great photographer and illustrator/artist as well. A MUST READ.

Although I could not afford to purchase this book, I was delighted to get a copy from my library. I love the animal/human relationship, esp. when taken to its magical realm; the doors that open when entrusted by an animal. The sketches are sweet, simple and relay so much feeling; they are art. For a human to reach for this level of relationship is remarkable and to have it returned by animals is magical. Esp. the last par.: "...by some language that we both understand but cannot speak, and I could say: 'I know you, old friend. I recognize you by your iridescence, your incandescence, your illumination - I recognize you by your loneliness-you must be my brother.'" This book is a sort of recollection of who we are - our purpose. I love the double meaning of illuminated.

I believe this book is now out of print and I cannot imagine why. I have been a reader of nature oriented literature all of my life and feel that this is among the top 10 or 15. Extremely moving account of a biologists relationship with a group of wild turkeys raised and imprinted by the author. Read this!!

This is an incredibly beautifully written book. I never thought I would find it so interesting and spellbinding. I was doubtful when first beginning the book that the author would be able to maintain his observer status, but he did so remarkably well, raising the turkeys to be real wild turkeys. As I read the final line in the book, I felt I was closing a chapter in my life in which I had personally been involved with the turkeys and the author. I was impressed with Mr. Hutto's dedication to these remarkable birds, his keen observations, and also with his obvious "connection" to them. I hope he will write again in the future.
