The book is much more than a gallery of cover letters, although it is that as well. The first quarter of the book takes you through building your own cover letter from scratch and assists you in tailoring it to specific ads/conditions (i.e. pre-interview/no interview etc). This alone was quite useful. The remainder of the book is a huge omnibus of every imaginable type of cover letter, broken down by industry and also format. There are at least 8 to 10 cover letters per industry/type of job and each is written in a different format and by persons of differing circumstances. It will definitely get your creative juices flowing and assist you in crafting a perfect cover letter for the job you want. I almost forgot, there is a section containing eye catching resumes as well.

I have written three to four cover letters using the tips from the book, and also some of the examples for inspiration (I'll let you know how it goes :) ). This is definitely top notch and does precisely as advertised. In conjunction with the books "Killer Cover Letters&Resumes" and "15-minute cover letter", you will have all you need to create amazing cover letters.

Translated from German, this is an enormous book, with two oversized volumes in a slipcase. Not only is it gorgeously illustrated throughout with unusual photographs, the text is great too, starting with an excellent (but sophisticated) short history of hunting from prehistory to the present. The emphasis is on hunting around the world, which makes this book stand out from most, which are usually focused on the United States. It is fascinating to see how hunting traditions vary across cultures, but share the common themes of respect for the game hunted and calling upon the hunter to face up to the challenges of the pursuit in that spirit of respect. I am both a hunter and book publisher, and I can vouch for this as one of the best-written and most beautiful books you can find on this subject, at any price.

This book tells you how to get job interviews even when you have been turned down by a personnel department. While being good at what you do is important, in today's job market it is not enough. You have to know how to promote and sell yourself. You can't be hired unless you're interviewed and you won't be interviewed unless you convince the potential employer you're worth meeting, and you can't do that unless you know how to effectively market yourself. And that's what this book shows you in great detail, complete with examples, exercises, tests, and strategies galore. It helped me get my foot in the door.

One of the best Buffalo Hunting books, worth owning
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-03
With accounts taken from various previously published sources this book has got to be one of the best books on the old time Buffalo Hunters and how they lived/worked. First written in the Teens, Twenties and Thirties(one is a diary first written up in the 1870's) these stories were either written by the now old men themselves or related to others. Some are very well written, others not so well.
When you get yourself a copy of this book you'll get details on how these men lived and hunted, how many buffalo they killed, how they went about skinning the hides and selling them. Just about everything will be found in these pages.
Dixie Gunworks sells it in paperback form if you're on a budget, I wish Amazon had that version because the book really is a good one.

A rare set of first-hand accounts of the buffalo hunters

During the 1870's and 1880's, a great many men tried their hand at hunting buffalo. A man could make a great deal of money hunting for hides, but it was also arduous, lonely, and dangerous work. Many men, having tried it, went on to other things. As a group, these men were courageous and confident, but not particularly literate. First hand accounts of this part of American history are few. The best known is probably "The Life of Billy Dixon" written by his wife toward the end of his life. While excellent, it provides only one view. Miles Gilbert's "Getting a Stand" is a treasure of first-hand accounts written by other buffalo hunters. Gilbert painstakingly gathered them from countless sources and brought them all together between two covers. They vary in length and in quality of writing, as you would expect. Some are funny, some are hair-raising, but all are well worth reading. This is a book that the historical enthusiast who is interested in buffalo hunters and hunting will read over and over again. I highly recommend this book for its flavor and authenticity.

Chock full of examples and tips in the lost art of resume writing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-13
I've owned an early edition of this book since 1995 and found it to be not only useful, but essential. It is not uncommon for me to get comments on the format of my resume like, "this is one of the best resumes I ever seen." (Again, I am referring to format.) I've done some hiring and I would estimate that 8 or 9 out of 10 resumes I get from HR (which are already screened) are poor (or worse). For the saavy applicant, your competition is weak, so get going and get this book!

Pro:
-Many, many examples of good resumes for different fields
-Many tips for cover letters (e.g. a cover letter is NOT optional)
-Many recommendations for the interviewing process
-Fairly to the point, does not drag on and on
-You can't beat this price. Even if you find only one good tip, it would be worth it! (Trust me, it's worth it.)

Con:
-Book is not as "crisp" or "polished" as some texts (but it doesn't really affect content in my view)
-Examples are basic "idea generators" so you'll need to spend some time thinking (although in a sense this is a positive, resume will be yours/well thought out)

Bottom line: Highly recommended for the beginner (in my experience that's most of us).

This book covers it all in an easy to read and entertaining format. A lot of preparation should go into a guided hunt and this book answers the questions most hunters have about finding an outfitter, how to communicate with your guide, what to bring, what not to bring, and how to put together a budget. It even tackles the sticky subject of tipping. Don't be disappointed -- read this book before spending your hard earned money on the hunt of a lifetime. It really is an inexpensive insurance policy.

Early this year I decided that I was to take a outfitted hunt and wanted to do it right. Lo and Behold, Leonard Russell's,",Getting The Most From A Guided Hunt", appears on the internet. It was by far the most compact and complete reference book on doing a hunt right.I used this to review my list of outfitters, what to take with me, etc.. Don't let the low number of pages fool you, everything you need is in this book.

Whoever wrote the Goldman guide for y'all did a fantastic job. The writing is smooth, the reasoning is strong, and it's clear the author did his research--a good thing for me as it made my task of researching the company much easier. I went into the recruiting sessions with both guns firing, with the ammo furnished compliments of WetFeet. I felt good about my chances at snagging an internship with Goldman, but I felt like I got a leg up on the competition, having read through your guide. Thanks much!

Thank you so much for giving me a preview edition of your new book. What an invaluable asset this will be to anyone struggling through the house hunting/ house building process.

You have coordinated all the services the consumer needs, giving order and structure to an often daunting task.

As a Realtor in Columbia County, where people are often looking for a comfortable second home in territory unfamiliar to them, I, personally, will be better able to serve the public with my new Real Estate "Bible" in hand.

Thanks again. With my best wishes and congratulations,

"Good House Hunting" - A great help to me and my customers!

Review Date: 2005-06-10
I've come to realize over the 12 years of selling real estate what an emotional experience looking for one's dream home is, even for those who own several homes. For many people, it makes a statement to family and friends about who they are. Some people get so caught up in the fantasy of finding the "perfect home" that they never buy anything. This is especially true in a rural area where the inventory is limited, lacking charm and "soul" and where most of what gets sold ends up going through extensive renovations.

"Good House Hunting" is a methodical guide to identifying housing traits and property features which, once renovated, will allow you to end up in your "dream home". Dennis Wedlick has given you the map to follow to get you to that place. Through customers' reflections of how they live and what specific features are important to them, Dennis works to help them realize their dream home embodying spirit, soul and sentiment.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It will be a great help to me and to my customers!

Redesign to a organization network, customer centric, front line and back line jobs.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-25
Transforming your company into a network organization is an arduous, confusing, and chaotic process. The network organization will be the key to sustaining your competitive edge in the race to dominate the new growth segments in all industries. These times demand revolutionary change, not simple evolution.

The goal of the organization when creating the front line is to bring together the smallest number of people to solve most customer problems with little or no back-line intervention. These people must be relational, service-oriented, and like dealing with people; they have natural interest and experience in the arena of the customer interests; enjoy creative problem solving; they are action oriented and experiential by nature; they are looking for long term employment and want to be rewarded for the increasing relationship they build with ongoing customers over time; they must have excellent communication skills; and they must like the responsibility of making decisions and learning from their mistakes.

The back-line employees must focus on specialized areas of expertise or products rather than on one segment of customers. People, who work best as generalist have in-depth expertise in one functional area; they will be more logical; they will be more loyal to their profession and more technical then people oriented; they will move in and out of project teams with other specialist to solve problems and then move onto new projects and clients; they will compete with outside specialist as a benchmark of efficiency and effectiveness or risk being outsource; and they will focus on continuing education to keep their very specialized skills from becoming obsolete.

Employees want more say, in what is really going on, in the company. Employees see things too be improved, changed, or streamlined in their department expecting increased customer satisfaction. Employees want improvement but not the responsibility of becoming accountable. The truth is that in many traditional companies, neither the executive nor the employees want real change. The majority prefer the status quo because it is more familiar and less risky. As a result growth companies can't find enough good people to work in their fast-paced, demanding environment and most employees are unwilling to learn new skills and new ways of working.

Real structural change can be accomplished broadly and urgently in an organization only during a period of real crisis, bordering on business failure. Urgency works to eliminate the natural human resistance to change. If your company is not in a crisis state the pilot approach is recommended. The pilot approach introduces change into a small group in the company, a project team or division. Involve your best and most progressive customers, the ones that demand a high level of service and response from your company. Work out the difficult bugs and chaotic experimentation with this prototype group. Nurture the groups process give them visibility and tangible rewards and recognition for taking the risk.

Network organizations can benefit from the economies of scale of large commodity production systems and specialization in expertise, while paying attention to the individual and changing needs of their customers. Such a model begins with a clear understanding of the customer needs and the areas where the company can sustain a competitive advantage over other companies in meeting their needs. The secret of change is to start with the customer and redesign your company from the bottom up, the way your customers and frontline employees would.

What does you company do better than anyone else for a certain segment of customers? How can you create small teams comprised of individuals who have the cross-functional skills to meet the needs of each group of customers? How can you transfer as much decision-making responsibility as possible to the front-lines, where the customers are, and not to the backlines or to central management? How do you make every individual or team as accountable as a small business?

Highly Recommended!

This book is a fantastic way to get that extra "edge" and prepare yourself for a changing job market.

Two sections are particularly outstanding reading:

"Four Principles Driving the Work Revolution" should be in the hands of every job-seeker, hirer, and manager in business.

"Leveraging the New Entrepreneurial Climate" is worth the price of the book alone as an investment in anyone's future! It includes these terrific chapters:

...."For the Heroic: Strategies for Creating a Breakthrough Start-Up"

...."For the Creative: Become an 'Intrapreneur' Within Your Company"

...."For the Homebody: Turn Your Job or Function into a Subcontract Business"
